SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. "The only difference is we don't have a fire."RELATED: 10News?Complete Coverage of California WildfiresHeggie says there are no specific requirements for how many crews are kept in town, as it varies from time to time. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. Crews were able to put it out within 20 minutes and kept it from spreading to nearby vegetation.RELATED: BRUSH FIRE IGNITES IN RAMONA AMID RED FLAG WARNINGIn addition to Cal Fire, local departments have sent crews to the Woolsey and Camp Fires. That includes crews from San Diego Fire & Rescue, Lakeside Fire, Chula Vista Fire, Poway and Rancho Santa Fe. Tweets from SDFD and Lakeside detailed the deployments.  1927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A growing number of San Diego companies are offering a low-cost healthcare plan for their employees. However, those employees have to go to Mexico for services. “It's cheap. It's easier,” says Alejandra Martinez. She’s one of the employees at the Hotel del Coronado who has opted for the hotel's cross-border HMO health plan called SIMNSA, which is licensed by the State of California.“[Are you] saving like 60 to 80%?” we ask. “Oh, yes,” she responds.Christina Carrillo is the president and CEO of SIMNSA. She tells 10News, “For someone who is willing and able to cross the border and receive their healthcare, it's an attractive product for them.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: How to save money on your prescriptionsJust like any other insurance option, a San Diego employer can offer SIMNSA to its work force. The plan provides for ER and urgent care visits in the U.S., but for everything else like routine medical care and prescriptions, employees must go to Mexico. The company has a network of providers across the border. Drivers get a medical pass to avoid long border waits. The monthly savings can be significant.“From the studies that we have, a typical U.S.-based plan for a fully insured HMO product will charge over ,000.00 for a family to receive healthcare coverage. SIMNSA is about 0.00.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: What you should know about traveling with prescription drugs, medications10News reached out to the Medical Tourism Corporation, which says the Mexican government maintains an online database of accredited hospitals and licensed doctors. SIMNSA tells 10News that its doctors belong to the National College of Physicians. SIMNSA is building a new, private hospital in Tijuana.“The facilities that we own are first class,” says Carrillo.Several San Diego hotels, casinos and restaurants are offering the option to their employees. Currently, the plan is only open to Mexican nationals. That means you must have been born in Mexico, have a parent who was born in Mexico or you are married to a Mexican national.RELATED: San Diegans saving money on plane tickets out of the Tijuana Airport amid concerns over securityAlthough the plan is not eligible to non-Mexican nationals, SIMNSA says anyone can pay out of pocket to visit their doctors and facilities in Mexico.Martinez lives in Otay Mesa during the week and Tijuana on the weekends.Carrillo adds, “A lot of [members] reside here and a lot of them reside in Tijuana, cross into the United States to work, and then cross back home to receive their healthcare.” 2582

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local casting director making it big in Hollywood after signing stars for a movie hitting theaters Friday. The movie, The Last Full Measure, is based on soldier William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr. who rescued more than 60 men during the Vietnam War. Casting Director Iris Hampton fell in love with the script the first time she read it, "I couldn't put it down, it was so beautiful." She was born and raised in San Diego in a military family and married a Marine Veteran, bringing the plot close to home.Hampton got into the business during a vacation to Hawaii. She said she went to the Magnum P.I. office and asked if they needed any help, "they said not right now, but why don't you come back in three months? So I came home, packed my bags and I went."Since then she's worked with big names like Chuck Norris and the Power Rangers. "I am going on my 28th and 29th season of that show," she said referring to the Power Rangers.Seven years ago she signed on to The Last Full Measure. The movie follows Pitsenbarger, Jr. during Operation Abilene in the Vietnam War. He descended from a helicopter while troops were under fire and rescued as many as he could, before he was killed. The film then follows the men who worked for decades to get Pitsenbarger, Jr. the Medal of Honor. "It ended up being 32 years they fought for him to get the medal of honor," she said."Pitts was a hero and a legend," Hampton said paratroopers idolize him. With a deep love and respect for the military, Hampton said this project is the pinnacle of her career. She signed stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Irvine,Christopher Plummer, Ed Harris and the late Peter Fonda for the movie."I was just so proud and I am just so proud of each and every one of them," she said she can't wait for the movie to hit theaters so San Diegans can see it. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report is calling for San Diego County jail reforms to address mental health issues and inmate suicides. From 2014-2016, 17 people have died by suicide while being held in a San Diego County jail facility, according to an investigation?by Disability Rights California (DRC).By this rate, the group says San Diego County's rate of inmate suicide is "staggeringly" high compared to national, statewide, and local data. During this three-year period, the county's rate of 107 deaths per 100,000 was double the national rate of 50 per 100,000, the group says.More: TEAM 10 INVESTIGATIONS"People with mental health needs and their families deserve better," DRC Attorney Rebecca Cervenak said. "Without appropriate community services and improved conditions, people will continue to suffer."The report says four aspects contribute to the high suicide rate: over-incarceration of people with mental health needs, lack of jail oversight, failure to provide mental health treatment and harmful solitary confinement, and a lack of efficient suicide prevention.DRC spoke with jail staff, inmates, and San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) leadership as part of their investigation. The SDSO said they welcome feedback regarding the jail system and will work to improve procedures, but had a number of concerns with how data was gathered and recommendations were formed: 1409
