BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China urged Sudan here on Tuesday to take substantial and effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel after four Chinese workers were kidnapped and killed.     "It is one of the most serious killing cases of oversea Chinese workers in recent years and we are very shocked by it," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said via a phone conversation with his Sudanese counterpart Deng Alor.     "The Chinese side feels strong indignation and condemns the inhumane terrorist act by the kidnappers on unarmed Chinese company staff, " Yang told Alor, according to a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday evening.     Sudanese officials earlier reported to the Chinese Embassy in Sudan that five of the nine kidnapped workers were killed on Monday, with two rescued and two missing. It revised the numbers late Tuesday afternoon, saying four were killed, four were rescued and the other was still missing, according to the Foreign Ministry.     The nine workers from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) were kidnapped from an oil field near the western Sudanese region of Darfur on Oct. 18.     The Chinese Embassy said they were taken by unknown militants in the Southern Kordofan State, but no armed group had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.     "The Chinese leaders and Chinese government are highly concerned about the case, asking for the utmost rescue efforts with the precondition of ensuring the safety of the kidnapped," Yang, who is among the entourage of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Russia, added.     "We hope the Sudanese side will continue its rescue effort, bring the murderers to severe punishment, and take all substantial and effective measures to prevent similar things happening again," Yang said.     Alor expressed his condolences to the victims and his sympathy to the victims' families as well as the Chinese government and Chinese people, promising that the Sudanese government would continue its rescue mission for the missing Chinese worker, make the utmost efforts to bring the murderers to justice and protect the safety of Chinese people in Sudan, according to the statement.

MACAO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Saturday said here that Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) should promote its long-term economic diversification.     Xi, who paid the first official visit to Macao since assuming the office of Chinese Vice President in March 2008, made the remark when meeting with the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah and 113 representatives from all walks of the local society in the Macao East Asian Games Dome. The land-strapped SAR has long been requesting a part in its development.     Xi arrived in Macao earlier this morning, starting his two-day visit to the island city. Xi paid two visits to the SAR in 2001 and 2005 respectively before assuming the Chinese vice-presidency.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders offered their Spring Festival greetings to the nation at a gathering to mark the coming Lunar New Year here Saturday.     President Hu Jintao chaired the gathering of more than 4,000 people from various sections of society.     On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council, Hu, who is general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, conveyed festival greetings to all Chinese people and his thanks to the friends of China across the world.     Premier Wen Jiabao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a speech.     2008 was an extraordinary year for China, in which the country succeeded in fighting the severe winter weather, the May 12 earthquake, in hosting the Beijing Olympics and launching the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft and actively coping with the current international financial crisis, he said.     The achievements "demonstrated that no difficulty could defeat the great Chinese people and the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics will be broadened," he said.     The country will embrace the 60th founding anniversary of new China in 2009, Wen said.     Priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth this year. This will be achieved through expanding domestic demand especially consumption demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, he said.     All will ultimately target maximally satisfying people's increasing material and cultural needs, he added.     In 2009, China will enhance and improve macroeconomic control efforts and carry out an active fiscal policy, as well as a moderately easy monetary policy, he said.     "We have the confidence and the ability to overcome various difficulties and achieve further development," he added.     The government will pool strength of the nation to do some practical things for the people, including expanding employment, improving the social security system, promoting medicare system reform, enhancing development of the cultural industry, and ensuring smooth rebuilding in disaster-hit areas, he said.     The government will also strive to solve people's housing difficulties and to provide satisfactory education that ensures no child drops out of school because of financial difficulties, he said.     Other leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also attended the gathering.     Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional Chinese festival of family reunion. SHUIFU, Yunnan, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Jinsha River in south China was blocked on Sunday to make way for construction of a new hydropower project on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.     At a cost of 43.4 billion yuan (about 6.3 billion U.S. dollars), the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Project is expected to be completed by 2015. It will be able to generate 30.7 billion kw hours of electricity a year.     "Electricity generated by hydropower stations will mainly be sold to China's eastern, southern and central regions," said Li Yong'an, general manager of the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation. "Sichuan and Yunnan provinces will also benefit from it." Workers cheer for the damming of the Jinsha River in the construction of the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station which is the third largest of its kind in China.     In addition to providing power, the project will play a role in flood control and farmland irrigation.     About 125,100 people from three counties of Yunnan Province and three counties of Sichuan Province have been resettled to make way for the project.     The Xiangjiaba project is one of a series of hydropower plants China plans to build on the Jinsha River to supply electricity to its economically more developed coastal regions.     The 2,290-kilometer-long Jinsha River, a tributary of Yangtze River, originates in Tanggula Range and flows through Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan.     Water is mostly stored in the river's middle and lower reaches where China plans to build 12 hydropower stations to share a 59.08- million-kilowatts installed capacity. SHANGHAI, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's first local financial tribunal opened on Thursday in the People's Court of Shanghai Pudong New Area.     The tribunal, with three judges, will accept both individual and institutional civil cases, with no limit on claims, said a judicial official.     Lin Xiaojun, vice chief judge of the tribunal, said the global financial crisis has triggered an increase in financial disputes.     Financial innovation and opening-up had also seen a wider variety of cases, including finance product and company stock ownership disputes, said Lin.     Ding Shouxing, president of the People's Court of Shanghai Pudong New Area said the tribunal would also provide legal services for financial institutions, release case analyses for market information, and make proposals to prevent and resolve financial risks.     The tribunal would hire financial experts as assessors, and setup a consultative team to guarantee just, efficient, professional and clean hearings.     The Ministry of Justice has announced no plans to extend the tribunals to the other parts of the country.     Since 2006, the People's Court of Pudong New Area has heard 5,603 financial cases, including those relating to bank loans, credit cards, securities and assurance, involving more than 1.6 billion yuan (242 million U.S. dollars).     The Chinese government approved Pudong New Area, situated in eastern Shanghai, as a trial base for opening-up in 1990. Since then, 530 domestic and foreign financial institutions have been established there.
