SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A virtual job fair for Camp Pendleton Marines, their spouses, veterans, and members of the reserve and guard is set for Thursday.Organizer RecruitMilitary says more than 35 employers will attend, and more than 400 job seekers have already signed up. The jobs run the gamut from full to part-time, telecommuting, and include local and national employers. The City of Carlsbad and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department will be there recruiting. Other employers include Northrop Grumman, ADT, Spectrum and Eli Lilly. "We have employers that have made the transition themselves," said Jennifer Hadac, a Navy veteran organizing the fair for RecruitMilitary. "A lot of them are veterans themselves or military spouses or members of the military community, so they understand the challenges that they face, they speak the lingo, so it kind of bridges the gap for them."The nationwide Veteran unemployment rate is now at a seasonally adjusted 8 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. It peaked at 11.8 percent in April. But in December 2019, it was as low as 2.8 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman died after crashing into a tree in Mira Mesa Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the woman was driving north on I-15 when she veered off the road, striking a tree and a light pole near Carroll Canyon Road around 1:18 a.m. The woman died at the scene, according to CHP. The agency says a man was riding in the passenger seat at the time of the crash. He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. At this time, it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol may been involved. 524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested by Border Patrol agents after they reportedly discovered drugs hidden inside her child’s car seat and stroller.Agents say they stopped a 2015 Nissan Sentra at an unspecified location along Interstate 15 on June 12 around 6:15 p.m. The vehicle was driven by a 26-year-old male US citizen. Two women and three minor children were also in the vehicle. After searching the vehicle using a K-9, agents found several packages of drugs wrapped in cellophane and hidden inside one of the children’s car seat and stroller. Border Patrol says a child was sitting in the car seat when the drugs were found. The 23 packages contained methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin valued at 1,680, the agency says. Agents later discovered that the drugs were hidden by one of the female passengers, a 26-year-old US citizen. The woman was arrested and turned over to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office while the three minor children were released into the custody of their 32-year-old aunt. 1023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A semi-truck carrying boxes of grapes caught fire as it traveled down Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday morning.Authorities received reports of a semi-truck on fire on westbound I-8 just near dunbar lane shortly after 12:30 a.m.Firefighters arrived to put the fire out and attempted to save the shipments of grapes, but it was a total lost.California Highway Patrol officials said the truck’s driver escaped unharmed.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An elderly woman died while she was with her family waiting to cross the border into San Diego Sunday afternoon, according to our reporting partner Televisa.Televisa reported it is unknown why the woman, who was in her late 80s, passed away.This comes as people on both sides of the border expressed frustration at incredibly long wait times."It's unfortunate because I think the policies that CBP puts in place, protocols, punish border crossers," Pedro Rios said. He said it took four hours to cross in Otay Mesa on Saturday.New protocols went into effect on Friday due to the pandemic. Customs and Border Protection planned on slowing down traffic, closing lanes and adding secondary inspections, aimed at delaying those traveling for non-essential reasons.In addition to San Diego, Tucson, Arizona, El Paso, and Laredo Texas have similar protocols in place.One woman waiting to cross into San Ysidro told Televisa, "Yes it is difficult, but no one wants to be here in Tijuana."Another woman said they were heading to the U.S. to visit friends and go to the beach. When Televisa asked if they thought that was essential travel, they replied in Spanish, "Yes, because we're tired and angry. If you're following the regulations, staying away from people, have your mask and disinfectant ... if you're following the protocol, you can."The restrictions on non-essential travel do not apply to anyone crossing the border for work, school, or medical treatment.The restrictions are set to continue through September 21.ABC 10News reached out to CBP for comment and will update this story when they respond. 1630
