Small businesses employ roughly half of all Americans, but new data is showing many of these businesses are closing permanently.“It’s an excruciatingly hard decision,” said Martha Studstill. “You know small business owners put their heart and soul into their business.”For more than a decade Studstill has owned a small gift shop, Uptown Gifts, in South Carolina.“Until COVID came along we were buzzing,” said Studstill.Originally, in March, the plan for Uptown Gifts was to close temporarily for a few weeks. However, the shop has now been closed for more than three months. She has only been able to list items online, resulting in sales being down by 75%.However, sales aside and more importantly to Studstill, the danger of COVID-19, especially for someone her age, hasn’t subsided.“When we closed on March the 16, I really had no idea we would be where we are at today,” said Studstill.Studstill thought she would be reopening, not only earlier, but to fewer cases of COVID-19.Cases have actually been on the rise in her state. The uptick started most distinctly after reopenings. So, with the financial risk and uncertainty added to Studstill’s health risk of running the shop, she feels closing is her only choice.“I think if I were younger, I would not have made the same decision, but I am where I am at,” she added.Around the country, there is a wave of permanent business closures happening. One report done by Yelp shows more than 143,000 businesses listed on its platform closed between March and June. Now, roughly 35% of those businesses have indicated their closures are permanent. Most of those businesses closing are small businesses.“The numbers that are coming out are really sad,” said Frank Knapp with Small Business for America’s Future.Knapp heads the newly formed organization, pushing for better help for small businesses in Congress’ next stimulus package.“Our proposal for Small Business for America’s Future is that we need to put together grants for the really small businesses to help them get through this recession so that they are healthy on the other side and our economy can get back up and running again,” said Knapp.Saving small businesses could save jobs and be the fastest way to rebound the economy.“Small businesses hire about 50% of all workers in this country,” said Knapp, “We know from the last recession, it was small businesses that got us back on our economic feet again, not big businesses. That’s what one 11-year-old is trying to accomplish.Fred Ginman may not have the legs of an athlete, but he certainly has the heart."That’s the message I think Fred has to everyone, 'don’t stop even though we are under coronavirus times,'" said mother Isabella Amaral.Fred is on day three of a 10-day 5K. The goal is 10 laps a day, or 500 meters, around the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay courtyard."The physical therapy we do here it's very modern, very sophisticated, and it's giving Fred hope," said Amaral.Fred and his mom are from Brazil. They have spent more than 600 nights at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay since 2012, as Fred receives treatment for cerebral palsy. The goal is to one day walk on his own."That's our dream, that's our goal, that's what we envision every night, we envision walking freely on the beach," said Amaral.The family said Ronald McDonald House has been there for them every step of the way and now they want to return the favor. All money raised in support of Fred's Fun Run will go back to helping families like their own."Because since the beginning the Ronald McDonald House has embraced our mission to get Fred walking freely," said Amaral.Ronald McDonald House acknowledges its been a tough year. Their costs have increased while their funding has decreased during the pandemic. Several retailers across the U.S. have announced that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Southwest Airlines will look less like a zoo.Passengers will be allowed to bring only cats and dogs on board as emotional support animals beginning in September, and only one per customer. The animals must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times.Southwest says passengers will need to present a letter from a doctor or licensed mental health professional on the day of departure.The airline will also limit the types of trained service animals in the cabin. Only dogs, cats and miniature horses will be allowed. Service animals are specially trained to help people with disabilities.Fliers have become increasingly bold in bringing animals on planes.In January, a woman reportedly tried to board a United Airlines flight with an emotional support peacock. Delta says passengers have also flown with "comfort turkeys, gliding possums known as sugar gliders, snakes, spiders and more."Since the beginning of the year, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta and United have all introduced rules similar to Southwest's.The airline industry has called on the Transportation Department to update its guidelines for animals on planes. Some relatives of Mollie Tibbetts are pushing back against politicians who are blaming the country's immigration system for the Iowa college student's death.A body believed to be Tibbetts' was found in Iowa on Tuesday, a month after she went missing during an evening jog. The man arrested in her death is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.President Donald Trump and other Republican politicians have highlighted the case to argue for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.But some of Tibbetts' family members, including her aunt, Billie Jo Calderwood, say they don't want her death to be used for political leverage."I don't want Mollie's memory to get lost amongst politics," Calderwood told CNN, emphasizing that she's speaking only for herself.She said her family received an outpouring of love from people of all races, religions and ethnicities during the search for her niece."It's not about race, it's about people joining together to do good," said Calderwood, who posted a similar message on Facebook.One of Tibbetts' second cousins, Samantha Lucas, also told CNN she wants Tibbetts' death removed from political discussion.Lucas said she didn't know her second cousin well, and isn't speaking for the whole family. But she says knows enough about Tibbetts to believe "she would not want this to be used as fuel against undocumented immigrants."CNN contacted Lucas after she pushed back against people on social media who mentioned Tibbetts as they railed against illegal immigration.Few of Tibbetts' relatives have spoken publicly on the issue.
