SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres are returning to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years after beating the Seattle Mariners 7-4 with a three-run rally in the 11th inning that included a go-ahead double by newcomer Mitch Moreland. The clincher came in the finale of a series that was moved from Seattle because of poor air quality due to wildfires, so the Mariners were considered the home team and batted last. After closer Trevor Rosenthal, another newcomer, struck out Phillip Ervin for the final out, the Padres had a brief but joyous celebration in the infield. 583
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Navy dismissed charges Thursday against an officer who had been accused of not reporting war crimes by a Navy SEAL later acquitted of murder in a high-profile case that got the president's attention. The action by the chief of naval operations in the case of Lt. Jacob Portier is the latest blow to military prosecutors and comes a month after a military jury cleared Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of murder and attempted murder charges.Adm. John Richardson also ordered an investigation into the performance of the Navy's justice system.Portier faced charges of dereliction of duty, destruction of evidence and holding Gallagher's re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse of a teen Islamic State militant the decorated SEAL was accused of stabbing to death after treating the boy's wounds.Gallagher was convicted of a single charge of posing for photos with the 17-year-old militant's corpse. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty of four months but will serve no jail time because it is less than his pre-trial confinement. The move by the admiral comes a day after President Donald Trump ordered the secretary of the Navy on Wednesday to strip prosecutors of medals they were awarded for their handling of the case despite the fact Gallagher was acquitted on the most serious charges.A prosecutor who had been removed from the case before trial — and not given a medal — was admonished for taking part in an effort that used software to track emails sent to the defense team that a judge said violated Gallagher's constitutional rights. The email tracking was meant to ferret out the source of leaks to the news media that plagued the case but the Navy said it never found the leak. 1726
SAN DIEGO - (KGTV) A San Diego biotech company is doing research that could lead to a vaccine against the coronavirus.Todd Nelson is the CEO of SGI-DNA in Sorrento Valley. His company invented the first automated gene printer. "We use that system actually to print genes. Genes are made of little building blocks that you've heard of, and we use that to rapidly, and in an automated fashion, print genes that researchers can use around the world for vaccine development. "RELATED: Miramar coronavirus evacuees start petition for quarantine oversightThe printer is called the BIO XP 3200. Roughly, 200 are in use around the world. "We're basically taking an entire laboratory of researchers that are doing various things, and we put it in a box," said Nelson.Researchers are using the printer to write the genes of the coronavirus."Even a nasty little thing like the coronavirus has its own genes, and there are certain genes that make that amenable to being a vaccine, and we know what those are so we put the information into the system, and we push a button and about 8 hours later that potential gene comes out ," said Nelson. "We're partnering with pharmaceutical firms to develop that in a very, very rapid fashion in the next 7 to 10 days to develop a vaccine," said Nelson. The company used the same technology to help develop a vaccine for the Bird Flu in 2013. Dan Gibson is the company's chief technology officer and the inventor of the technology used in the gene printer.RELATED: First case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego"That's really the power of synthetic DNA technology. You can keep up with the virus and write and build many vaccines to fight it and ultimately find a universal solution that puts an end to the coronavirus outbreak." 1900
