is facing child abuse charges for allegedly leaving three young children in a freezing car while getting a spa treatment.Ericka Campbell, 23, was arrested Monday night for leaving her children unattended. She allegedly went inside a private spa at a Warren home. The children are 9 months old, 3 years old and 11 years old. They were left inside the locked car in 32-degree weather. Eventually, the 11-year-old called police. When they arrived, police say Campbell refused to come out until her eyebrows were done. She was handcuffed and her kids turned over to their grandmother. Child Protective Services is investigating.Police say she didn't think she'd be in the home for that long, and didn't think it was necessary to bring them inside.“It says 32 degrees. 6:30 at night. It’s dark out. The 11-year-old says her sister went in the house and she doesn’t know why," Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. "She hasn’t seen or heard from her in over an hour. They knock on the door and the homeowner says, 'yeah, she’s here. She’s getting a spa treatment.'”Campbell was charged and is currently out on bond. 1114
in Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The Larkspur Fire Department said the group of eight people were hiking near the Devils Head Lookout at the summit around 3 p.m. when the lightning strike in Pike National Forest occurred. Ryan Smedra, the incident commander for Jackson 105 Fire Protection District, said the strike hit a rock wall near the hikers and the blast knocked many of them violently to the ground.Five of the hikers affected were able to walk out of the area on their own, the fire department said. They were treated for minor injuries. But a couple of them had burns from the strike, Smedra said. Some of the patients also complained of having tingling sensations. Two other adults required assistance. One of them was transported to the hospital for observation. The eighth victim, an adult woman, suffered critical injuries. She had to be carried down from the trail in a stretcher and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials could not say what type of injuries she sustained. However, Smedra said she did not appear to have burns.Douglas County Search and Rescue said the operation was challenging due to the area's terrain. More than 30 people from multiple agencies were involved in rescue efforts. The lookout tower, established in 1912, is used by the U.S. Forest Service to spot fires. It's accessed by the Devils Head National Recreation Trail. 1394

in Highlands County. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a body found in a wooded area in Lake Placid, Florida, a little before Thursday afternoon. Deputies identified the deceased man as 45-year-old Melvin Olds Jr.Following the investigation, deputies noticed Olds suffered injuries that would come from an animal attack, believed to be from a pack of dogs. The medical examiner also responded to the scene and could not find any injuries other than the ones caused by the dogs. Autopsy results found more than 100 dog bites on the victim's body, the sheriff's office said on Friday. A final determination of what killed Olds will be made after toxicology results. A pack of dogs was later spotted in the area shortly after Olds' body was discovered. Deputies say six dogs have been captured in the area and their bite size matches wounds on Old's body. However, authorities say that alone is not enough to say for sure that they were the animals involved. DNA from the captured dogs will be compared to DNA collected from the wounds, deputies say. Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services officers have set traps in the area and Animal Services units have been patrolling the area looking for loose dogs who may have been involved in the attack."While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive. We don’t want anyone else to be injured.” 1617
