BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visits to Russia and Tajikistan helped enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation and promote development, said Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi late Thursday.From Monday to Thursday, Wen paid official visits to Russia and Tajikistan. SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and leaders of other Group of 20 (G20) members gathered here Friday to address the challenges to the ongoing global economic recovery and work out strategies to achieve strong, sustainable and balanced global growth.President Hu, who participated in the G20 summits in Washington in 2008, in London and Pittsburgh in 2009, and in Toronto last June, is expected to expound China's stand on the major issues to be discussed at the fifth meeting in the South Korean capital, according to Chinese officials.At the Seoul summit, the leaders will discuss the world economic situation, the "Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced global growth," the reform of global financial institutions, the strengthening of financial regulations, a global financial safety net and development issues.Chinese President Hu Jintao attends the inauguration of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Seoul, capital of South Korea, Nov. 12, 2010."The G20 summit to be held in Seoul, South Korea, is the first one of its kind to be held in an emerging economy and in Asia, hence it is of great significance to the development of the G20 mechanism," President Hu said in a written interview with South Korean media last Tuesday.Hu said the Seoul summit should focus on the following issues:-- To continue to strengthen coordination of macro-economic policies using an "in-the-same-boat" spirit and mutually beneficial and win-win principles, and to send to the market positive signals that G20 members were unified in tackling the great challenges of the world economy so market confidence could rally and the momentum of the world economic recovery would be secured.-- To push forward the reforms of the international financial system, to strengthen supervision of the international financial market, and to increase the say and the representation of emerging and developing countries in international financial institutions.-- To push forward a solution to the unbalanced development between developed and developing countries and to provide political support to the realization of UN Millennium Development Goals.-- To oppose trade protectionism and to push forward the Doha Round of World Trade Organization talks to achieve comprehensive and balanced results and its development goals.The previous four G20 summits formulated measures to deal with the international financial crisis. The summits have played an important role in returning the world economy to growth, stabilizing international financial markets and ensuring the confidence of the public and business.When they met last June in Toronto, the G20 leaders agreed on the importance of safeguarding and strengthening the recovery while laying the foundation for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, and strengthening the financial systems.At the Seoul Summit, according to the host South Korea, the G20 will build on past agreements, while introducing new agenda items that support the same fundamental goals.The G20 was established in 1999 to bring together strategically important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.It includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union (EU).Together, G20 members represent around 90 percent of global gross national product, 80 percent of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world's population.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will continue working with Taiwan to expand and deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said Sunday.Commenting on mayoral elections in the island's five cities, which concluded Saturday, spokeswoman Fan Liqing said the mainland had "paid close attention" to the results.The mainland would steadily promote cross-Strait relations and improve the living standards of people on both sides, she said."We hope Taiwan society is stable and people live and work in peace," she said.Fan said that over the past two years, improved cross-Strait relations had brought tangible benefits to people on both sides, and the peaceful development of relations had become common ground.Of the five mayoral elections, the ruling Kuomintang won three while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party won two.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- China has sent three warships to escort a Chinese cargo ship that had been attacked earlier by pirates in the Arabian Sea near Oman, the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC) said Sunday.Twenty-one crew members, all Chinese nationals, have now been accounted for aboard the Taishankou.The center said the crew hid in a safety compartment when the pirates boarded the ship. It did not mention any injuries among crew members.The center received a call for help from the Taishankou at 4:40 p.m. (Beijing Time) Saturday. Chinese warships assigned to escort duties in the Gulf of Aden rendezvoused with the Taishankou at 8:44 a.m. Sunday.Additionally, the CMSRC advised vessels to pay more attention to safety since the area reported a recent increase in pirate attacks.This followed another Chinese ship, the Lecong, being attacked by pirates in the northern Indian Ocean Thursday. One of the 26 crew members aboard the Lecong was injured during a battle with the pirates.The Lecong is now sailing toward Oman under the escort of a Chinese warship, according to a report in Sunday's People's Liberation Army Daily.The injured crew member was reported to have suffered a wound and infection, though his medical condition was reported as stable.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang's three-nation visit to Europe has expressed China's confidence, boosted mutual trust, expanded cooperation and deepened mutual understanding, Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said Thursday.Li returned to Beijing on Thursday afternoon after making visits to Spain, Germany and Britain at the invitations of their governments.Fu said that the vice premier's visits took place as the deep-seated impact of the international financial crisis remains unabated, the global economic recovery still faces uncertainties, and as Europe is in a tough fight against sovereignty debt crises.The visits were a great success and have been a solid start for the development of China's relations with Europe in 2011, Fu said.ENHANCED MUTUAL UNDERSTANDINGAccording to the vice foreign minister, Li said during his visit that China is a strategic partner of the three nations, and shares with them extensive common interests. Calling China's development an opportunity for the European countries, Li also said their prosperity and stability means opportunity for China.China is willing to work in concert with the three nations to rise to the challenges and seek common development, Fu quoted Li as saying.When visiting Spain, Li said choosing Spain as the first leg of his tour was to convey China's confidence in the country and the European Union (EU) in their fight against the sovereignty debt crises.Li called Spain a good friend and partner of China, and expressed China's willingness to intensify their traditional friendship and cooperation, and express its confidence in Spain's ability to tide over the current economic difficulties.Recognizing Germany as China's important partner in the EU, Li hailed their close cooperation and their mutual respect of each other's core interests.He expressed the hope that the two sides will understand and settle each other's concerns with a positive attitude in the new situation so as to further deepen bilateral ties.During his stay in Britain, Li said, to enhance the stability of bilateral relations, the two countries should continue treating each other on an equal basis and respecting each other's path of development.The Chinese leader said he wishes for China to deepen cooperation with the three nations and the EU when combating crises, and to establish with them a partnership featuring future-orientation, equal treatment, mutual benefit and an all-win result, and sustainable development.He also hoped the countries could promote the EU to recognize China's full market economy status and lift arms embargo on China, Fu said.The three nations all see China's development as opportunities instead of threats. Considering China and the EU as two big economies and major forces in the world, they believe their enhanced cooperation will contribute to peace, prosperity and stability of the world, Fu said.They also expressed the desire to work with China to bring their ties with China as well as the EU-China relationship to new levels, Fu added.STRENGTHENED TRADE, ECONOMIC RELATIONSFu said that, during Li's visit, he saw new developments in energy exploration and scientific and technological innovation in the three nations, and signed with them cooperation deals in energy and resources, aviation, telecommunication, finance, machinery, and tourism.As China's economy and that of the EU are quite complementary, Li lauded the great potential for Europe's cutting edge in technology to combine with China's huge market.Li urged both sides to consolidate traditional cooperation, explore new cooperative areas, develop large projects and create new cooperation highlights. He also expected the two sides to boost the level of technological cooperation and jointly explore the third-party markets to bring mutual benefits and achieve a win-win result for all.Vowing to further improve the investment environment, the Chinese leader welcomed more European enterprises to invest in China. He also encouraged more Chinese investment in Europe.Li wished that the three countries could join hands with China to combat trade and investment protectionism, ease restrictions on high-tech exports to China and further facilitate Chinese businessmen's travels to Europe.According to Fu, Li also expounded on China's stances on the issues of the exchange rate of China's currency, government procurement, technology transfer, protection of intellectual property rights and rare earth export.
