SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The South Park neighborhood has a new ornament for the holiday season, which residents hope will become a permanent addition.The South Park Business Group recently installed a new sign of the community's name on top of a building at the end of Fern Street."It gives people a little more of a talking point," says Tanya McAnear, who owns Bad Madge and Company nearby. "Having a branded neighborhood helps when you're on social media."The sign is part of this year's Holiday Walkabout Luminaria event on December 7. But people in the neighborhood hope the business group keeps it up as a permanent addition."I'd like to see it stay for a long time," says Wayne Prunkard, who has lived in South Park for 20 years. "It gives an atmosphere to the neighborhood, and I really like it."People in South Park have been clamoring for a sign like this for years, one that can help identify the area in the same way signs in University Heights, Normal Park, North Park, Hillcrest, Kensington, Barrio Logan, and Gaslamp do.The South Park Business Group paid for the sign. Organizers say they're looking into a way to make it permanent."It makes you stand out. It makes you unique," says Grace Gerber, the manager of Native Poppy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The unofficial start of summer is here in San Diego and that means it’s time to hit the beaches and enjoy some sunshine.Health officials are reminding residents that it’s also time to check the water quality before heading out.The County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health checks the water on a regular basis and posts that information online.Due to the need to warn residents if water quality is poor, the county developed the “Check Before You Get In” website.The site allows people to check water conditions at more than 80 local beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pandemic, protests, riots, there's a lot of stressors out there, but Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel has a few ways to find positivity."We have to go through those motions to be effective and to make sure that we can therefore get to a place where we can actually feel positive," Dr. Carcel said.She said cut out negativity, from social media to people you know, "there are so many things that we can feel terrible about right now and that's something we have to honor and we can also find that one moment in the day where we stopped and smelled the flowers."She said focus on the positives, find three things each day you are grateful for. Doing this each day trains your brain to look for the positives. She also said exercise and advocacy are two great ways to change your perspective."Advocacy, you know helping out, doing volunteer work. If you really feel passionate about what's going on right now you can advocate, you have a voice and your voice matters," Carcel said writing leaders is very important right now.Voices were raised across the U.S. at peaceful protests, creating positive change, interactions and dialogue this week after the tragic death of George Floyd."I'm really going to recommend if you have a friend or somebody of a different ethnicity or culture, engage in a productive conversation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department says pedestrian fatalities are going up in California - so they're cracking down on drivers, pedestrians and those violating laws that pertain to motorized scooters. All of this, just as new reports show a flood of scooter-related injuries backing up local emergency rooms. Wednesday night SDPD sent out targeted patrols to downtown and Lincoln Park. Two spots where pedestrian and bike collisions have increased in the last three years. In many cases, traffic violations led to those crashes. 10News watched as officers ticketed more than 50 people, and gave out more than 20 warnings.
