SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two separate clinical trials for phase three COVID-19 vaccines will resume in San Diego next week after AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson paused their students to find out why some participants became ill.“Pauses like this are absolutely common in large phase three trials so people should not be alarmed,” said Dr. Susan Little, the trial director for both studies that UC San Diego is set to take part in. “Studies will only resume when they are deemed safe for the study participants.”Little said not only are pauses like this common, but they also prove that the safety review process is working as it should.“Part of the reason we want people to understand that these are common is they will probably occur again, AstraZeneca with 30,000 people, Johnson & Johnson 60,000 people. It would be surprising if we don’t have another pause,” she explained.Little said once a trial is paused, it is immediately investigated by the independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB). The board reviews the issues and determines if they are related to the trial.“In this case, the event and all other safety events were reviewed and deemed not related,” she said. The AstraZeneca study is scheduled to start on Monday, and UCSD will be using a mobile vaccine clinic that will travel from Chula Vista, La Mesa, and Imperial Beach. The Johnson & Johnson study is scheduled for Tuesday in National City, where trailers have been set up as a clinic at El Toyon Park.“We are signing people up right now to have scheduled visits next week,” said Little. “Safety will always remain the number one priority for study participants.”Those interested in participating in the study can sign up here.Participants must be 18 years or older and in generally good health. People with underlying health conditions like heart disease or lung disease may participate.“They just need to be relatively stable with their conditions,” said Little. 1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Tracking citizen complaints about law enforcement is a requirement of California law. However, some say there needs to be a significant improvement in that process."Police officers have tremendous authority," said former police officer and criminal justice professor Kevin LaChapelle. He broke down how the process works."[In] a formal complaint, there should be written documentation and the agency is accountable for reporting that to the Department of Justice," LaChapelle said. LaChapelle says the formal complaint process differs from an informal complaint, where someone may talk to an officer or supervisor but no documentation is required. Those interactions are not included in DOJ numbers. When it comes to two of the largest departments in the county, Team 10 found the number of complaints differ drastically. In 2018, the San Diego Sheriff's Department reported nine complaints. In 2017, there were six reported complaints.San Diego Police Department reported 74 complaints last year. In 2017, there were 97 reported to the DOJ.Each department reports to the state both substantiated and unsubstantiated complaints. 1156

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. RELATED: Juniper & Ivy ranked among best restaurants in the US for a night outIn the future, Uber Elevate plans to enable the drones to land atop parked vehicles within its rides network near delivery locations before the food is picked up and hand-delivered. The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald’s, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy. “We’ve been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we’re meeting requirements and prioritizing safety,” said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate. “From there, our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button. We believe that Uber is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge as we’re able to leverage the Uber Eats network of restaurant partners and delivery partners as well as the aviation experience and technology of Uber Elevate.” 1571
