ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that it appears inevitable that COVID-19 will spread in United States communities. Officials said it’s no longer a matter of if, but when. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a conference call that the spread of the new coronavirus in countries other than China has officials concerned about outbreaks in the U.S. "Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country," said Messonier. "It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."The CDC says the agency is preparing to address the potential spread of the virus in the U.S. and it's encouraging Americans to begin planning as well. "We will maintain, for as long as practical, a dual approach where we continue measures to contain this disease, but also employ strategies to minimize the impact on our communities," said Messonier.Messonier said that officials don't know whether the spread of the disease in the U.S. would be mild or severe, but Americans should be ready for "significant disruptions" to their daily lives.“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad,” Messonnier said.If the virus begins to spread amongst Americans, the CDC says it will becomes increasingly important to implement basic precautions to prevent more infections. That includes staying home when ill and practicing respiratory and hand hygiene. Additionally, the CDC says community level intervention might include school dismissals and social distancing in other settings, like postponing or canceling large gatherings. Officials said it may become necessary for students and the workforce to meet over the internet, instead of in person.“For adults, businesses can replace in-person meetings with video or telephone conferences and increase teleworking options,” said Messonier. The virus is believed to have originated from Wuhan, China, where early patients had some link to a large seafood and live animal markets. The CDC says more than 2,400 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide, with a majority of the deaths in mainland China. However, other countries are now battling sizable outbreaks as well. Europe’s biggest outbreak is in Italy, where more than 280 people have reportedly been infected. Iran has reported at least 95 cases. And, South Korea has more than 970 cases. As of Tuesday, the CDC had confirmed 14 cases in the U.S., 12 being travel-related and two from person-to-person spread. A total of 43 cases have been confirmed in the group of people repatriated to the U.S. from either Wuhan or the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, the CDC says. Children diagnosed with SMA1 generally are unable to sit up or stand. Left untreated, the disease is typically fatal by age 2. In the past, this diagnosis would have been considered terminal. But a recently developed treatment has made it possible for children to survive and live a normal life. The drug is called Spinraza and it was approved by the FDA in 2016. It allows children to reach and maintain age appropriate developmental milestones, including sitting, crawling, and walking. The drawback is it only slows the progression of the disease. It also has to be injected into the spine every fourth months under anesthesia. Health and Human Services also said that some babies do not respond to the treatment. A second drug was released this year called Zolgensma, which would give Axel likely the best chance of living a normal life. The drug uses gene therapy IV fusion that replaces a missing gene. BEL AIR, Md. – A bank teller in Maryland is accused of forcing his way into the home of a 78-year-old customer who had removed a large amount of money.Deputies with the Harfod County Sheriff’s Office responded to the customer’s home in Bel Air on Nov. 11 in reference to a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they were informed that a man rang the doorbell and then forced his way into the home when the resident opened the door. The sheriff’s office says the suspect immediately began assaulting the 78-year-old man until a second resident, a 57-year-old woman, intervened. At that time, the suspect reportedly ran upstairs, and the second resident ran to a nearby home to call police.The suspect fled the area before to deputies arrived, but investigators later identified him as 19-year-old Nathan Michael Newell, a teller at the victim’s bank. “As the investigation continued, it was determined one of the victims had removed a large amount of money from the bank,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “Detectives gained information identifying a teller at the bank as a the suspect.”Newelll was arrested on Nov. 13 and charged with home invasion, robbery, 1st and 3rd degree burglary, and 1st and 2nd degree assault. The residents who were attacked in the home invasion both suffered injuries. AVILA BEACH, Cali. – The ocean has healing powers and for some former soldiers, it can help wash away the ugliness of war. U.S. veteran Ash Legion had a hard time transitioning to life outside the military. “For a long time, it was just a race to get blacked out,” said the former Marine Corps. Sgt.Now with the help of Operation Surf, a surf camp designed to help veterans, Legion has been able to step out of the darkness by stepping into the water. “I’m in a good place. Everybody is having a good time. Party wave!” said Legion. “It’s given me so much than I could have imagined. Honestly when I moved here, I had a wetsuit and I had no one to surf with. I had no friends. I didn’t know anybody here and then I met Dan.Dan Szentesi, lead surf instructor for Operation Surf, has spent the past seven years teaching veterans how to ride waves. “I don’t want to sound cliché, but a lot of people talk about how it saves their life,” said Szentesi.Operation Surf is now in its 10th year – and is growing, going from a weekend event once a year to now operating nearly year-round in northern, central and southern California.“Watching people catch their first wave is pretty amazing. It’s like a light goes off and people tend to feel like it’s something that they haven’t experienced before…something they’ve been missing,” said Szentesi. After finding surfing, these veterans say they can’t imagine life without it. “It’s made a big difference. I found my solace again,” said Ron Holtgrew, who was a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps.Once a week, Holtgrew drives two hours from Fresno to the central coast to get in the ocean. “I was one of those vets who didn’t think that I needed this program. I went through it and once I figured out what they were trying to do here with the healing powers of the ocean. I don’t stop coming,” said Holtgrew. The healing powers can help rinse away pain and PTSD. “It’s pretty damn close to a gun fight,” said Jordan Meyers, a U.S. veteran. “Just sheer adrenaline but you come out smiling instead of coming out kind of messed up in the head.”Operation Surf’s funding comes completely from donations and grants – investments in the sport and the soul. “As a spouse of a veteran myself, I started witnessing my husband come home, he smiled a little bit more, he laughed, he was telling me who he was surfing with how he got that epic left,” said Mackenzie Rana with Operation Surf.And finally feeling right by helping these vets transition from soldiers to civilians – and now surfers. “It’s so healing on so many levels, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, this is the healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever lives.” 2656
