Regular nonstop flights between the east coast of Australia and London or New York could soon become a reality.In preparation, Australian airline Qantas has announced three test flights, with 40 people traveling directly from London or New York to Sydney, to see how the human body copes with 19 solid hours of air travel.Qantas previously announced its goal of operating direct flights between London, New York, and three Australian cities -- Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne -- by 2023.The test flights scheduled for October, November and December will move the airline closer to that target and enable Qantas, alongside medical experts, to test the health and wellbeing impacts on passengers and crew.Bjorn Fehrm, an aeronautical and economic analyst at Leeham News, explains to CNN the appeal of the ultra-long-haul flight, as opposed to a more typical two-part journey stopping in Dubai or Singapore.There's no layovers, no extra journeys through customs and no transfer stress, he points out. "You can plan it so you fly over night, and you could arrive to actually have a productive day the next day as well," says Fehrm. "It's going to be businesspeople that fly this way."If the 19-hour flight becomes a reality, it's likely to cost travelers more. "It's cheaper for the airline to do two separate flights," Fehrm says. "But some people are prepared to pay the extra price of that ticket."Before the trials begin later this year, three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, fresh off the production line, will be flown from Boeing's factory in Seattle to either London or New York.After the test flights -- two from New York, one from London -- the new planes will enter commercial service. Most of the people on board the test flights will be Qantas employees, so seats won't be available for purchase.Researchers from Sydney University's Charles Perkins Centre, Monash University and the Alertness Safety and Productivity Cooperative Research Centre -- a scientific program backed by the Australian government -- will examine the impact of the long flight on those on board.Passengers in the main cabin will wear monitoring devices, and experts from the Charles Perkins Centre will study how their "health, wellbeing and body clock" are impacted by a set of variables that include lighting, food and drink, movement, sleep patterns and inflight entertainment.Monash University scientists will focus on the flight crew, recording their melatonin levels before, during and after the flights, as well as studying brain wave data from electroencephalogram devices worn by the pilots.This information will then be shared with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority "to help inform regulatory requirements associated with ultra-long haul flights," Qantas said in a 2765

Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage.The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. While that means a break from class, for some students it means an end to the free and reduced school lunch they depend on during the school year. However, one Colorado community is making sure its children don’t go hungry this summer. “I feel good. I love it,” says Salina Sanchez. Sanchez operates a retired bus that was turned into a mobile café. Sanchez is part of the team at Aurora Public Schools bringing free lunches to where students are. “Just giving the free meal and at least knowing that they're eating, and that, that's what's good,” Sanchez says. Across the country, 1 in 6 children in America live in households without consistent access to an adequate amount of food. In the Aurora Public Schools district, roughly 70 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. In the past, the school provided lunches at school cafeterias during the summer, but getting to the school was a challenge for many students. Therefore, school officials decided to transform buses going out of service into bright, mobile cafés. “Just create a spot where they could come see us…for free,” says Stacey Bennett with the Aurora Public Schools Nutrition Services. “Not have to go into a building and just be more visible and take the food to them. Now, three mobile cafés serve students lunch during the week at several locations. It’s free to all children, whether they are students in the district or not. “It is a small gesture, but it has a huge impact,” Bennett says. For Sanchez, seeing the reaction from the kids makes it all worth it. “I have like over 600 kids. I can say that they are mine, because I treat them all as if they were mine,” Sanchez says. 1729

Sports fans may be looking for other viewing options after another company has decided to drop regional sports networks from its channel lineup. Streaming service YouTube TV announced on Thursday that it will drop a number of regional sports networks that carry the a large number of MLB, NHL and NBA games throughout the country. The drop goes into effect on Saturday. The channels affected are FOX Regional Sports Networks. In total, more than a dozen channels spread throughout the country will no longer be on YouTube TV.
