BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday stressed the growing of autumn and winter crops at an executive meeting of the State Council.     The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council would continue to strengthen the fundamental status of agriculture and boost the support for agriculture and grain output, according to the meeting.     All provincial areas and departments should put into practice the central government's policies, especially policies for the benefits of farmers, according to the meeting.     Despite uncommon droughts and the global economic recession, China was expected to have a big harvest this year, underpinning the country's stable and fast economic growth, according to the meeting.     Although China reported grain output increase for continuous years, the relationship between grain demand and supply would be strained in the long run as China's infrastructure for grain output was not stable, the grain planting efficiency was relatively low and natural disasters were frequent, according to the meeting.     Autumn and winter planting was key to next summer's harvest and even next year's harvest and measures should be taken to promote grain output, according to the meeting.     The measures should include promoting subsidy policies and stabilizing autumn and winter planting acreage, stabilizing market prices to protect farmers' interests and promoting technology services for farmers, according to the meeting.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Car sales of major car-selling companies in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality increased by 71.7 percent year on year.     The selling boom in the home appliance and car sectors was partly stimulated by a policy approved by the State Council in June this year, aiming to spur domestic consumption by subsidizing buyers of cars and household appliances, according to the ministry.     For example, consumers can first sell their old household appliances to recycling companies and obtain a certification card from the recyclers. PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi underlined here Wednesday the importance of tapping new areas of economic growth so as to enhance cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN).     Yang noted that one area of development is to implement plans to enhance agricultural productivity by drawing on advanced technology and to accelerate the cooperation on new and renewable energies. The ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting is held in Phuket, Thailand, on July 22, 2009."We have maintained high-level exchanges, enhanced political mutual trust, shared development experience and strengthened confidence in cooperation," Yang said at the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Wednesday afternoon.     China and ASEAN have completed negotiations on the China-ASEAN Investment Agreement, paving the way for the full establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) in 2010.     The ASEAN on Monday appreciated China's active role in developing transportation infrastructure between the two sides and welcomed the establishment of the 10 billion U.S. dollar fund for bilateral investment cooperation.     In April, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that China has decided to set up a 10 billion U.S. dollar "China-ASEAN Fund on Investment Cooperation" to support infrastructural development in the region.
