"Saturday Night Live" has fired one of its most recent hires, Shane Gillis, just days after videos of comedian making bigoted comments came to light."After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining 'SNL,'" an 'SNL' spokesperson on behalf of Lorne Michaels said in a statement to CNN. "We want 'SNL' to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for 'SNL.' We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard." 758

A man dropped off ,000 worth of toys to children in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on Saturday, continuing a tradition of providing toys for the community. According to NBC News, Adam Armstrong, a 35-year-old who said he grew up poor, drove a truckload of toys to Harris Gardens, a public housing complex in Harrisonburg. There, he was greeted by dozens of children and their families. These just weren't trinkets and candy canes. "He was giving away bikes, remote-controlled cars, real Barbie dolls, not Dollar Store Barbie dolls," property manager Sara Lewis-Weeks told NBC News. "He didn't miss anybody. His heart was truly in this."Lewis-Weeks compared the giveaway to when Oprah famously gave away cars to her entire audience. "They thought it was going to be a couple of stuffed animals, not, 'And you get a bike, and you get a bike, and you get a bike,' like an 'Oprah' for little kids," Lewis-Weeks told NBC News.Armstrong told NBC News that he felt blessed to be able to give children nice toys in time for Christmas."I remember Harrisonburg being a friendly small town," Armstrong said. "I remember government housing and a lot of poverty, crimes, drugs, violence and things of that nature. Every time I see kids, I know it's not their fault where they are."To read NBC 1288

A 70-year-old physician accused of cheating at this year's Los Angeles Marathon has died by suicide, officials said.Dr. Frank Meza, 70, was found dead in the Los Angeles River last Thursday. The Los Angeles County coroner's office listed his cause of death as "blunt force traumatic injuries" and said the manner of death was suicide.Last month, Meza clocked an astonishing time of 2 hours, 53 minutes and 10 seconds at the Los Angeles Marathon. It would have been a record for his age group. But that record was thrown out after marathon officials said they reviewed security footage and showed Meza leaving and re-entering the course at different places.Last week, Meza's widow said she didn't believe her husband would have taken his own life. But Meza's family did say he was under enormous stress over his disqualification and the cheating claims made in blog posts and media reports. And they believe he was treated unjustly."He was targeted, bullied and we tried to defend him the best we could," his daughter Lorena Meza told CNN on Friday. "He was so devastated that people could actually believe this."How the race officials and others say he cheatedThe controversy started after Meza, a retired South Pasadena physician and a longtime runner, finished the Los Angeles Marathon on March 24.His 2:53:10 time across 26.2 miles -- averaging about 6:37 minutes per mile -- was extraordinary at his age.The total time would have been more than a minute faster than the 1485

The number of veterans serving in Congress has been declining for decades. Veterans running now say reversing that trend would benefit all Americans. It’s election season and political candidates across the country are working their respective campaign trails, trying to earn your votes. But of all the people running for all the offices in 2020, there’s fewer politicians like these two: current U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-California, and Republican Casper Stockham, who’s running for Congress in Colorado. Both of whom served in branches of the United States military. Carbajal is a former U.S. Marine, serving as a mortarman. “When we serve our country in the military, there’s a common bond, there’s a common purpose,” Carbajal says. Stockham was in the U.S. Air Force, working as a weapons mechanic. “A lot of military people just have a deep-down patriotism,” Stockham says. The last midterm election brought a record number of female veterans to Congress. But a new study from the group 1007
