SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of ladies in the North County are part of a nonprofit group that has focused on philanthropic projects for 20 years. Since April, however, six of the women in the group have been on a new mission. "We all go in separate cars and are in a horseshoe line, and someone will ring the doorbell. When the person answers then we're in good shape to sing, ask them how they're doing and tell them we love them and care about them."The group, who call themselves Masquerade Brigade, sing to those who are elderly and vulnerable to COVID-19 on their birthdays. "Just the human connection means a lot to them and it makes them feel like they're not forgotten," said Sophia Bouvier, a member of the singing group.The individuals they sing to are people who they volunteered with before we entered a COVID world."They've texted us after, 'I've been visited by the Masquerade Brigade. You can't believe how uplifting it is to see their faces and listen to their smiles as they sing,'" described Bouvier.Their gift of singing, small gifts, and presence isn't something you can put a price tag on they said, "Kindness is free and it takes so little to make a big difference."The group is out singing every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and have visited over 25 people since April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10 years ago, a Poway teen disappeared during a jog, and a collective sense of security was never the same. What followed were massive searches and an outpouring of support from the community. The investigation led to the arrest of the man who killed teenagers Chelsea King, 17, and Amber Dubois, 14. Carrie Cave's daughter Amber vanished in 2009 while walking to Escondido High. She planned to purchase a lamb that day and raise it as part of a school program. Her fate was revealed a year later after Poway High School senior Chelsea King went missing during a jog near Lake Hodges."I remember not being able to breathe. Your whole body is shaking," said Brent King, Chelsea's father.The evidence trail led to convicted sex offender John Gardner, who was ultimately convicted for a series of crimes, including the rape and murder of the two girls. Their bodies were recovered. After an emotional confrontation with Gardner in prison, Cave decided to forgive Gardner before he was sentenced."I got the answers about her last moments that I wanted ... I forgave him because I had another daughter to raise, and if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to live," said Cave.Cave started a search and rescue group. Her dog Amber discovered the remains of missing San Diego native and nursing student Michelle Le in the Bay Area in 2011."It was a lot to take in. I sat under a tree for two hours and cried," said Cave.That emotion is something the King family also knows well. The family channeled their grief and helped pass Chelsea's Law, a state law which enhanced sentences, parole terms and monitoring for violent sex offenders who commit crimes against children. To date, more than 2,500 offenders have been charged under Chelsea's Law."Because of Chelsea's Law, our children are safer, but that doesn't mean they're safe," said King.Besides advocating for laws, the King family's nonprofit Chelsea's Light Foundation has handed out over 0,000 in scholarships to local children. A run celebrating Chelsea's memory was held for eight years, before coming to an end.In 2014, Chelsea’s brother Tyler King directed a documentary he called “Chelsea’s Light: A Brother’s Journey.” "She is with us. That's the best I can tell you. She drives us every day to smile, to see life in a really beautiful way," said King.For Cave, a decade after the arrest of her daughter's killer, her grief is still complicated."It gets easier, but it still hurts ... I do good sometimes and then my emotions get all screwed up," said Cave.Cave says her she's still forging her daughter's legacy. She plans to start fostering children in the probation system."Not many people are willing to take in the kids. I just want to help kids. That would be a good legacy," said Cave. 2773

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Carlsbad woman on a popular hiking trail denied the allegations against him during a virtual arraignment Thursday morning.Through his attorney, the teen denied all allegations. He faces charges in connection with the Nov. 23 death of 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was on a morning walk at Hosp Grove Trail when Carlsbad police investigators said she was attacked and stabbed to death.On Dec. 14, Carlsbad police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in the case. Little information on the teen was released, but police noted the suspect is a Carlsbad resident.Thorborg's death struck a chord with many in the community. In the days following her death, a large group came to honor her by finishing the walk she started.The woman’s death also left many neighbors upset and concerned about their safety while on that trail.During Thursday’s arraignment, the judge also granted the teen's request to two phone calls -- one to his Mom, the other to his grandmother.ABC 10News learned Thorborg’s family was also listening to the hearing through the phone.Another hearing in the case is set for Dec. 22. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado Police officer who was among the first to arrive at the Spreckels Mansion after the death of Rebecca Zahau testified Monday in the wrongful death civil case.Zahau’s death was ruled a suicide in 2011 but her family believes she was killed. They sued Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend.Adam Shacknai called 911 to report the body hanging from the balcony.TIMELINE: Rebecca Zahau?caseIn testimony Monday, the unidentified officer said his duty was to go through the home and make sure no one was still inside, deeming it safe for investigators to enter. Investigators would later find a single boot print on the balcony where Zahau’s nude body was found bound and hanging. The shoe print would end up being one key piece of evidence. Investigators needed to find out who it belonged to, and if someone else was with Zahau before her body was discovered.SLIDESHOW: Coronado death investigationThe Zahau family lawyer is trying to prove Adam Shacknai was with her and played a role in her death. Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is not a single piece of evidence that ties him to Zahau’s death.  His DNA was never found at the scene, and there were no eyewitness accounts to support the Zahau family’s claim, lawyers say. The officer on the witness stand was questioned about the shoe print by Keith Greer, Zahau’s family lawyer.“Do you know whether or not that footprint on the deck is yours?” Greer asked.“Personally I do not, but I’ve been told that it is,” replied the officer.He said as part of the investigation, his boots were taken in as evidence.Investigators later determined the print was accidentally left behind by the officer during his sweep of the home.The same officer who testified answered questions from Shacknai’s lawyers about a call he responded to at the home days before Zahau’s death.Zahau’s boyfriend’s son, Max Shacknai, had suffered a life-threatening fall inside of the home while in her care.“Once I entered the house I saw a small boy on the ground with some debris on him,” said the officer.He went on to say he remembers seeing Zahau very emotional and crying, but doesn’t remember directly speaking with her.A PERT counselor, a fingerprint expert and a handwriting expert are also expected to testify Monday. 2314
