XI'AN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 100 children were sickened by food poisoning Monday noon at a kindergarten in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.The accident occurred at Zhaocun Beibeile Kindergarten at Weiyang District of the provincial capital Xi'an City, where the children suffered from nausea and diarrhea after lunch, said a spokesman from the Weiyang District Government.The sickened children were rushed to five local hospitals for treatment, and their conditions were reported as not life threatening, the spokesman said.An initial inspection showed that their sickness was caused by nitrite intoxication, and the exact cause is under investigation.

LUQA, Malta, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A chartered plane of China Eastern Airlines carrying 272 Chinese evacuees from Libya left Malta for Shanghai on Saturday.The Airbus A330-300 plane took off at 8:20 p.m. local time ( 1920 GMT) from the Malta International Airport, to be followed shortly by another chartered plane of China Eastern Airlines with 278 Chinese evacuees on board.The 550-strong Chinese nationals from a Chinese construction company were among a total of 2,216 people who arrived by a ship from violence-torn Libya at the Grand Harbor in Valletta, capital of Malta, on Saturday.In addition to the 2,216 Chinese nationals, the ship chartered by the Chinese embassy in Malta also carried dozens of citizens of other countries.The vessel, which was the first Maltese ship chartered by the Chinese government to evacuate Chinese nationals, left Libya's Benghazi on Friday.Maltese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who went aboard the ship, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for helping to evacuate some Maltese nationals from Libya.Chinese Ambassador to Malta Zhang Keyuan also thanked the Maltese government for its cooperation in the evacuation of Chinese nationals.A 19-day-old baby was among the evacuated Chinese, said a source with the Chinese embassy.China Eastern Airlines will fly four planes every day to the Mediterranean island nation from Feb. 28 to March 10, as part of all-round airborne evacuation missions aimed at taking stranded Chinese citizens back home as soon as possible, according to information from an emergency meeting of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in Beijing on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. announced on Tuesday that it has updated its iMac all-in-one desktop, adding Intel's next generation quad-core processors, Thunderbolt data ports and a new HD camera.Starting at 1,199 U.S. dollars, the new iMac is up to 70 percent faster and its new graphics deliver up to three times the performance of the previous generation, Apple said in a statement.The new iMac features quad-core Intel Core i5 processors with an upgrade option to Core i7 processors.The 21.5-inch model has a single Thunderbolt port while the 27- inch has two, in addition to four USB 2.0 inputs and a FireWire 800 port.Thunderbolt, which debuted with Apple's updated MacBook Pro notebooks in February, is also an Intel design bringing together high-speed data transfer and high-definition display onto a single cable. ROME, May 26 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever, a viral disease deadly to pigs but harmless to human beings, is spreading beyond Russia and the Caucasus region into Europe, the United Nations' food agency said Thursday."African swine fever is fast becoming a global issue," said Juan Lubroth, chief veterinary officer for the Food and Agriculture Organization."It now poses an immediate threat to Europe and beyond. Countries need to be on the alert and to strengthen their preparedness and contingency plans," he said.The disease, for which there is currently no vaccine, was introduced into Georgia from southern Africa late in 2006. It entered through the Black Sea port of Poti, where garbage from a ship was taken to a dump where pigs came to feed, the FAO said.Strategies to tackle African swine fever include quarantine, on-farm security and other measures aimed at minimizing the risk of introduction and establishing of the disease.
