SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was killed after being hit by a car on Highway 15 near City Heights Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened in a northbound lane of the 15 near El Cajon Boulevard around 5 a.m. A sig alert was issued shortly after as CHP responded to the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego ER Nurse known as the "dancing nurse" returned home Saturday after working nearly a month straight in a Texas hospital.That was her second stint during the pandemic. She went to New York for six weeks from April to May to help out there.While in New York she danced to bring joy to her patients and that's how she got her nickname, the "dancing nurse.""They kinda just see me dance and they’re like wait a minute I know you!" Registered Nurse Ana Wilkinson said she is recognized sometimes at home in San Diego.When asked what it is like being known as the "dancing nurse," she replied, "They [my patients] probably think I’m weird right off the bat but it’s a good conversation from there on and I think it actually eases them because they’re so nervous and so scared."With nearly 300,000 Americans losing their lives due to the coronavirus, it's understandable why they're scared.Right now, cases and hospitalizations are sky high.When asked if Wilkinson keeps count of how many patients she's lost, she said, "I do not, I mean it wouldn’t. I prefer keeping count of people I save, I mean people we all save it’s not just me."Wilkinson said she remembers days they've lost as many as 10 people in one day on the floor. Some of her patients stay with her after they've passed. "My 23-year-olds, my 25, I say mine because I felt like they were my kids that I tried everything I could to save them. And to a lady who was 32-years-old who died from COVID. That’s what I try to tell people, COVID does not discriminate, age, race, color, anything. It just picks you."She squeezed their hands in reassurance. Sometimes she's the last smile they see.Now that a vaccine is coming, she's excited to have a weapon in the war."We just need everyone on board to do this, you can’t just one person, just maybe? It’s going to be yes. This is how we’re going to do it. We’re all going to get vaccinated. We all are going to stop this war," she said.A war that kept her from seeing her 7-year-old son Declan lose his first and second tooth.A war that kept her on the opposite coast for birthdays, Easter and Mother's Day.A war she's continuing to fight when she returns to work at UCSD Medical Center on Monday."We are definitely warriors and we'd do it again, and we'd do it again and we'd do it again because we love it. We love helping others. We love helping people and that's why we do this because we want to make a difference in the world," Wilkinson said.She said working in a rural Texas hospital was very different from her time in New York. In the month she was working 10+ hour shifts, she only had three days off.She said we've learned a lot about how to treat coronavirus patients since the beginning of the pandemic."I was in Midland and Odessa. We were a very small town but we saw everything," she said she learned even more critical thinking skills.The most stressful part of her work was how packed the hospital became, saying patients were sent from nearby hospitals that were at capacity.When asked if she regrets going to New York and Texas and if she would do it again, Wilkinson said, "I would do it in a heartbeat 100% I love these medical missions I call them, because yes we see a lot of things. Yes it’s emotional and some of us have PTSD because we do see a lot. But we do it because we love it. We love helping others, we love making a difference as much as we can." 3421
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat and power boat collided near the Coronado Bridge Sunday afternoon, injuring four people, according to San Diego Harbor Police.A good Samaritan drove by and noticed people floating in life jackets as their boat took on water. He picked up nine people and ferried them to Pepper Park. "It's just what you do you're a boater, it's what you're supposed to do, you help out on the water, people have helped us and we've helped other people," Kary Brownlee said.The damaged powerboat, a Bayliner, was towed back to the Pepper Park launch ramp where four passengers were evaluated for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital.The sailboat cruised back to Coronado on its own power."All it takes is a split second, when the captain is not paying attention that could cause a collision," boat safety advocate Amos Zolna said. He explained sail boats generally have the right of way, as they are harder to maneuver, compared to a power boat. Zolna said it's hard to navigate near the bridge, due to the large pillars that create blind spots.Harbor Police reported the 911 call at 1:28 p.m. They are investigating the cause of the crash and if any alcohol was involved. 1204
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report out Wednesday shows that San Diegans are keeping some vehicles for more than 15 years. The report, published by iSeeCars, lists the Toyota Tundra as the vehicle most likely to be kept by drivers for 15 years or more in San Diego. According to the report, more than 32 percent of San Diegans who own a Tundra keep it for that length of time. RELATED: More San Diegans keeping their cars for 15 years or longerOther vehicles that made the top five in America’s Finest City include the Honda CR-V, Honda Accord, Toyota Sienna and Honda Civic. Nationally, the Toyota Highlander was ranked the most likely vehicle for owners to keep for 15 years or longer. “SUVs are the vehicles most represented on this list with seven, but the longest-kept vehicles do include a mix of additional vehicle types including pickup trucks, sedans, a minivan, and even a hybrid,” said SeeCars CEO Phong Ly.According to iSeeCars, the Toyota Highlander also topped 2019’s list nationally. 1004
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new plan is calling for more than 170,000 new homes across the San Diego region over the next decade.The San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs 171,685 housing units by 2029 to meet demand. On Friday, its board approved a plan that divvied up those units across the region's 18 cities and unincorporated county based on a formula of job growth and access to transit. "We are in the midst of a housing crisis. It's time to act. Doing things the same way is not going to give us a different result," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The debate at the SANDAG meeting lasted about four hours, with some of the county's smaller cities saying the plan gave them an undue burden they could not meet. "It is impossible," said National City councilman Ron Morrison, who is not on the board. "Our urban reserve is the weeds behind the backstop in the little field. There is no place to build."National City's mayor Alejandra Sotello-Solis supported the proposal. Most of the homes, 107,901, will go in the City of San Diego. Chula Vista will be responsible for 11,105; Imperial Beach will add 1,375; Coronado 1,001, and Del Mar 163. Del Mar Deputy Mayor Ellie Haviland voted in favor of the plan, though she said she didn't know where those 163 homes could go. "If we are pushing housing away from transit and away from jobs, then that is not going to work with the regional transportation plan we are trying to build," she said. Del Mar Councilwoman Terry Gaasterland, who opposes the plan but did not have a vote, noted Del Mar added 20 housing units in the past 10 years. The board initially voted down the proposal, but Faulconer then called for a weighted vote based on population - getting the necessary votes to pass.Coronado, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, Poway, Escondido, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, El Cajon. The county representatives split their vote. The plan now goes to the state's Housing and Community Development Department for review. 1999
