SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Friday, a group of San Diego teenagers got a lesson in what it takes to make it in San Diego. Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosted the Helix High class of seniors at their Finance Park. "These are all seniors getting ready to go into the real world, this is a program getting them real-world ready," said Valerie Hash, Capstone Manager for Junior Achievement. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millennials outpace Generation X in both total debt and long-term savingsWith the help of volunteers and technology, students gain the knowledge and skills to make smart financial decisions. In the four-hour crash course, students become adults for the day, complete with a salary, family, education, and debt. Once they have that information, they use their tablets to plan, budget, and save. "The number one thing I hear is kids are expensive! And I tell them, yes you are! So then they understand all the decisions their family has to make in order to make their life awesome and possible," said Hash. When taking out loans and making other purchases, students see real-world San Diego costs. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Affording the cost of pet ownership"When we're working with students, national averages don't work. We're San Diego, California, we are extra! So we want to make sure students see that. Yes, you're going to make more money, things are going to be more expensive, how do you mitigate that? Because if you want to stay in San Diego, you should understand that," said Hash. Students were assigned various careers like psychologists, teachers, and dental assistants. They learn the importance of spending money wisely and recognizing a budget as a crucial tool.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: How to budget when you're on an inconsistent income"Number one is yes, kids are expensive, number two, yes, San Diego is expensive, but number three, it's all possible, it's doable. You can still live in San Diego, have a home, have a car, clothe your family, but you have to make other types of sacrifices," said Hash. Junior Achievement welcomes other schools to take part in the Finance Park. Some scholarships are available.Businesses and individuals can also sponsor a school to take part in the program. 2260

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the San Diego Zoo's oldest residents was euthanized due to age-related illnesses Wednesday. The zoo's male African lion, M'bari, had been suffering from a degenerative kidney, large kidney cyst, and spinal arthritis and under veterinary care before the decision was made to put him down, according to park spokesperson Andrew Jones. At 15-years-old, M'bari had exceeded expectations of a lion's average lifespan, which is about 10 years in the wild and can exceed 25 years in captivity, according to the zoo."In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable," a statement from the zoo read. "This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him."M'bari was introduced to locals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2004 with the opening of Lion Camp when he was about two years old. He eventually moved to the San Diego Zoo in 2009, and has most recently lived with his mate, Etosha, in the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey habitat. Perhaps the most vocal of the pride, visitors were routinely treated to M'bari's mighty roar when visiting the park."His early morning and late afternoon roars could be heard throughout the entire Zoo," officials said. 1358

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Port of San Diego Commissioners saw the latest draft of the new Port Master Plan this week while allowing people who live in the area one more chance to weigh in on the region's future. The Port Master Plan is a 51-page document that will guide development along the San Diego Bay. This is the Plan's first update since it was created in 1981."For the first time, we include elements, or chapters of goals, objectives, and policies that will guide issues that apply Bay-wide, not just specific to individual locations," says Lesley Nishihira, the Port's Planning Director. The new Master Plan calls for more hotel development, with nearly 4500 new rooms on Harbor Island and the Embarcadero. But it prohibits new hotel rooms on Shelter Island, the Coronado Bayfront, and the Silver Strand.RELATED: Planned park could impact USS Midway MuseumIt also includes provisions for height restrictions on new buildings, a plan to turn the parking lot at Navy Pier into park space, and commercial industry use guidelines along the Bay.Port employees have been working on it for nearly eight years, with the Port Commissioners holding 40 meetings about the Plan, as well as dozens of public forums. But critics say it is too focused on tourism and industry and does not do enough to help out San Diego residents who live along the Bay, particularly in low-income areas south of the Convention Center."The status quo isn't good enough for the community," says former City Councilman David Alvarez, who has been vocal in his criticism of the new Plan. "We've seen the pollution. We've seen the impacts; the parking problems, the lack of access to the water (for low-income residents)."Alvarez brought these issues up at a public comment session on Monday. He says, to his surprise, the Commissioners voted unanimously to make sure more Social and Environmental Equity issues go into the Plan.Port employees say they will include specific policies in the final draft to ensure all San Diegans can benefit from the Bay."We'll take a closer look at those policies and see where we can include more information to make sure we're truly addressing the issues as needed," says Nishihira.Port employees are now finishing the Final Draft of the new Master Plan. It should be completed by the summer of 2021. After that, it needs a full environmental review and then approval from the California Coastal Commission.Nishihira says the entire process should be complete by the start of 2023.To see the latest version of the Port Master Plan, click here. 2553
