SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three East San Diego County school districts are moving back to distance learning because of this weekend's harsh weather.The San Diego County Office of Education says schools in Julian Union Elementary School District and Warner Unified School District will move to distance learning on Monday. The county made move due to forecasted snow Sunday night and freezing temperatures on Monday.SDCOE added that Julian Union High School will have a snow day without distance learning with a scheduled makeup day at the end of the school year."The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the county said in its announcement.The National Weather Service forecasts the Julian and Pine Valley areas will see one to two inches of snow overnight at 4,500 to 5,000 feet, and lows of 23 to 33 degrees. Monday, the high is expected to hover between 46 and 52 degrees before reaching the mid-50s on Tuesday.The mountain region should hit low- to mid-60s on Saturday, according to NWS. 1058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of 16-24 year olds looking for jobs is rising across the country, almost getting back to the level it was at before the recession.According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.89 million teens and young adults had jobs in the summer of 2017. That made it the 7th straight year of employment growth in that industry.Similarly, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24 fell for the 7th straight year. It was at 9.6%, the lowest it had been since 2000. While there still aren't as many teens and young adults working as there was in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, it's a sign that more are looking for, and finding jobs."I'm Saving for a Car"Like many of his peers, Coronado High School Junior Quinn Perez plans to work this summer. He already has a job lined up at Holland's Bicycles."I've worked there for about 2 years now and I've worked my wya up to one of the manager positions," Quinn says.His goal is simple, to save enough for a car."I've always been a fan of Camaros," he says, before adding, "But I'll probably go for a Honda or Jetta or something like that. A little more in my price range."Other students just like having their own money to spend, like Anna Hinz, who is still looking for a job for the summer."It makes me feel like I have a little control over everything I do, rather than my parents making plans for me.""It's all about the attitude"But for the people who do the hiring, why you're working can be as big of an indicator of success as anything.Patti Woods is the Talent Acquisition Supervisor for the YMCA. She oversees hiring of around 1,500 teens and young adults each summer to work as counselors and lifeguards.She says your attitude is as important as anything else."Skills can be learned," she says. "I want people who are positive, flexible and willing to take feedback."Woods advises teens and young adults to start their job search early. The YMCA does most of their summer hiring in the spring, because they have thousands of applicants to consider."Don't think you need to wait for the summer to find a summer job," she says. If you wait for summer, a lot of those jobs will be gone already."Woods says the Y still has some open positions. Other fields, like retail and restaurants still have lots of openings as well. A recent search of sites like jobs.com and Monster.com for the keywords "Teen Jobs, San Diego" turned up hundreds of jobs. Most of them were at malls or movie theaters.The Start of a CareerYour future plans are also something to keep in mind when looking for a summer job. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House announced Tuesday that it would start cracking down on what the President calls the "California Homeless Takeover." The administration's plans include destroying tents on the street and relocating the homeless population to government facilities. Some local homeless advocates said the plan lacks details and direction. Underneath arguably some of the most expensive condos in San Diego is a place people go to live, rent-free."I think it gives people the opportunity to stabilize and get ready for the next step in their life," Alpha Project Chief Operating Officer Amy Gonyeau said. "Address the issues that are causing them to become homeless."The Alpha Project's Bridge Shelter helps keep 325 people from sleeping on the streets every night. Still, there are nearly 8,000 others in San Diego County without a home. In Los Angeles County, there are 50,000 homeless. The numbers were so astounding, President Trump vowed to intercede. He plans to take down tents on the streets and place the homeless into government-backed facilities."We just can't play Whack-A-Mole and move people from the sidewalk to jail, to tents, to a government facility," independent homeless advocate Michael McConnell said. McConnell said he believes the President's plan is far too vague. "Whether it's a shared housing model, whether short-term or long-term rental assistance, whether it is actually building a brick and mortar supportive housing for some folks, it takes all of these interventions," McConnell said. Gonyeau says representatives from Los Angeles have visited more than a dozen times to study their Bridge Shelter and their seventeen wrap-around services."They want to replicate this model," Gonyeau said. "I know they are going to do that in LA, and some other cities as well."It has become a temporary relief that has helped hundreds of people cycle out of homelessness. But McConnell says this is not enough."I would redirect a lot of the money that we are currently spending on Band-Aids," McConnell said. "I would redirect that into rental assistance in housing dollars so that we can start nibbling away at this deficit."At the end of the day, both McConnell and Gonyeau say California needs more housing, not just affordable housing, but low-income housing. If the President's plan has that as an end goal, both say they are on board."We have a very large unsheltered homeless population in California, and we have an incredible affordable housing crisis here. Those go hand-in-hand," McConnell said. 10News learned that the city would be opening a fourth Bridge Shelter in the next two weeks to help the needs of the local homeless population. 2693

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The target at the center of a murder for hire plot is suing his former business partner and his associates. Ninus Malan says, he suffers from severe emotional distress as a result of his business partners actions."I wish this would go away, but I wake up every morning, and it's there," Malan told 10News. In November, federal authorities charged Salam Razuki, Sylvia Gonzales and Elizabeth Juarez with offenses related to a conspiracy to kidnap and kill a business associate over a dispute involving real estate investment properties, most of which were leased to marijuana dispensaries.   According to a complaint filed on November 2018, in October of that year, Salam Razuki and Sylvia Gonzales met with a Confidential Human Source and asked the source to arrange to kill Malan. The complaint says according to Razuki and Gonzales, they had invested in multiple properties and business ventures together and were not involved in a civil dispute over their assets. The complaint alleges, "Razuki and Gonzales told CHS1 (confidential human source) that they wanted CHS1 to 'Shoot him in the face,' 'to take him to Mexico and have him whacked,' 'or kill him in some other way.'"Federal authorities say Elizabeth Juarez later joined Razuki and Gonzales, and the three talked about having Malan killed.The complaint says the confidential human source, Gonzales, and Juarez discussed a cost of ,000 for "the job." Federal authorities say during one of the meetings, Gonzales went to the Goldn Bloom Dispensary and returned with ,000 cash. "After the meeting, CHS1 provided agents with ,000 case provided by Gonzales," the complaint says.Federal authorities say, "according to the complaint, on November 15, 2018, the source met with Razuki and stated, 'I took care of it.'" Razuki replied, "So he will take care of it, or it's done?" The source replied, "Done." Malan told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin that he's now forced to live his life day by day afraid for his family's safety. "My nine-year-old daughter had to see this on the news, and she knows all about it," Malan said. "I don't know how to explain it to her." Malan is suing Razuki, Gonzales, Juarez and a handful of businesses. The lawsuit alleges, interference with exercise of civil rights, unfair competition, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. The lawsuit says the "defendants committed the acts herein despicably, maliciously, and oppressively, with the wrongful intention of injuring plaintiff, from an improper and evil motive amounting to malice, and with the conscious disregard of the rights and safety of Plaintiff and others." "Mr. Malan and Mr. Razuki were involved in a number of businesses together," said Malan's attorney John Gomez of Gomez Trial Attorneys. "That relationship kind of fell apart, so litigation commenced." Gomez says Razuki brought a civil suit against Malan and Malan filed a lawsuit against Razuki. "That's a big litigation involving a lot of money," Gomez said. "Mr. Razuki apparently thought it was ok to put a hit on Mr. Malan to eliminate him from the litigation." Gomez told 10News all the businesses and entities named in the lawsuit are affiliated with Razuki and participants in the litigation. "When he puts a hit on Mr. Malan to advance the litigation he's doing it on behalf of all of these businesses and people," Gomez said. With a criminal case underway, Malan was limited in what he was willing to discuss. He thanked the FBI, his family and told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin he'll always be looking over his shoulder. "In the courts is where I'm seeking justice, not only for me but for my family who were terrorized by these people," Malan said. Criminal defense attorneys for Gonzales and Juarez have not yet responded to 10News requests for comment.Razuki's attorneys told 10News they have no comment. 4194

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane."
