FULTON COUNTY — A jury has found a woman guilty on all counts for hitting and killing three children and seriously injuring a fourth as they attempted to get on a school bus last year.Sentencing for Alyssa Shepherd will be held Dec. 18.Closing arguments wrapped up this afternoon in the case against Shepherd who is accused of striking and killing 6-year-old twins Mason and Xzavier Ingle and their 9-year-old sister Alivia Stahl in October 2018. Police and prosecutors have alleged Shepherd drove past a school bus stop arm near Rochester. A fourth child, Maverik Lowe, 11 at the time, was also struck and seriously injured. Lowe survived.Shepherd was charged with three counts of reckless homicide, one count of passing a school bus causing injury and one count of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury."The biggest thing with it is the total lack of braking the amount of distance that was covered and seeing something in the roadway on a Tuesday morning when it's school time and just barreling into it not slowing down. We felt like was just unacceptable," Fulton County Prosecutor Mike Marrs said. The childrens' mother, Brittany Ingle, spoke to reporters afterward and said she did not believe Shepherd showed any remorse at the trial."What I want to tell you as a mother, from one mother to another, when I was sitting up there giving my testimony, I looked at her straight in the eyes because you just want some feeling you just want something. and she gave nothing," Ingle said. "I was crying telling them how I found my sons in the road and she had no remorse, no emotion, and that hurt worse because she acted as if our kids were in the way, and if they were, they kind of ruined her life and she ruined ours."According to RTV6's newsgathering partner, WROI Giant FM Radio, Shepherd took the stand in her own defense.Shepherd testified she didn't take State Road 25 often, perhaps a couple times a week and not usually that early or late at night, WROI reported. Shepherd cried on the stand as she told jurors she could not process that it was a school bus until she saw kids and by then it was too late. 2146

Four of the 23 people who died in this weekend's powerful tornadoes were children, and one family lost seven people, according to Lee County, Alabama, Coroner Bill Harris. The youngest victim of the deadly storms was 6 years old, Harris said in a news conference Tuesday, and the oldest was 89.A devastating series of tornadoes ripped through Lee County on Sunday, leaving a path of destruction that county Sheriff Jay Jones said looked "as if someone had taken a blade and just scraped the ground."The search for survivors and more victims began Monday as emergency crews and residents witnessed the destruction left by the twisters. Officials say 77 people were initially admitted into hospitals, and as of Monday 10 remain hospitalized.Jones said the death toll might rise as search and rescue efforts continue. Most of the bodies were found in close proximity to the victims' homes, he added. The family that lost seven members was related by marriage and lived in two separate homes on the same road. Another seven or eight people are still unaccounted for, and investigators are in the process of contacting families to make sure these individuals are safe.'Our school feels empty without her' One of the children was identified Monday as 10-year-old Taylor Thornton, a fourth-grader at Lee-Scott Academy, a private school in Auburn, Alabama. Dr. Stan Cox, head of the school, confirmed Taylor's death to CNN after meeting with her parents.Taylor was a first-year student at the academy. Cox described her as "an extremely happy child" and said Taylor always had a smile on her face and quickly made friends during her first year."She jumped right in with our art program and won honorable mention with one of the school contests," Cox said. "Very inquisitive, she loved learning and always contributed in a positive way. Just a sweet precious child who was constantly happy. She was always pleasant to be around. People were better because they were with her and now our school feels empty without her."Lee-Scott Academy announced Thornton's death on Facebook on Monday."Our hearts at Lee-Scott Academy are broken this morning. Please pray for the Thornton family, our students, faculty, and staff during this difficult time," the post read. The school was closed Monday, Scott said, because of significant damage around the school.'A precious little man' The youngest victim in Sunday's tornadoes was identified as Armando Hernandez, 6, family member Sara Crisp said. Armando's family also lost their home in the tornado.Armando was known to his family as AJ and was described as "a precious little man that was loved by everyone," who "was always eager to give hugs and loved his family," according to a post on Facebook by his aunt Tina Melton."I can't even type the word," Melton's post read. "I will miss your little smile and your sweet voice and face."Here's the full list of victims:Armando Hernandez, 6Charlotte Anne Miller, 59David Dean, 53Emmanuiel Jones, 53Eric Jamal Stenson, 38Felicia Woodall, 22Florel Tate Stenson, 63Henry Lewis Stenson, 65Irma Gomez-Moran, 41James Henry Tate, 86Jimmy Lee Jones, 89Jonathan Marquez Bowen, 9Maggie Delight Robinson, 57Mamie Roberts Koon, 68Marshall Lynn Grimes, 59Mary Louise Jones, 83Mykala Waldon, 8Raymond Robinson Jr, 63Ryan Pence, 22Sheila Creech, 59Taylor Thornton, 10Tresia Robinson, 62Vicki Braswell, 69 3376

Flowers are placed in bullet holes and candles line the street near the scene of a deadly mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.“Once he unloaded a couple of times you could hear the police come in with their shots too,” Dayton local Mike Hoover said.Hoover is talking about the chaos after a man opened fire in a popular downtown entertainment district.“It’s home; it could have been me,” Hoover said, while wiping away tears. For some, tears have turned into rage.“We’re really pissed off to be quite frank about it,” said Ohio Congressman and Presidential candidate Tim Ryan.Congressman Ryan voiced his frustration, while calling for changes to gun control.“We’re not going to stand for anything less, and I think the president is pushing some reform that he wants to tie to immigration, which I think is complete bullsh**,” he said. Some locals are leaving politics out of this, rather focusing on helping their community heal.“Born and raised here,” said DeQuinn Talley. “I love this community, man. It’s where my heart is.”Talley of Duck’s Donuts loves Dayton so much that he got a tattoo to represent his hometown. Less than two days after the shooting, he’s giving in a time of need. “We’re going to take some donuts over to the local hospitals, to the nurses and doctors, who have over seen these victims,” he said. Not all victims, however, were hurt physically. Mark Hellier says this tragedy has wounded him emotionally.“I don’t know any other way to describe it than a terrorist attack,” he said. “This was everybody’s safe place down here.”Hellier says his safe space has been violated and that he’s now looking to move on and away from where the shooting happened.“It’s a constant reminder every time that I come downstairs I see where there was a dead body there,” he said. 1790
