BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Being the only foreign rescue team to run medical-aid stations in quake-ravaged Haiti, Chinese rescuers are giving quake victims what they desperately need: medical assistance, team members told Xinhua via phone Saturday.     The China International Search and Rescue Team, arriving in Port-au-Prince at 2 a.m. local time on Jan. 14, opened the first medical assistance station at 8 p.m. the next day, said captain Hou Shike.     The station had been treating patients pulled out of debris and provided medical support to medical and security personnel, he said.     China's second station in the refugee camp near the office building of Haitian prime minister had treated and some 120 people, while giving hygiene tips and conducting epidemic prevention work in the camp.     "To prevent epidemics, we had sterilized an area of 300 square meters in the refugee camp crammed with thousands of quake victims," Hou said.     "Confronted with severe wound infection, numerous refugees are in urgent need of professional medical treatment," said Fan Haojun, deputy captain of the team.     He said although local volunteers had done their best to offer basic treatment, but because of the lack of wound cleansing, infections among some of the wounded had deteriorated that even small operations costed more time and medicines than usual, said Fan.     The Chinese rescue team of more than 60 people left Beijing for the Caribbean island Wednesday night along with 10 tonnes of food, equipment and medicines.     The massive quake also left eight Chinese police officers, serving in China's peacekeeping forces, buried. The body of one missing police officer had been found, said China's public security ministry late Saturday night.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Most of the melamine-tainted milk products recently resurfacing in China have been recalled and destroyed, and none has been put into market or exported, the nation's food safety office said Friday."Due to early discovery and timely check, as of now, most of the tainted milk products have been recalled and destroyed, and none has entered the market or been exported," said the National Food Safety Rectification Office in a statement.Media reports said melamine-tainted dairy products have resurfaced in several Chinese provinces. Explaining why such cases could happen, the office said some producing and processing companies didn't fulfil the responsibilities for food safety and some violators hid tainted milk products or fabricated test reports to dodge inspections.The office urged related departments at all levels to thoroughly investigate the new cases and severely punish violators.In 2008, milk laced with melamine led to the deaths of six babies and sickened 300,000 others who had been fed with baby formula made from tainted milk. BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, said Wednesday the country would step up efforts to encourage investment from the private sector.The government would encourage private investment in sectors currently mainly state controlled such as infrastructure for transport, telecommunications and energy, public utility, scientistic and technological programs for national defense, and the building of affordable housing, according to a statement released after the Cabinet's executive meeting Wednesday chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.The State Council called for private firms, which played an important role in creating jobs, to strengthen independent innovation and roll out more new products, according to the statement.The government would also help some private enterprises set up technology research centers.Private companies were welcome to participate in the reform of state firms by purchasing a stake in them, it said.The government said it would create a good environment for private investment by setting up a sound administrative service system and amend unfavorable laws and regulations.In an effort to combat the global financial downturn, the government agreed at the Central Economic Work Conference last December to promote private enterprises so to create jobs, to increase market access for private investment and protect the legitimate rights and interests of private investors.
