SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is today investigating a fatal freeway crash in San Diego, authorities said.As of 3:35 a.m., multiple CHP units were still at the scene of the traffic collision in San Diego that shut down the five right lanes of the westbound Mission Valley (8) Freeway east of Mission Gorge Road and Fairmount Ave, according to a CHP dispatcher.At least one person has died, she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some low-level, non-violent inmates facing trials and being held in San Diego County jails are being considered for release in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the county's district attorney and sheriff announced Saturday."In the wake of an unprecedented Superior Court closure, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and San Diego County Sheriff's Department took several proactive steps this week to address the threat of the coronavirus to individuals arrested for low-level, non-violent crimes who normally would have been released if the court was open or can't afford to post jail," the DA and sheriff said in a joint statement.The DA's office did not say how many inmates have already been released under the new policies nor how many are expected to be released.District Attorney Summer Stephan said she and the sheriff were concerned about defendants who are not an imminent threat to pubic safety, who are unable to post bail and would be forced to wait weeks or potentially months for their first court appearance because of the court being shut down.Cases involving people in custody are being reviewed and if no charges are going to be filed, the jail will be notified by the district attorney so the person can be released, the statement said."If charges are going to be filed, the district attorney is working with the sheriff and the court on an electronic pre-arraignment review to identify individuals whose charges are eligible for immediate release or bail reduction," a news advisory said."We're taking these steps because it's the right thing to do in the face of extreme circumstances that pose a serious health risk to inmates and everyone who has contact with inmates..." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds.
