[Agencies]Forty-four percent of the 2,000 people polled, all of whom have an annual income of more than 60,000 yuan (,000), said they were planning to visit the region over the festive period.Other popular destinations included Shanghai (10 percent), Sanya in Hainan Province (9 percent), Lijiang in Yunnan Province, Bali in Indonesia, Phuket in Thailand and Harbin in Heilongjiang Province.Conducted by the online travel firm ctrip.com, the survey found people were most interested in places with a "strong holiday atmosphere", "good shopping environment" and "excellent hotels and beaches" when choosing a destination for their Christmas getaway.Tang Yibo, director of Ctrip.com's holiday department, said: "Embodying both Eastern and Western cultures, Hong Kong stands out because it has not only a vibrant Christmas atmosphere, but also offers lots of shopping and entertainment facilities, and big discounts at this time of year."The convenience of traveling between the mainland and Hong Kong is also an important factor, Tang said.Lin Nan, a teacher from Shanghai, who sets off on a three-day trip to Hong Kong this weekend, said: "The pre-Christmas discounts in Hong Kong are irresistible, even when you consider what you have to pay to fly there."Lin Kang, deputy general manager of the outbound tourism department of the China International Travel Service Head Office, said tour packages to Hong Kong are always bestsellers at Christmas.He said the reason was that Chinese do not have much time off work at Christmas and the New Year so they cannot travel too far."When it comes to the weeklong Spring Festival holiday, destinations like Europe will be more popular," he said.Packages for the Spring Festival are now available, he said, with some of them to Australia and New Zealand already sold out.Some travel experts have said the high volume of holiday bookings for this year's Spring Festival is due to the cancellation of the May Day holiday.But Lin disagreed, saying it is still too early to judge the impact of the changes to the national holiday schedule. China's consumer price index is expected to rise about 3.3 percent in 2007, moving above the government target of three percent, the State Information Centre said on Wednesday. The forecast came after China's consumer price index (CPI) hit a 27-month-high of 3.4 percent in May, driven by an 8.3 percent rise in food prices, from 3.0 percent in April and 3.3 percent in March. "Consumer inflation in 2007 is to be pushed up by food price increases, and food price increases are the result of a surge in meat, poultry and egg prices," the think-tank said in a report published on the China Securities Journal. The centre is a research body under the China National Development and Reform Commission, China's top planning agency. The report said the rise in meat and other foods would not slow considerably until the last quarter of this year because of high grain and cereal prices. But it did not provide any forecast on policy moves. A surge last month in the price of pork, a staple meat on Chinese dinner tables, raised concerns about inflation. After the May inflation data was released last week, Premier Wen Jiabao said the government was prepared to tighten policy further to restrain the economy and inflation. Various ministries also scrambled to respond in an effort to ease public worries about inflation. The Ministry of Commerce said pork prices in major Chinese cities had dropped slightly in the first 10 days of June. But according to the report, meat and egg prices could rise even further in coming weeks, following a 26.5 percent surge in meat prices in May. Besides food, inflation pressures are under control, the report said. Prices of industrial products are unlikely to rise significantly, and labour cost increases in China have yet to be reflected in consumer inflation. It said the pace of inflation in 2007, although it is exceeding Beijing's target, is still within a range the government can control. Monetary tightening and yuan appreciation in China are expected to have some cooling effects on inflation.

BEIJING -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) has planned to open a subsidiary in the United States, as part of its going-global strategy which also involves Russia, Indonesia and the Middle East, Board Chairman Jiang Jianqing said here on Wednesday."Preparations have been going on smoothly. We hope to receive approval from American authorities as early as possible," said Jiang, a delegate to the ongoing 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, at a news briefing.Jiang said that next month the ICBC would open a branch in Russia and take over the Bank Halim in Indonesia. Applications to set up new branches in Dubai and Doha have been approved by the banking authorities of China, paving the way for its march into the emerging Middle East market.In its latest overseas expansion, the ICBC clinched an agreement with Seng Heng Bank Limited on August 29 to acquire a stake of nearly 80 percent of the bank in Macao for 4.683 billion patacas (US5 million), according to the bank's website.Jiang said that the ICBC would "cautiously" advance its going- global strategy. "Only when the price, opportunity and place are right will we make a move."The bank has established more than 100 branches so far in 13 countries and regions, mainly through greenfield investment, merger and acquisition. But overseas business only contributed three percent of its total assets and four percent of its profits. The ICBC hopes to raise the proportion to 10 percent in the future, Jiang said.Domestically, the ICBC has more than 16,800 outlets.With a total asset of over US0 billion, the ICBC has been named as the second largest bank of Asia and the most profitable bank with a net profit of over US billion, according to a listing of HK Asia Week of "Top 300 Asia Bank".Apart from expanding its global presence, the bank has been engaged in financial innovations at home. China has delivered the first shipment of 50,000 tons of heavy oil aid it had pledged to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the rest is being sourced, said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu on Tuesday.The first shipment of heavy fuel oil from China arrived in the Nampo port of DPRK on September 16, said Jiang at a regular press conference.The DPRK, under a joint document issued at the six-party talks on February 13, should declare all nuclear programs and disable all existing nuclear facilities in exchange for a total of 1 million tons of heavy fuel oil or equivalent aid, with the initial shipment of 50,000 tons.The Republic of Korea (ROK) delivered 6,200 tons on July 15, sooner after which the DPRK announced its shutdown of the Yongbyon reactor, a widely regarded substantial step, after a 10-member team of U.N. inspectors arrived in the capital Pyongyang to verify and monitor the reactor sealing.Top negotiators to the six party talks from host China, the DPRK, United States, the ROK, Russia and Japan, agreed in July to provide the DPRK with economic, energy and humanitarian assistance up to the equivalent of 950,000 tons of heavy fuel oil.Envoys also agreed to meet here in early September to compile a road map for implementing the second phase of DPRK's denuclearization process which is to declare all of its nuclear programs and disable all of its existing nuclear facilities."We consider it necessary for the six parties to reconvene at a proper time. Date for next-phase nuclear talks should be decided by all parties concerned," Jiang said."China is consulting with the relevant parties on the dates for the next phase of six party talks," Jiang added.The DPRK Vice Foreign Minister in charge of Chinese and Asian affairs Kim Yong Il reportedly arrived in Beijing on Tuesday morning.In response to a request to confirm the DPRK vice foreign minister's China visit, Jiang said Kim's visit was "according to exchange plans between Chinese and the DPRK foreign ministries".Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi and his deputy Wu Dawei will meet him. Beside Beijing Kim will also visit other Chinese cities, Jiang said.

SHANGHAI: Preliminary investigations showed improper maintenance work had caused a Shanghai gas station explosion on Saturday, which saw four killed and 40 injured.A team of officials from related government agencies is investigating the blast at the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) outlet in Pudong District, reported the Xinmin Evening News Sunday.The station had earlier been suspended on October 11 for safety concerns and was scheduled for reopening Sunday.CNPC did not respond to media queries on the explosion.Most of those injured from the incident have been discharged from hospital.Two of the 29 blast victims sent to Punan Hospital died while 26 were discharged Sunday morning.A 49-year-old woman who was hit on the head by a piece of blast debris is still under observation at the hospital.She was said to have been in her apartment close to the station when the explosion shattered her window.The 13 other injured who were sent for treatment at the Pudong branch of Renji Hospital have been discharged.The explosion on Saturday occurred at 7:50 am in the junction of South Yanggao and Pusan roads.Two maintenance workers on the site were killed instantly. Witnesses said one of the workers was blown five stories high before landing nearby.A woman who was cycling 1 km away from the station was hit by a piece of blast debris and died in hospital.A motorcyclist, later identified as Wang Dong from Anhui Province, also died after debris hit him on the head.He had taken off his helmet to answer a call on his mobile phone.The Shanghai Evening News said Sunday that visits to several gas stations in the area found unsafe practices.Drivers lining up for gas smoked and used mobile phones without being stopped by station employees.The blast also damaged a bus that had stopped near the station and injured passengers on board. A convenience store, motel and several other nearby buildings were also hit.Traffic disrupted by the explosion resumed Sunday.
