SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Attorney's Office Thursday urged families with guns in the home to practice proper firearm safety while self- quarantining to keep the weapons out of the hands of children.With stay-at-home orders issued at the state and local levels, and schools closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City Attorney Mara Elliott's office said gun safety is paramount."When you have guns and children in the home and do not practice safe storage, you are increasing the risk that someone will be accidentally shot," Elliott said. "Children are very resourceful when it comes to locating things their parents thought they'd never find. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Poway man accused of running a million dollar Ponzi scheme has pleaded guilty to grand theft and securities fraud. He is slated to be sentenced to a dozen years in state prison next month for orchestrating the scheme that scammed nearly 50 victims, the California Department of Insurance announced Wednesday.Team 10 first spoke to several alleged victims of Dougherty last year. They said he stole the money he was supposed to invest for them. Sheriff's investigators said he targeted the elderly planning for retirement. He offered victims investment opportunities in companies he owned, then used some of their funds for his personal expenses like home remodeling, travel and college tuition, according to officials.A spokesperson for the District Attorney's Office said 47-year-old Christopher Dougherty pleaded guilty to three counts of securities fraud, three counts of grand theft, and admitted to a white collar crime enhancement.Dougherty also used some of the victims' money to pay back other investors "in classic Ponzi fashion," according to the Department of Insurance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported a record-high 1,091 new COVID-19 infections and eight deaths Friday, raising the region's totals to 69,231 cases and 960 deaths.Four women and four men died between Nov. 1 and Nov. 19. Their ages ranged from early 50s to early 90s. All had underlying medical conditions.Friday was the 10th consecutive day more than 600 new coronavirus cases were reported by the county, and the most reported in a single day. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria.
