I asked him about the possibility of pursing Manny Machado on the free agent market."Machado, I think, is somebody that every team would like," Fowler said before adding the dreaded "but" to the sentence. But with little movement around baseball on free agents and trades -- and undoubtedly a high asking price by the Reds -- a deal never materialized. The Padres' hole at third remained, and there was Machado, still waiting for the right fit on the free agent market.Finally, don't discount general manager A.J. Preller's powers of persuasion. He was able to convince his bosses that the right guy for the Padres was available now and this was a one-time opportunity."You could wait for some of the young talent that we've built up and look at 3 or 4 years and hope the right guys are out there," Preller told reporters at Cactus League media day in Arizona, "but if pieces that fit for us both in the short-term and long-term are out there, that's how you build a club." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police agencies throughout San Diego County are investigating multiple brewery break-ins, all within the last week. Employees at Serpentine Cider say they were hit last Friday morning. Their surveillance cameras captured a man walking up to their business, moving a planter and then smashing a window to get inside. The person got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Just two miles away, Longship Brewery says they were hit that very same morning. The suspect, also broke a window and crawled inside, getting away with an empty cash drawer. In Vista, Barrel Harbor Brewing confirms with 10News someone also broke into their place the same exact way. They reported the crime to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. On social media, a fourth brewery, Black Plague, posted pictures of a break-in at their business on Instagram. Oceanside Police is investigating that incident. So far, police haven't confirmed if the incidents are related or released a description of who they're looking for. 1029

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly two dozen children were hurt over the weekend after a platform collapsed at a San Diego indoor parkour gym.One of the people hurt said her 10-year-old son was one of her rescuers.It was kid’s night out, so most parents dropped their kids off.
