LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live on Louisa Drive in La Mesa say they're living in fear every day because of a rise in crime connected to two homes they suspect are drug houses.The residents are asking the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to increase patrols in their neighborhood and do more to enforce the law at those homes."I have kids, and it's just not a safe place anymore," said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous because that person fears retaliation from neighbors. "You never know what's going to happen."According to one sergeant from the Rancho San Diego sheriff's substation, there are two homes on Louisa Drive that have people living in them with a criminal history. Right now, deputies are investigating those homes to see if any criminal activity is going on.The sergeant says there are other homes around the corner from Louisa Drive that are also under investigation.A search of crimemapping.com shows seven reported crimes in the last six months on Louisa Drive, most of them drug-related. Last January, 10News reported on one woman on the street who woke up to a pair of strange men standing in her bedroom."The concept of someone in your house while you're sleeping, it's startling," said her daughter, who also found her room ransacked.Neighbors also complain of people passed out in the street, walking through their yards at all hours of the day and night, and leaving garbage in their yards.The sheriff's department says people can file requests for extra patrol at certain hours. They try to accommodate those requests depending on staffing levels and other, more urgent calls. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets.  The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water.It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally.  So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney.If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings.  Olney said that could happen by 2023. 1045

LA MESA (KGTV) -- A man who mistook his gas for the brakes crashed into the side of the Marque Urgent Care Wednesday.Police say the man was driving his SUV on Lake Murray Boulevard near Dallas Street when he hit the gas instead of braking.The vehicle then struck a tree, hit the Marque Urgent Care, taking out two load-bearing pillars, knocked over two handicapped parking signs and eventually became lodged in an iron railing at a barbecue restaurant.Following the crash, the urgent care facility was evacuated and closed.The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with cuts. 603

LEMON GROVE, Calif (KGTV) -- A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car in Lemon Grove Thursday evening.According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 7:50 p.m. near Massachusetts Avenue and Westview Place, just south of State Route 94.Deputies say when they arrived at the scene and found a male bicyclist with visible injuries to his legs.Paramedics rushed the bicyclist to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's name and age were not immediately available.The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.Anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at 619-337-2000. 772
