BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw 86 "blue sky" days, or days with fairly good air quality, in the first four months of this year, a sign that years of anti-pollution efforts made by the Olympic host city continue to pay off.     The number of "blue sky" days was 11 more than the same period of last year, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.     The Chinese capital recorded 67 blue sky days in the first quarter, 12 more than in the corresponding period last year.     Meanwhile, major pollution indices, including concentrations of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matters in the air, kept dropping markedly.     Beijing has input 120 billion yuan (17.1 billion U.S. dollars) in improving the air quality in the past years, and the number of "blue sky" days increased to 246 last year from 100 in 1998, when the capital launched the "blue sky" drive.     Meanwhile, Beijing's neighbouring municipality Tianjin, the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Shandong, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are lending a hand to the capital to attain anti-pollution goals. These efforts include closing major polluters, removing outmoded cabs and reconditioning gas stations to capture harmful chemicals.     Beijing aims to have 70 percent of the days up to standard this ear, which meant there should be at least 256 blue sky days.     It has been working to reduce pollution and improve the air quality to ensure a "Green Olympics."     For example, the municipal government cut public transport fares in an attempt to lure local residents out of their private cars, which could cut auto emissions. The city also converted 18,000 outdated coal-fired boilers and installed electrical heaters in 20,000 detached houses, replacing coal-heated devices.     Beijing is also considering traffic controls during the Olympics, in which drivers with even- and odd-numbered license plates, except taxis, buses and emergency vehicles, would only be able to drive on alternate days. Offenders would be fined.     During a test of this proposal conducted from Aug. 17-20, about1.3 million cars were taken off the city roads each day and the amount of pollutants discharged was cut by 5,815.2 tons, according o a report by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.

BEIJING, June 6 -- Shareholders of China Vanke Co, the country's largest publicly traded property developer, have approved a decision to spend 100 million yuan to rebuild homes in quake-stricken Sichuan.     The company has been under fire from netizens since the earthquake after Wang Shi, its high-profile chairman, announced the real estate giant would donate 2 million yuan to the quake-hit areas and told his employees not to donate more than 10 yuan.    In the face of the ensuing barrage of criticism by the media and netizens, Wang apologized on his blog. At yesterday's meeting, he apologized to shareholders as well: "I want to apologize unconditionally to all shareholders, I won't try to defend myself."     Wang also admitted his comments about quake donations have damaged Vanke's brand image and he was sorry for that.     As a lesson from this episode, Wang said, Vanke would have a spokesperson in the future and try to desist from doing anything that hits its share prices, as it did this time. Zhang said the decision of the shareholders to clear the funding also reflects the company's determination to contribute to the relief work in a big way.     Vanke's investments in Sichuan will be made over the next three to five years, Vanke had said in a previous statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.     The May 12 earthquake in Sichuan province destroyed 5.4 million homes and damaged 21.4 million, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. More than 12 million people left homeless by the earthquake will have to be relocated.     "Vanke may build anti-quake homes there to broaden its property development," Bloomberg quoted Liu Xihui, a real estate analyst at Pingan Securities Co, as saying. "More developers may follow suit."     Vanke rose 4.7 percent to 20.5 yuan in Shenzhen trading on Wednesday. The stock has dropped 29 percent this year after almost tripling in 2007. Trading was suspended yesterday because of the meeting.

CHENGDU, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Jiang Xiaojuan, a policewoman who was well-known to the Chinese public for feeding infants with breast milk after the May 12 quake, has been officially promoted to a ranking post at a local police bureau, despite a nationwide controversy about the promotion.     Jiang was appointed a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee of the Jiangyou Public Security Bureau and the bureau's vice commissar on Thursday, an official surnamed Su from the organization department of the Jiangyou CPC Committee, Sichuan Province, told Xinhua on Saturday.     Jiang was currently on a speaking tour and would assume office as soon as she returned to Jiangyou, said the official.     Su denied media reports that the promotion had been suspended because of controversy. Jiang Xiaojuan, a policewoman, is feeding an infant with breast milk after the May 12 quake    Many people voiced objections when the Jiangyou government sought public opinion after making the promotion. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.
