SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego announced Monday a three-year pilot project to test the use of concrete tide pools as a shoreline stabilizing tool. The concrete company ECOncrete will analyze the efficacy of its concrete tide pools as a possible replacement for traditional shoreline-stabilizing tools like rock armoring. The concrete tide pools will also serve as ecosystems for aquatic animals and organisms that live in natural tide pools. The tide pools interlock like puzzle pieces and are made of low carbon concrete that, according to the company, is environmentally safe and tailored to the environment in which its placed. ECOncrete plans to install 72 of the concrete tide pools across three areas of Harbor Island's shoreline, according to the Port of San Diego. ``ECOncrete's Coastal Star tide pools have great potential to provide many benefits for San Diego Bay,'' said Port of San Diego Board Chair Garry Bonelli. ``The Port looks forward to seeing if they can provide shoreline stabilization, help guard against coastal flooding, and improve the ecology of our bay water.'' The project is the eighth approved in the Port of San Diego's Blue Economy Incubator, which is intended to streamline the process in which businesses can launch pilot projects for so-called blue technology. The port launched the incubator program in 2016 as a way to collaborate with businesses focused on restoring ecosystems, improving water quality and fisheries and monitoring the environment. ECOncrete plans to monitor the tide pools every six months to examine how they could replace current shoreline stabilizers in the San Diego Bay. The best-case scenario, according to the company, would be protecting the city from rising water levels due to climate change while also protecting and sustaining local marine life. ``We are eager to help protect the city's coastlines while increasing resilience and rejuvenating the marine ecosystem of the area,'' said ECOoncrete CEO Shimrit Perkol-Finkel. ``The newly developed Coastal Star tide pool in partnership with the Port of San Diego will help change the way our future coastlines look and function.'' 2162

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country. The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. For the biomedical science rankings, Nature Index reviewed55 journals chosen by an unaffiliated group of scientists with articles that span from 2012 to 2018.According to Nature Index Chief Editor Catherine Armitage, biomedical science can describe a variety of research topics such a genetics, microbiology and biochemistry."Biochemistry and cell biology, and genetics are the biggest fields by article count, but microbiology and biomedical engineering, reaping rewards from CRISPR and the microbiome, are the fastest rising among the top 10 fields of research,'' Armitage said.Harvard University topped both lists of healthcare institutions.Stanford University, UC San Francisco, Yale University and University of Pennsylvania rounded out the top five among university-affiliated biomedical science institutions.Worldwide, the National Institute of Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Stanford and Germany's Max Planck Society flanked Harvard."These new rankings reinforce other third-party endorsements of UC San Diego's faculty and the quality of its research,'' UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. "Our biomedical researchers continue to discover solutions to theworld's most pressing health issues.'' 1848

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Foundation announced Tuesday a million donation to UC San Diego to help establish a school of public health.UCSD plans to match the gift and hopes to raise another million to construct a school of public health building pending approval by the University of California. The gift from the Wertheim Foundation is dependent on whether UC's leadership approves UCSD's request."Public health is a field of study and practice that endows individuals and communities with the ability to promote health and prevent disease," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "As a nation, we face unprecedented health challenges. Our university, committed to the greater good, is leading the charge toward understanding, preventing and eradicating threats to public health locally and globally. This philanthropic investment from the Wertheim family will help transform public health as we know it."UCSD currently offers a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in public health, as well as a joint public health doctoral program with San Diego State University. UCSD also opened an Institute for Public Health in 2014, and school officials believe the current public health infrastructure makes UCSD a persuasive candidate for a school of public health."As UC San Diego builds our vision for a healthier world, we are committed to leveraging all of our resources -- across campus, across disciplines and across institutions -- to fully address the complex dynamics that affect public health," said David Brenner, vice chancellor for UCSD Health Sciences.Scientist, clinician, entrepreneur and philanthropist Herbert Wertheim, inventor of eyeglass tints that block ultraviolet light, said he and his wife Nicole made the donation for their 48th wedding anniversary."The most important thing we can achieve is making our communities healthier across the lifespan, and thus more productive," he said. "Prevention is, and always will be, the best medicine."The Miami-based founder and CEO of Brain Power Inc., which manufactures ophthalmic instruments and chemicals, said Brenner "has been a friend for five years, and we've talked about this initiative. ... We are excited for the opportunity and our partnership with UC San Diego to support public health at UC San Diego."The fundraising is part of UCSD's Campaign for UC San Diego, a billion effort to improve student experiences, campus facilities and research opportunities. The school has raised .6 billion since it launched the campaign in 2012. 2553
