MUSKEGON, Mich. - Organizing school supplies such as crayons, notebooks, and folders then packing them into backpacks is a labor of love for Muskegon sisters Payton and Madelyn Chittenden.“If you see something wrong, you should at least try to fix it,” said Payton.The sisters are working to make a difference for students this school year.“We donate school supplies to kids that… can’t afford it,” said Madelyn.In July, FOX17 introduced the sisters and their mission to collect school supplies for their classmates with families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.They figured they would be able to pack a few dozen backpacks, but as the donations picked up so did the project’s impact.“It’s just making those kids smile and not worry about the coronavirus,” said Melissa Chittenden, mom.Melissa says monetary and supply donations have added to over ,000, which is enough to create more than 950 backpacks for kindergarten through fourth-grade students at Reeths Puffer Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Holton Public Schools, and Fruitport Community Schools.That’s 15 to 25 kits per grade at each district’s elementary schools.“It means so much to me as a parent that this is what my kids are focusing on during a time with the corona, they’re not really worried about catching the germs, they’re worried about what can we do to make this a better place?” said Melissa.Teachers will distribute the kits to their students once classes start.Payton and Madelyn believe it could connect students during a year in which not much can be shared and teach them all a lesson of love.“It doesn’t matter if you’re helping a little or a lot, you’re still changing the world,” said Madelyn.“It will help them learn and they will know that they’re special and someone cares about them,” said Payton.Marisa Oberle from WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan first reported this story. 1876

(KGTV) — Marine Corps Air Station Miramar held an annual mass casualty drill Tuesday ahead of this year's Miramar Air Show.The scenario, centered around an F-35 crashing off the end of the runway into the crowd, included about 20 people playing the part of the injured, complete with fake blood and shrapnel wounds."Getting everybody together is very crucial because one fire department, or one hospital, or one ambulance company cannot handle a large scale incident with a lot of patients," MCAS Miramar Fire Captain Paul Jacobs said.WHAT TO KNOW: MCAS Miramar Air Show 2019The importance is paramount as accidents have happened in the past. More transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed this year than any other year prior since data has been tracked.According to the Human Rights Campaign, which has been tracking the deaths since 2013, at least 33 trans or gender non-conforming people have been killed in the United States in 2020.“There’s a loud minority of folks who feel it is their place to punish people who have different beliefs than they do,” said Tori Cooper, a transgender woman herself who works with the HRC. “It is difficult to sometimes articulate how each death feels, like a little part of your spirit is being taken away.”Cooper says as LGBTQ issues get more exposure, more risk is taken on by the community. She also says each year the reporting gets more accurate, which could be why the trend has gone the way it has.“There [are] so many things that you find in common; so many commonalities with these people who have been murdered that it feels each time a little closer to home,” said Cooper.For Cooper, that feeling was never more pronounced than after 33-year old Felycya Harris, another trans woman, was killed on October 8 by a man she was in a romantic relationship with. Both live in Georgia, and both can identify with the fact that most of these deaths have come at the hands of those closest to the victim.“When someone says something under their breath you have to think to yourself is this person going to kill me,” said Cooper. “That may sound, to folks outside the community, hyperbolic, but the truth is it isn’t.”Cooper says the way forward is in education, empathy, and working through any discomfort about transgender issues that may be different than our own.“If folks who in our same social circles are killing us, then if we can’t trust people who we know then who is it that we can trust,” said Cooper.She says only then can we work towards reversing a trend that has Cooper and others apprehensive about something inherent to all of us: connection.“Provide folks with the love, support, and encouragement that we, as trans people, need because that provides a modicum of safety,” she said. 2124

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church looks to move forward as the investigation continues into what caused the church to catch fire.On Sunday, their temporary place of worship was right across the street from the church right in the Milwaukee Area Technical College auditorium. Months after removing all assault rifles from all 732 of its stores, Dick's Sporting Goods is considering removing all hunting gear from its stores, company CEO Edward Stack said in a conference call, according to CBS News. Stack said on the call that Dick's will test the concept at 10 locations. The 10 locations selected were ones where hunting goods were not selling well. "We'll have to wait and see how the 10-store test does," Stack said on the call. CBS reported that Stack added that there are a number of additional locations where selling hunting goods are difficult. The additional space could be used for Dick's to sell higher-margin items, such as outerwear and clothing for team sports, especially baseball and soccer. CBS reported that Dick's adjusted same-store sales were down 3.9 percent in the third quarter of 2018 compared to 2017. Following Wednesday's announcement, stocks for Dick's rose 2.4 percent, showing that investors welcomed the news.  1026
