SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An East Village couple was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly subjecting a 3-year old child to torture and sexual abuse over a several-month period while caring for the toddler at their home, San Diego police reported.Officers arrested Marcos Javier Ramirez, 27, and 25-year-old Vennesia Ruiz in the Midway area on Tuesday evening, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said.Ramirez and Ruiz had been entrusted by an acquaintance to care for the child when the abuse allegedly began last October, Takeuchi said. Three months later, the toddler's mother began to suspect that there was abuse occurring and notified the police, the spokesman said.Ramirez was booked on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor, forcible sex with a foreign object, torture and child cruelty, according to jail records. Ruiz was being held on suspicion of two counts of the latter charge. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Wednesday they received reports of the county's third person to die of flu-related causes since the 2019-20 flu season began.The 80-year-old north county man died Nov. 1, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He had received this season's flu vaccine prior to his death and had additional medical conditions. Health officials received reports of this flu season's first death in August. The county also confirmed 58 flu cases last week, nearly double the 30 confirmed cases from the previous week. County health officials have already confirmed 420 flu cases this season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. At this time last flu season, officials had confirmed only 157 cases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four men allegedly bringing several dozen pounds of drugs through the coastal North County were arrested today following a road chase from Solana Beach to Carlsbad, authorities said.The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m., when detectives tried to pull over a vehicle with five people in it on Interstate 5 near Lomas Santa Fe Drive, according to sheriff's officials.The driver refused to yield, continuing on to the north for about four miles before exiting onto Encinitas Boulevard, Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A United Airlines flight scheduled to take off from San Diego International Airport was diverted from the runway just before departure Friday due to an undisclosed mechanical issue with one of the plane's engines.Flight 478 was scheduled to take off for Denver shortly before noon, but was recalled while on the airport's taxiway. The plane was safely escorted back to the airport's terminal and the issue occurred at low speed, according to United.``The aircraft safely returned to the gate and customers deplaned normally,'' a United spokesperson said in a statement. ``We are making arrangements to get our customers to their final destination as soon as possible.''Roughly 120 passengers were aboard the flight.
