COPPER CENTER, Alaska – A hunter was killed by a grizzly bear in a national park in Alaska.The National Park Service (NPS) says it happened Sunday at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the southeastern part of the state.According to NPS, the hunter was on a 10-day moose hunt with a friend when the bear attacked near the Chisana River drainage.Specific injuries in the attack have not been disclosed, but it appears nobody else was harmed during the incident.Officials say this is the first known bear mauling fatality recorded at the park since it was established in 1980.“Visitors are encouraged to be Bear Aware when traveling in the backcountry and take precautions such as carrying bear spray and using Bear Resistant Food Containers (BRFC),” wrote NPS in a statement. “The park also encourages hunters to read Bear Safety for Hunters located on the ADF&G website.”The identity of the deceased hunter is being withheld pending investigation, NPS says. 979

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A 50-year-old woman stabbed a victim in the face with a grill fork so hard it became embedded, according to court documents.Shawn Jones is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face a felonious assault charge. The incident happened Saturday at Jones’ home near Cincinnati, according to Colerain Township police officer Kyle Frandoni.The fork tines were approximately 2 inches long, Frandoni wrote in his affidavit.Jones was arrested Sunday and is being held at the Justice Center. 555

Conditions on a breeder's property during an animal rescue operation near Nashville were so toxic that the leader of the rescue team nearly died from ammonia poisoning.Scotlund Haisley, the founder of Animal Rescue Corps, led a team along with sheriff's deputies to the home of a breeder. It was called Operation Noah's Ark.They rescued 150 animals from horrible conditions - conditions that were so bad, Haisley was poisoned by fumes and needed a blood transfusion to survive.Haisley wasn't feeling well, but he was still up and around two days later giving a tour of the shelter."This is what it takes to care for 150 animals. All of these volunteers," said Haisley pointing to his team.Moments later, he became violently sick.ARC has made hundreds of rescues over the years, almost all of them are in deplorable conditions.Yet, this one was in many ways the worst and most dangerous. Inside the structures, Haisley found an unbelievable amount of feces and urine, which produced the highest ammonia levels he'd ever encountered. He still went in."The animals were in there. They were suffering greatly. We had to get them out," said Haisley.Free from that toxic environment, the animals immediately began getting better, but Haisley got worse."Extreme nausea, couldn't hold food or beverages down and very exhausted," Haisley said describing his symptoms.Haisley talked to us later by phone after his release from the hospital for what turned out to be acute ammonia poisoning which required a massive blood transfusion. Doctors told him he nearly died."I've experienced ammonia before. This is a whole new experience for me," said Haisley.However, it won't change his mission. The experience made Haisley even more determined to rescue animals.He now knows, more than ever, that no living creature should ever live in such conditions.Experts say the toxic fumes found at some deplorable sites where animals are rescued can be comparable with those found at a meth lab.Haisley says crews often will wear oxygen masks, but now for extreme cases, they are looking to buy some protective full-body suits. 2187

COOK COUNTY, Illinois (AP) — A Michigan woman has been charged with murder in the deaths of her newborn twin sons more than 17 years after their bodies were found near Chicago.Authorities said Saturday that 41-year-old Antoinette Briley of Holland, Michigan, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her sons.The boys’ bodies were discovered on June 6, 2003, by a waste management employee who was emptying trash bins in Cook County, Illinois. Officers say the worker spotted the bodies in the front lift bucket.“A subsequent autopsy determined the victims were born alive and died of asphyxiation and the deaths were ruled homicides,” said Leo Schmitz, Chief of Public Safety at the Cook County Sheriff's Office, during a press conference.Using DNA technology, detectives eventually identified Briley as the victims’ potential birth mother.As part of their investigation, Schmitz says detectives traveled to Michigan and “obtained discarded items with Briley’s DNA,” which was then matched to the DNA of the newborn victims.On Thursday, officers say they learned Briley was in the Cook County area and took her into custody after a traffic stop in Oaklawn, Illinois. Containers of fruits being sold at Walmart in nine states were recalled due to a listeria risk.On Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration posted on its website that Country Fresh expanded its voluntary recall, which they issued on Friday, to include various containers of Freshness Guaranteed-brand cut or sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples, and cantaloupe distributed by Walmart.In a recall notice published on the FDA's website, Country Fresh said the FDA's voluntary recall came after a recent inspection."The recall is a precautionary measure due to possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes detected on equipment used in an area near where these products are packed," Country Fresh said in the recall notice.According to the notice, the product is currently sold at select Walmart stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.Walmart stores removed removing the recalled product from shelves and inventories immediately.
