An online predator who WPIX first exposed six months ago is still prowling the internet, targeting middle aged women.WPIX was contacted last month by his latest victim. She is too frightened to reveal her identity but she wants to tell her story as a warning to others.She met him a few months ago on Tagged, one of many dating sites that are free to join. He told her his name was Kevin Brown. He also calls himself "Big Daddy."Those are the same names he used in January, when WPIX first reported about his scam, sometimes called catfishing. In that incident, he used the dating site POF (Plenty of Fish) and scammed the woman out of more than 0.As reported then, WPIX learned the man is a career criminal. His real name is Kevin Beamon. He’s served 21 years in prison for attempted kidnapping, robbery, and grand larceny.Released just three years ago, he now scams trusting women on dating sites, gaining their trust, then asking for money.With this latest victim, after seeing her profile on Tagged, he reached out, said he liked her picture and began romancing her with frequent texts and phone calls and posting pictures of himself with his mother, friends, and his dog.“He seemed sincere. He seemed honest. He’s very good at what he does and I’m too trusting," she said.He told her he was an NYPD officer and asked her to come with him on a boat trip with some of his fellow cop friends. She said yes, but was surprised when he then told her he was short on cash and asked her to wire him 0 for her ticket. She did.Soon he asked for 5 to buy her ticket to see "Pretty Woman" on Broadway for his upcoming birthday. It was only when he requested 0 to help buy food for adult daughter, that she began to get suspicious.“I said I don’t have it and he said he’d have to find some other way and he abruptly hung up on me,” she said.Still, she agreed to meet him at what he said was his condo in Jersey City the day of the supposed boat ride. She says the place seemed as if no one was living there.He then told her it was his friend’s place, then said it belonged to his sister. When she asked about the dog picture online, her told her there was no dog and he didn’t have any details about the boat tripShe suspected something was wrong,“I said 'this is a farce. You’re lying. I want my money back.' He said 'I don’t have your money.' I said 'well I gotta go.'”She says when she stood up from the dining room table and began to walk toward the door, “I had on a denim shirt and he grabbed the sleeve and started to pull on my arm. I started to scream ‘let me go, let me go’, but he wouldn’t let go.“She grabbed a bottle of Windex on the kitchen counter and sprayed it in his eyes."He loosened his grip and I was able to get away.”She ran out the door, jumped in her car, and drove around the block, where the stopped and called the Jersey City Police Department.Two officers arrived and questioned each of them separately. Apparently, Beamon told them that they were outside and she had never been inside the condo. She says she could have proven that’s a lie by describing the inside of the apartment, but the police never asked.He also said Beamon reeked of Windex, another indication she was telling the truth.She says the male police officer told her to cut her losses since she hadn’t lost that much money and suggested she drop the whole thing. His female partner told her this was a bad part of New Jersey and she should leave and never come back again.“I wanted them to take him into the precinct for questioning, “ she says, but that didn’t happen. When she got home, still shaking from fright, she posted Beamon’s picture on another internet dating site as a warning. Someone told her they’d seen the guy on WPIX.She found our report online and says she felt embarrassed and ashamed she too had fallen for his scam. But she also feels relieved.“I didn’t know if I was going to die," she said. As COVID-19 first started to spread in the U.S., hospitals around the country were forced to stop elective surgeries. Now, hospital officials say they're facing perhaps the biggest financial crisis in their history."We've had to curtail regular operations, some of which involve these non-emergent procedures that you mention, and as a result from March to June, we saw a loss of revenue of 0 billion or billion a month," said American Hospital Association President Rick Pollack.Hospitals have also taken on major expenses when it comes to preparing and caring for COVID-19 patients. Plus, many patients they treat don't have insurance.Pollack says hospitals collectively are one of the largest employers in the country, employing more than 5 million people."Half of hospitals' budgets, over half, is devoted to labor costs. So, of course, when all regular operations are shut down and you’re incurring additional expenses to prepare for treating the virus for the community, you have to find ways to cut costs," explained Pollack.Some hospitals have resorted to laying off or furloughing staff."So, it's the last choice,” Pollack said. “It's a bad choice and we try to avoid it, but sometimes, it's inevitable to just stay afloat.”"Whether the disruptions in the health industry remain temporary or permanent is an interesting case because it affects everyone," said Jack Strauss, the Miller Chair of Applied Economics at the University of Denver.Strauss is concerned about how the healthcare industry will recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially amid a possible second wave of infections."They make their money on elective surgery and those were not occurring, and so, they're not probably positioned to recover," said Strauss.While a number of states are allowing elective procedures again, the wait time for these patients may be detrimental."Whether it's the detection for a tumor or a scan of a part of a body for a diagnostic procedure, a replacement of a heart valve. So, when you talk about electives, they're really not all that discretionary and we’re really concerned in the period that we shut down all non-emergent procedures that there was a deferral of care,” said Pollack. “We do hear, anecdotally, that the people that are coming back are in a much sicker position because they didn’t get the care that they needed.”Pollack says in order for the healthcare industry to recover, they're going to need a lot of help from the federal government."There's no question, if we don't get the additional assistance it will put the financial viability of a lot of hospitals at risk, particularly in rural areas and vulnerable urban areas," said Pollack.As possibly the biggest industry in the country that's been on the front lines of treating COVID-19, hospitals hope they're one of the first to get major federal help so that the healthcare industry can survive this pandemic. 2909

Apple announced on Friday that it is planning to temporarily close several of its locations in four states as the number of coronavirus cases in some US states are surging.Apple said that two stores in Florida, two in North Carolina, one in South Carolina and six in Arizona will be closed until further notice. An F-16 fighter jet intercepted a plane that was flying in a restricted area during President Trump's rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, Wednesday afternoon.North American Aerospace Defense Command officials say the plane was intercepted around 2 p.m. after officials noticed it had entered the Temporary Flight Restriction area surrounding Bullhead City.Officials say the violating aircraft did not respond to initial intercept procedures, but established radio communications after NORAD aircraft deployed signal flares.Authorities say the aircraft was escorted out of the restricted area by the F-16 without further incident. 634

Anyone using public transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic should not just wear a mask while in transit, but they should also leave their mask on while waiting at bus stops, train stations and other hubs, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance issued on Monday.In guidance published on the CDC website on Monday, the agency "strongly recommended" anyone using public transportation to wear masks during their rides, while waiting at transportation hubs and while boarding planes, trains and buses. The agency also said that all public transportation workers should also wear masks.Not only did the CDC recommend all passengers be required to wear masks, the agency also said that transit workers "should refuse to board anyone not wearing a mask" and require all passengers "to wear masks for the duration of travel." The only time a passenger should remove their mask is to eat, drink, take medication, or identify oneself to a security agent.Transit workers should also be provided with spare masks so they can give them out to riders who are not in compliance, the CDC added.Not covered in the guidance were children under the age of two, those instructed by medical professionals to not wear a mask for health reasons, those with disabilities or mental health conditions who find wearing masks to be difficult, the deaf and hard of hearing or transit workers whose jobs and the safety of others would be jeopardized by wearing a mask.The CDC recommends that all Americans wear masks in situations where keeping six feet distance from others is difficult.
