SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s elderly population, those 85 and older, is expected to soar by more than 400 percent by 2060, according to new data from the State of California. The data means many more Californians will be faced with helping their parents at the same time they’re trying to stash money away for retirement. 10News spoke with experts to take a look at ways to manage. As the population ages, more and more San Diegans will fall into the sandwich generation. RELATED: Here's where you can get a senior discount around San Diego“It’s those folks who are taking care of their parents and putting a kid thru college,” explains Yvonne Amrine, an estate planning and elder law attorney. Amrine understands. For a decade, she financially supported her mother’s care, which totaled half a million dollars. She says the bulk of the burden falls on families. “Mostly you'll be paying out of your own pocket. Nursing home fees are expected to reach more than 3,000 per year for a private room by 2035. Both Amrine and Linda Urbina with Golden Care have advice for the sandwich generation: Even if you’re simultaneously helping mom and dad, stay focused on a savings plan and look into your own long-term care options. “Be proactive, talk to a financial planner, the older you get the more they will cost you. Speak with a trust attorney.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting started with your financial planningAlso be sure you’ve signed the documents giving you the ability to advocate for your parents as their needs change. “It’s very important to sit down with your parents and talk about who has medical directive, and who has power of attorney.”In California, some of the costs of care are covered under Medi-Cal. So we're hoping that pace program will keep people at home.”And there are VA benefits for both veterans and their spouses. The combined benefit can total ,100 per month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Since they got the call for help a week ago, San Diego Border Dreamers has been working around the clock to set up an emergency medical clinic in Tijuana.Board Director Milad Torabi says he's getting word migrants have conditions including fevers, rashes, blisters and bad sunburns. On a Go Fund Me, they're raising money for basic medical, first aid, and sanitary supplies.The advocacy group is partnering with two UC San Diego organizations which specialize in this area: Flying Samaritans and the International Health Collective.They're accepting monetary donations as well as medical supplies.San Diego Border Dreamers is also seeking doctors, nurses, medical students, acupuncturists, physical therapists and medical translators willing to volunteer their time. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday a new curfew went into effect for San Diego businesses, in an attempt to slow the sky-rocketing coronavirus cases across the state.Saturday, the county announced 1,478 new coronavirus cases, the highest number in a single day we've seen. San Diego County's total is now 70,709 cases. Six more people have died from the virus, bringing the local death toll to 966.This alarming rise in cases urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to issue a limited stay-at-home order for counties in the purple tier, shutting all businesses down 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. until Dec. 21.That cuts restaurants down about an hour from the way they were operating prior, according to Mike Hess, founder of Mike Hess Brewing."It gets my crew home earlier, it's just another thing to deal with, it's a month maybe it's longer we'll see, we'll keep going," he said.He's not worried so much about the latest change."This has been the year of hits, I mean it's one after another," Hess said he's concerned about winter weather coming."Heaters are in shortage, you know covered space, you know that kind of thing, it's tough to shelter people on a sidewalk," he said.He's also worried about keeping cans in stock, "there's plenty of aluminum there's just a shortage of manufacturers making cans."He said he's thankful for his incredible team who is taking the punches with him."Everybody says pivot I think it's more than pivot, you have to be flexible," he said.Hess said he's thankful his doors are open and business is good, "production is up this year, we're putting everything in cans so that's been good, and our on-site locations have been doing pretty well this year."Hess longs to bring a sense of community back, "I long for those days when people can mingle and say hey!
