For anyone who is still deciding whether to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, there's an interactive map created by a team of researchers that can help with that decision.The interactive map, created by professors at the Georgia Institute of Technology, shows the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 when gathering with a group of 10 or more people in a given area.The map includes data for every U.S. county and shows the risk for infection using data of recent COVID-19 cases across the country.The data depends on the size and location of the gathering. For example, for a gathering of people in Fayette County, Kentucky, the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 is:28% for a group of 10 people39% for a group of 15 people48% for a group of 20 people56% for a group of 25 people81% for s group of 50 people.Nearly 40% of people say they will likely attend a Thanksgiving gathering with 10 or more people despite the risk of catching COVID-19, according to a recent survey by Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.Another survey of parents nationwide found nearly a third say the benefits of gathering with extended family for the holidays are worth the risk of spreading or getting the coronavirus. The survey, conducted by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in partnership with the University of Michigan, says almost 3-in-5 plan to see extended family in person.Experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year. FLORENCE, Ky. -- A Newport, Kentucky mom was arrested and charged with child endangerment Wednesday after she left her 1-year-old in her SUV at the Florence Mall, police said.Christina Krups, 29, left her child in her BMW for "at least 10 to 15 minutes," according to Florence Police Capt. Tom Grau.Mall security found the child after a group of people began to gather around the SUV, he said. The windows were down an inch and the car was locked, Grau said. It was 83 degrees outside the mall when security found the child. The temperature inside the car was 105 degrees."The 1-year-old child was still sleeping, had red cheeks and was sweating," Grau said. "The child, once awake, did not need further medical assistance and was released to the care of the father."Krups told police that "she just went into the mall for a couple minutes and knew she left her child inside the vehicle," according to a citation.Police took Krups to the Boone County jail. She's charged with a first-degree felony.On the same day, a prosecutor in Warren County, Ohio announced he wouldn't bring charges against a mom whose daughter died in her car in August. Prosecutor David Fornshell and Warren County Coroner's Office investigator Doyle Burke said the toddler's mother, a P&G employee, left the 15-month-old unattended in her parked car for nine hours on Aug. 23.Fornshell, however, said the mother did not act recklessly. He said the little girl was well-cared for, healthy and her parents were "perhaps excessively" safety-conscious."By all accounts, these were really good parents," Fornshell said. Investigators talked to family members, coworkers and neighbors about the parents and daughter.Fornshell said he didn't believe charges were appropriate, nor did they match the legal standard in this case."The closest charge that might be applicable is involuntary manslaughter ... and the closest felony is endangering children, where parents create a substantial risk," Fornshell said. "However, in both of these, the mental state of a parent must be reckless."Recklessness is more than a mistake, even if it's a deadly mistake," Fornshell said. FORT WORTH, Texas -- A baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan University who told a Colorado athlete that the university doesn't accept recruits from Colorado because of past issues with drug tests has been fired.University President Frederick Slabach said in a news conference Thursday morning that Mike Jeffcoat was fired because of the email he sent to the Colorado athlete as well as an unspecified NAIA rule violation."The comments Mike Jeffcoat made are in no way a reflection of our university or its values," Slabach said. "We do not tolerate discrimination."Because of an ongoing investigation, Slabach did not provide any details about the alleged rule violation, only saying it was related to the eligibility of players and not any kind of discrimination.Gavin Bell, a senior at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora, expressed interest in attending Texas Wesleyan University in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and joining the school's baseball program, but was rejected in an email from Jeffcoat.That email read: "Thanks for the interest in our program. Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test. We have made a decision to not take a chance on Student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians. Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg said Monday that he is refusing to comply with a grand jury subpoena in the Russia investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller."Let him arrest me," Nunberg said in an interview with The Washington Post. Now, grocers and food manufacturers are working to make sure that doesn’t happen again this winter.“We are a specialty market focusing on the meats and protein,” said Mike Silvestri, general manager at one of three Tony’s Meats & Market locations.Like many grocery stores, both big and small, Tony’s Meats & Market saw the disruption in the supply chain back in March.“What really screwed up a lot of things in this pandemic was people were buying way more than they normally do, not necessarily here, but in the grocery sector in general,” Silvestri said. It's something he is trying to avoid moving forward.“We don’t need to panic buy. I think you buy what you need for the week like you're normally shopping,” he said. “So, just remain calm.”As U.S. coronavirus cases continue to rise--paired with flu season, holidays, and other factors--experts are once again concerned about what the impact on the supply chain might be. So, grocers and food manufacturers are preparing for whatever may come with the winter season, many resorting to stockpiling themselves to avoid running out.“On one side, they're building up inventory to make sure they're ready for it. But on the other side inventory is additional costs,” Jack Buffington, a supply chain expert and professor at the University of Denver, said. “Their concern is the weeks of inventory they had before the pandemic hit was not sufficient for them to run out of supplies. So, particularly for big events like Thanksgiving, to make sure they have ample supply because that's a big moneymaker for them.”For large chain grocery stores, stockpiling in large warehouses is a viable option. For smaller grocers like Tony’s, they only have so much space.“We do have a warehouse. It’s not as monstrous as most people would imagine,” Silvestri said.The company has already prepared by buying pallets of food items to keep at their warehouse to get through the season. “What we would call necessities like pastas, ground beef, pasta sauces, canned items, things like that,” he said.A buyer for Tony’s told us even with the gap of up to three months in June to start getting stuff back in stock, they’ve been stockpiling staple items since March for this winter.“Christmas has begun October 1,” Buffington said. “The entire supply chain is moving things forward. For one reason due to the risk of supply and demand.”“We all had to be on the ball a little bit early this year. Obviously, we start pretty early as it is but because of all the COVID-19 stuff we’ve had to really be mindful of how much we’re looking to shoot over,” Silvestri said. Silvestri said he sees everyone getting concerned about not having enough supply or demand, due to uncertainty.“COVID-19 was a complete catalyst of what you're seeing as a redefinition of the supply chain and the economy,” Buffington said. “I think everybody’s getting scared of not having enough supply and not having enough demand.”As Silvestri and the rest of the crew at Tony's prepare for an uncertain Thanksgiving and Christmas, he says they feel ready.“The pace since COVID-19 started has really been a holiday pace anyway,” he said. 3240
