NEW YORK, N.Y. - There is no secret ingredient at Enoteca Maria on Hyatt Street in Staten Island.But someone special is always in the kitchen. The restaurant closed its dining room with the rest of the city in mid-March.It seats about three dozen people in the St. George section of Staten Island. Since opening in 2007, it has featured a rotating special menu prepared by the women along with an Italian menu.It’s known as the Nonna Project, which is Italian for “grandma.”To create a revenue stream and protect the health of the grandmothers and staff, they have not reopened.The women head to the kitchen one at a time to make batches of sauce to sell on the restaurant website.Rosa Correa will share her recipe for her delicious sauce from Peru. Don’t forget the chilies.“Amarillo, onions, garlic, that’s it,” she said.Maral Tseylikman is from Azerbaijan. She says she misses the customers.“I do for you the best I can and you will enjoy,” she said.Owner Joe Scaravella hasn’t planned for a reopening yet. Nine-year-old Nariya White loves to concoct slime and make lip gloss. She's an aspiring scientist and an expert at turning simple ingredients into original products. So when she was bullied this past school year, she turned that experience into something positive.“Two girls were bullying me, and I just decided I should make a book about bullying," said White.In March, she wrote a book called "A Slimetastic Day." It was recently published and is available on Amazon.The book is about "encouragement." When two boys call girls dumb, the girls initially become discouraged, but then the girls challenge the boys to slime making competition. The girls use their creativity and knowledge to prevail. White hopes her book inspires other children.“The book was about bullying, so if someone in your school or on the street is bullying you, you shouldn’t really care about it because you have your family, cousins, and friends that care about you," White said.White's mother Kina knew the book would be a bestseller with family and friends but said she didn't expect all the praise they've received from strangers. She hoped publishing the book would help spread the word.“I thought it was important just to make other people aware that you can turn a negative into a positive, and I know that there are many kids that are dealing with the same situation and many parents," said Kina White.The young author leaves her readers with this message, on the book's last page."From that day on, the girls knew that anything boys could do so could girls."WKBW's Gilat Melamed first reported this story. 1598

NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

New research confirms that temperature and symptom checks miss many coronavirus infections. A study published Wednesday found that these measures failed to detect infections in new Marine recruits before they started training, even after several weeks of quarantine. Many recruits had no symptoms yet still spread the virus. The work has implications for colleges, prisons, meatpacking plants and and other places that rely on symptom screening. Doctors say more COVID-19 testing is needed, especially in younger people who often don't develop symptoms.“We spent a lot of time putting measures like that in place and they’re probably not worth the time as we had hoped,” said Jodie Guest, a public health researcher at Atlanta’s Emory University who had no role in the research.“Routine testing seems to be better in this age group” because younger adults often have no symptoms, she said.The study was led by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and the Naval Medical Research Center.It involved 1,848 Marine recruits, about 90% of them men, who were told to isolate themselves for two weeks at home, then in a supervised military quarantine at a closed college campus, The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, for two more weeks. That included having a single roommate, wearing masks, keeping at least 6 feet apart and doing most training outdoors. They also had daily fever and symptom checks.The recruits were tested for coronavirus when they arrived for the military quarantine and 7 and 14 days afterward. Sixteen, or about 1%, tested positive on arrival and only one had any symptoms. Another 35 -- an additional 2% -- tested positive during the two-week military quarantine and only four had symptoms.Only recruits who tested negative at the end of both quarantine periods were allowed to go on to Parris Island for basic training.Genetic testing revealed six separate clusters of cases among the recruits.A separate study published Wednesday in the New England journal reports on an outbreak last spring on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Among the crew of 4,779, mostly young people, 1,271 became infected; 77% did not show symptoms when diagnosed and 55% never developed any.The case shows that “young, healthy persons can contribute to community spread of infection, often silently,” Dr. Nelson Michael of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research wrote in a commentary. 2442

NEW YORK (AP) — Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime confidante Ghislaine Maxwell has been transferred to New York to face charges she recruited women and girls for him to sexually abuse.The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Maxwell was transferred Monday and is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.Prosecutors have asked a judge to schedule a Friday court appearance in Manhattan federal court for Maxwell.The 58-year-old was arrested last week at a million estate she had purchased in New Hampshire.Maxwell was the former girlfriend and longtime close associate of Epstein, who killed himself in a Manhattan jail last August while he awaited trial on federal sex trafficking charges.She has denied wrongdoing and called claims against her “absolute rubbish.” 794
