SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick.The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido.The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans gathered at Balboa Park to honor the 22 lives lost in the El Paso shooting. A group of San Diegans organized the event held at the park next to Centro Cultural de la Raza, hoping to unite the city and advocate change."It hurts, it's going to take a while, we're not going to forget," Pat Palma said. She has friends and family in Texas and feared for their safety when the shots rang out August 3rd."Tried to locate everybody, it was hard, I finally did. Sunday I was just numb," she said."That person did not go to Walmart asking if you're a Democrat or a Republican or a Trump supporter or not. He went there to shoot brown people," Organizer Jessica Yanez Perez said.The victims range in age from 82-2-years-old.At the vigil, they held a prayer asking for support for the families experiencing grief, lit candles for those lost and had speakers who preached involvement to create change."This is something that touched close to home for a lot of us," Yanez Perez said El Paso and San Diego are the same city. She explained both cities are made up of the same people, "people of Mexican ethnicity, of immigrants, of people who cross the border to work."The organizers hope the crowd touched by the senseless killing can show unity, through more than the color of their skin, "what happens here, what can we do here, to prevent something like that and I think the biggest thing is coming together as a community reminding each other we are one we are San Diego." 1522

San Diego (KGTV)- Tenants in Oak Park say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. Some have seen two increases this year, and they're already living on a fixed income. Tenants held a rally Thursday morning and are pushing for a rent control bill to be signed into law. Assembly bill 1482 would put a cap on rent for tenants in apartments and single-family homes. "My sense of security is pretty much gone," says Sara McTimmonds. "We don't know if we're going to be in or out." McTimmonds has been living at the Olive Wood Gardens Apartment complex for 12 years. It's a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. McTimmonds says she's already had her rent increased twice. "In February, and then in July my rent was going to go up from 550 to 900."Renters are hoping for rent protection. Assembly Bill 1482 would do just that. The bill would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than 7 percent in one year. Not everyone is in favor of the bill. The California Apartment Association and the California Association of Realtors say they state underbuilt housing for so many years, and that's why rent is so high. "The five percent, plus the CPI may be enough if you don't have significant operational costs if you don't need a new roof, but that's not a certainty," says Molly Kirkland with the Southern California Rental Housing Association. The Senate Appropriations Committee will hear Assembly Bill 1482 Friday and decide whether or not to move it out of suspense file status for the rest of 2019. They could kill the bill if they think it will cost the state too much. 1653

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two San Diego families were devastated when their dogs disappeared. After days of searching, they found out their dogs were adopted by other families at local shelters. “I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “It’s been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word Cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted. A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted. “We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila. The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods of four days for animals with no identification. Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point. That’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society. Both shelters told 10News they notified the adopters but the new families have decided to not return the animals.
