SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents arrested five people in connection with a human smuggling incident, including one man convicted of being a sexual predator.A vehicle traveling through a temporary immigration checkpoint in Potrero failed to stop at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, before agents stopped the vehicle several yards past the checkpoint.Agents say five males in the vehicle were questioned. Three passengers in the vehicle's backseat said they were from Mexico but had no U.S. documentation, according to CBP. The driver and front seat passenger claimed to be from the U.S.The driver and front passenger were arrested on suspicion of smuggling and the three other passengers were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally, CBP said. During a records check at a nearby station, agents learned one passenger, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was convicted in 2012 of kidnapping and rape of a minor in San Diego. He was sentenced to a seven-year prison term and removed from the U.S.“I am proud of the great work agents demonstrated in arresting this known child predator,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “Their actions help keep our communities safer.”Both U.S. citizens face human smuggling charges and the previously deported Mexican man faces federal charges. Many inland residents chose to spend the day on the coast to escape the blistering heat.They say home is where the heart is. But for Peggy Dudenhoeffer, home is where the heat is. The Fallbrook resident drove 50 miles south Saturday, to enjoy the day in Bankers Hill, where it was about 15 degrees cooler."We feel like we're on vacation!" she said. "I like it better out here. We're lucky to be in San Diego to be able to sit outdoors in the summertime."She and her friend were at Barrio Star restaurant, which moved its operations all outdoors because of COVID-19 restrictions. But the restaurant was not going to let the heatwave turn customers away. They installed misters onto their rooftop overflow area."Right now, with this weather, it couldn't be better," Barrio Star General Manager, Michael Simpson, said. "Some nice mist, some nice picnic tables, and some nice margaritas!"Some preferred being closer to natural water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Country music lovers in Mission Valley are fighting to keep InCahoots from closing at the end of the year. One woman started a petition on change.org in hopes of saving the beloved bar. Former congressional candidate Morgan Murtaugh started the petition on Sunday. She said she has been going to InCahoots for years and was devastated to find out the bar was sold. The owner tells 10News the land was sold and their lease was not extended. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities eradicated a massive illegal marijuana grow operation discovered near a popular trail in the Rancho Pe?asquitos area.According to Drug Enforcement Administration officials, San Diego police officers were called out to an area of the Del Mar Mesa Preserve on Tuesday regarding a homeless encampment. That’s when they discovered more than 2,000 marijuana plants.The plants were 5- to 7-feet tall and were ready to be harvested. The street value of the crop is estimated to cost as much as .5 million, the DEA said.The plants were hidden below the canopy of the natural vegetation.“The way that it was set up, it was obvious people were living on that property, would lead us to believe, if we had to make a guess, it was most likely cartel-related,” DEA officials said.They called it a sophisticated operation, adding it was rare to see an illegal grow of its size growing in a city so close to homes.“In this case, we think it's more likely they found a fire hydrant or some sort of a city water source that they were able to tap into,” DEA officials said. “We couldn’t find that in this case, but we think that’s the most likely scenario.”Authorities said there was also an extreme fire danger associated with the grow. They found trash in the vicinity, as well as two propane tanks and open flame burners for cooking in an area with tall, dry vegetation.Authorities have not found anyone connected to the illegal operation.
