SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego County have doubled in the past two weeks. As cases continue to soar through the country many hospitals are being pushed to their limits.Nurses at Paradise Valley Hospital have seen some of the worst cases of COVID-19. In a new series of PSA videos, frontline workers like Rochielle Jocson are urging everyone to keep fighting.Jocson spends the night shift in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit treating patients who are struggling to survive.“I get scared honestly,” said Jocson. “I don’t want to bring it home to my family.”For the past eight months, she’s suppressed exhaustion and conquered fear.“Sometimes it’s just not within your hands and you cry it out,” said Jocson. “Let it all out, take a deep breath and do it another day.”But the situation is only getting worse.In a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher says the number of COVID-related hospitalizations have doubled in the county over the last two weeks. County hospital beds are now inching towards 80% capacity.Jocson says they’re fully staffed and have enough supplies at Paradise Valley for now, but she knows the virus is unpredictable.“Resources are limited. We don’t know when the supplies are going to last,” said Jocson.She lives through the wrath of COVID every day and knows some people still aren’t listening to the warnings.“It’s heartbreaking to just see people not follow safety precautions,” said Jocson. “It’s like a punch in the gut so-to-speak to us healthcare workers.”She’s hoping to change that with a simple message.“You may be okay but the next person that you’re giving it to, will they be okay?” said Jocson.While the road ahead will still be long, there’s nowhere else she would rather be.“That’s why we keep going when at times we want to give up,” said Jocson. “Because you have that one patient that makes it worth it.”Paradise Valley Hospital tells ABC 10News their ICU is still under capacity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another testing site is being added to San Diego County, and this one will be the closest to the U.S.-Mexico border so far for the region.The San Ysidro port of Entry’s PedWest crossing is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian international border crossings. Within the next two weeks, a testing site at that location will join the more than two dozen others across San Diego County. It will be an appointment-free, walk-up site. Officials expect 200 tests to be done daily there.Chicano Federation Chief Strategy Officer Roberto Alcantar said this is a step in the right direction as far as testing is concerned, but said there is still work to be done to help the Latino community.Related: San Diego County launches COVID-19 outreach campaign for LatinosHe said many in the Latino community are afraid of getting tests done because of the fear of a positive test.“Our community is nervous about losing their jobs, not being able to go to work, the real economic impact that comes from being positive and feeling that that might hinder them in a way,” he said.He added that this is a big-picture problem. The Latino community lacks affordable housing, forcing families to live in close quarters and increasing the risk of spreading the virus, and also forcing people to live across the border to find affordable housing. Many of these people are essential workers and need to continue to work to support their families, so they cross the border on a daily basis. This new site will help give them access to testing.“They’re having to cross the border every day. We’re hearing from workers that they’re spending 4-5 hours every day waiting just to cross,” said Alcantar.Alcantar also said that the new testing site will likely lead to more positive rates, as is expected with increased testing, and he worries about what that will do to the perception of the Latino community, which already has higher numbers than the rest. As of August 9, 62% of San Diego’s cases are Hispanic people, a community that makes up just 34% of the population. That number will likely continue to climb with another testing site in an area dominated by Spanish speakers. This, tied with a perception that people are carrying the virus from Mexico to the U.S., could be bad.“Our concern is that this will help push further that narrative that we have to have a testing site because the rates are coming from Mexico,” he said.The Chicano Federation has been working with UCSD to reach out to the Latino community and find out why they don’t want to get tested and also encourage them to get tested. That number splits into 4,476 unsheltered people and 3,626 classified as sheltered in the county.Members of the Trump Administration visited Los Angeles this month to tour the city's homeless encampments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol is searching for the people on board a Panga boat that washed ashore near Sunset Cliffs.A neighbor says they heard a dog barking around 3 a.m. Monday morning then saw the boat while on a morning walk.The boat has “Ensenada. B.C.” painted on the bow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans plans to close a portion of eastbound State Route 56 overnight Thursday.According to the agency, all eastbound lanes of SR-56 at Camino Del Sur as well as the Camino Del Sur on-ramp will close Thursday from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m.The closure will take place so crews can work on the Carmel Road overcrossing.
