SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Air & Space Museum will hold an induction ceremony for its Air & Space Hall of Fame 2019 class Saturday, which includes Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.In addition to Bezos, the 2019 class includes former Lockheed Martin Corporation Chairman Vance Coffman, MedAire founder Joan Sullivan Garrett, Apollo 12 command module pilot Dick Gordon, D-Day Pathfinder pilot Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to approve million in aid for businesses affected by San Diego County's slide into the most-restrictive purple tier of the state's four-tiered coronavirus monitoring system.Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher, co-chairs of the County of San Diego's COVID-19 Subcommittee, proposed making million in general funds available to provide relief to businesses negatively impacted by the indoor closures mandated by the purple tier."Due to the massive spike in COVID-19 cases and very concerning increases in hospitalizations we have to take action to slow the spread in San Diego County," they said in a joint statement. "Through no fault of their own, COVID-19 highest risk entities have to stop indoor operations. While we know this step is vital to help slow the spread in our community, we want to step up and help those impacted..."Our goal for the million is to provide relief to restaurants, gyms and other entities that have been directly impacted by the indoor closures due to our county's purple tier status. We want to provide this critical relief to them as our community works to slow the spread and stop the surge of COVID- 19 cases."Funds will also be available for event businesses, such as caterers and party planners.Cox, board chairman, said during Wednesday's virtual special meeting that providing the right critical relief for businesses is a priority."I realize we're in a situation none of us created," he said. "We want nothing more than for businesses to get back to normal, but this is one small step we can make to help them hang on."Supervisor Jim Desmond, described the funds a much-needed bandage for struggling businesses, but not a solution. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego's Board of Port Commissioners announced its approval Thursday of a 15-year extension for the San Diego Symphony Association's lease at Embarcadero Marina Park South. The lease, approved Wednesday, includes three 10-year options and one five-year option, allowing the association to lease the park for up to 50 years. The association currently uses the park land for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series, which it started in 2004. The concert series is held on a temporary stage that is assembled and disassembled each year. Later this year, the association hopes to break ground on the Bayside Performance Park project that would include construction of an open-air performance venue with seating for 10,000 as well as various improvements to park features like benches and basketball courts. The new venue also would serve as the permanent location for Bayside Summer Nights. ``The San Diego Symphony is investing a minimum of million in improvements, including many public amenities and better performance facilities, creating a new, year-round attraction on the San Diego Bay waterfront,'' Board Chairman Garry Bonelli said. ``We're confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved part.'' The stage will be designed by London-based company Soundforms, according to the association. The stage will be feature an acoustically engineered shell made of tensile white fabric and will complement the look of the nearby San Diego Convention Center. The venue will remain open to the public year-round as part of Marina Park South. ``I want to recognize the incredible partnership that has existed over the past four-and-a-half years between the Port of San Diego, the California Coastal Commission and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra,'' San Diego Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer said. ``The work we have accomplished together to create and activate a public performance park will be transformative and have lasting impact to San Diego residents and visitors.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Gulls will conduct Military Weekend at their games Friday and Saturday at Valley View Casino Center, including providing free tickets to more than 4,000 military members and their families.Military families will unfurl an American flag on the ice before the playing of the national anthem preceding Friday's American Hockey League game against the Stockton Heat.Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Colin M. Cooper and Marine Corps Master Sgt. Eric W. Franklin will be honored as the Military Heroes of the Game.All fans in attendance will receive a free Gulls camouflage hat.Fans can take free military-themed photos in the interactive photo booth on the north concourse, near Section 6, and post them online for a chance to be featured on the arena's video screen during Friday and Saturday's games.Military vehicles will be on display during Saturday's pregame tailgate party, which will be held from 5-7 p.m.Service members and their families can skate with Gulls players following Saturday's game against the Ontario Reign. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 today to request guidance from the state on allowing resumption of several activities, including private planned events, wedding receptions, hotel conferences, street fairs and team competitions.In a letter to be sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the county will also seek guidance on reopening playgrounds.Supervisor Jim Desmond made the proposal after the board was updated on the county's efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.Any reopening of those industries, he and other board members said, would only happen with the blessing of Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.He added that while the county must take note of an uptick in community outbreaks, it ``can't have a blanket stop on the economy.''``Maybe, by the time Newsom responds, there will be more time to review this. I want to be prepared with this next group of businesses,'' Desmond said.Because it takes months to plan certain events, such as weddings, planners ``will lose this entire season otherwise,'' Desmond said. ``We have one (board) meeting scheduled for July, and I'm trying to be ready if the numbers look good.''The supervisors also heard from numerous people employed in the private events industry, who urged the board to let them resume. Many said they have safety protocols in place, and would be able to provide lists for contact tracing if necessary.Wooten told the board that as of now, ``we couldn't recommend any opening in the next week or next couple of weeks, in terms of opening up broad industries, if (community) outbreaks continue.''``If we're above seven community outbreaks, it would be ill-fated'' to make such recommendations, she said.Another three community outbreaks were reported Monday by county health officials, raising the number reported in the last week to 10 -- the most in any week's span since the pandemic began in early March.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher cast the dissenting vote on the motion. The county ``has hit the community outbreak `trigger' for six consecutive days and recent days have generated not only the highest reporting of new COVID cases but also a doubling of the percentage of total tests being positive,'' Fletcher said after the vote. ``Given these facts, it is reckless and irresponsible to propose expedited reopening of additional in-door close contact group gatherings without any restrictions on the number of attendees.'' 2460
