CARLSBAD (KGTV) - In response to a four year construction project that recently kicked off, California Highway Patrol has lowered the speed limit on a stretch of interstate 5 by 10 miles per hour. The stretch is about eight miles long, through Encinitas and Carlsbad. The entire project will eventually go all the way to the 78. The project with add HOV lanes over the next four years. The new speed limit will help to protect workers in the area working closely to the passing vehicles. California Highway Patrol officer Mark Latulippe tells 10News, "the days of well we just put the signs up and we’re giving you a grace limit, are over". They've put up dozens of signs to warn people of the change, dropping the speed limit to 55 miles per hour. Despite the many signs drivers are ignoring the change and sticking to their normal speeds upwards of 70 miles per hour. The signs have been up for about a month but Latulippe says, "we are sending enforcement units out now to start that ticketing process of trying to slow this down". Drivers can now expect to get pulled over and ticketed from here on out. Because the area is a work zone, the tickets will be double the normal speeding fine. 1202

CARLSBAD (CNS) - A 47-year-old man suffered severe injuries when he lost control of his speeding car and struck a tree on a Carlsbad street, police said Tuesday.Dispatchers received a report of a solo vehicle crash shortly before 6:10 p.m. Monday in the 7100 block of Corintia Street, off Alga Road, Carlsbad police Lt. Christie Calderwood said.Officers responded and found the man -- a Carlsbad resident -- unconscious inside a Mercedes-Benz CLS 55 sedan, Calderwood said.A preliminary investigation found that the victim was speeding when he struck a curb, lost control of the sedan and crashed into the tree, the lieutenant said.Paramedics took the injured motorist to the hospital for treatment of "severe injuries," Calderwood said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Each Monday, a group of dedicated seniors gather in their woodshop, on a mission to make the holidays a little brighter for North County kids in need. The woodworking elves of the La Costa Glen senior living community in Carlsbad have spent nearly a year creating 100 handmade toys of all shapes and sizes.The toys have up to 39 pieces, crafted with various types of wood like walnut, cherry, and mahogany. RELATED: 10 special holiday events coming to San DiegoFive woodworkers spent the year making around 4,000 parts for the toys."It's all handmade, and a lot of love and care goes into putting it together," said Tom Woodbury, a member of the toymaking team. Countless hours have gone into the effort. Among the toys are a truck, grasshopper, and mouse. CHANDLER, Ariz. - A woman in the East Valley of Arizona was stung by bees more than 200 times and a few fellow runners just happened to be in the right place--and the right time--to help.Usually cooler weather keeps bees away, but with more trees and flowers in bloom after the recent rain, experts say the bees are sticking around."I was taking my dog out for a walk, it's a normal route," said Marisa Brazil.Her daily routine along Paseo Trail in Chandler took a terrifying turn Monday morning."She was starting to flail her arms and I kind of looked at my best friend, Julie, and said, 'she's either having a really good time or something's happening,'" Brazil said.It did not take long for both women to realize something terrible was happening to the runner ahead of them on the trail."She was really screaming, like loud," said Julie Sternberg. The trained lifeguard ran to help while Brazil called 911."I tried to run up the other side and then some bees came at me," Sternberg said.Sternberg was stung on her head as the bees forced her back. She then saw two other strangers battling their way forward."They kept retreating. So at that point once I figured out there was bees, I figured out that's why. I saw one guy kept moving back," said Sternberg. "She was still screaming the whole entire time, so it was pretty scary," said Brazil.First responders eventually took over. The woman who was stung posted to Facebook from her hospital bed, thanking the strangers who tried to help. The woman who was stung is expected to recover. Her family said she was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.Now Brazil is warning others to be on alert."Just letting people in my community know that there is something going on there," Brazil said.A technician at The BEEHIVE Bee and Wasp Removal in Gilbert said if you find yourself surrounded by a swarm, swatting is the worst thing to do because that only agitates the bees. He says the best thing to do in a similar situation is remain calm, cover your face and nose, and run as fast as you can away from the area. 2126
