SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two puppies soon to be up for adoption in San Diego are already capturing hearts around the world. Two 3-month-old terrier-blends, named Star and Denver, were taken to Helen Woodward Animal Center on Feb. 11 after their mother had been dumped in a rural location in Louisiana. They were taken by van about 1,900 miles through a partnership with the rescue group Heart of Louisiana.Once in San Diego, it wasn't long before staff learned about Star's unique challenges and special bond with her brother. Star is blind and deaf and Denver had taken on the role of guide dog for his sister.RELATED: Assemblyman Todd Gloria announces bill to end puppy mills in California"While the rest of [Star's] littermates frolicked without her, her brother Denver kept a protective eye on her," the animal center wrote. "Choosing Star as his main playmate, the two were rarely apart and when separated, Denver would come running back to love on Star and let her know he was there."The pair's heartwarming story has made its way across the world, according to the animal center. Helen Woodward workers say they've fielded calls from New Zealand, Canada, and states across the U.S. inquiring about the duo.Lucky for San Diego, the animal center says the pair's next family must be local so that the center's trainer can help them begin their lives with a special needs puppy.RELATED: Pet stores at Westfield malls in Escondido and National City close amid legal pressure“It’s really extraordinary,” stated Helen Woodward Adoption Services Manager Dora Dahlke. “We never stop learning from animals. These two really can teach us all a thing or two about sibling love and how much we can achieve with the love of a good friend.”Though the duo was supposed to placed up for adoption together this week, the center says Denver was recently stung by a bee. Once the swelling goes down, the puppies will be available for a new family. 1936

San Diego (KGTV)- A new affordable housing building with studio- style apartments will be coming soon to East Village. The building will be used to house the homeless. City leaders and developers broke ground on the project this morning. “Every time we get the chance to break ground on another supportive housing opportunity means that we’re going to be able to help dozens of San Diegans who need that supportive services and housing,” says Council Member Chris Ward. The building will have over 70 units for people who have experienced homelessness. There will be at least a dozen more units for those who earn 50% or less of the median average income in San Diego. The 7-story building, which includes parking, will have a glass-encased lobby, community room, laundry facilities, and counseling offices. The project aligns with the mayor’s budget proposal. In the plan, .2 million will be used for homeless programs. City leaders say combating this issue is a priority and San Diegans could see more housing, like The Link building, in the future. “If we can do this one project at a time, we can actually get to the number of units that we need in 2 years to house all of the unsheltered, chronic homeless that we see every day,” says Ward.Developers hope to have the project done by early 2021. 1312

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers believe they have discovered a way to reduce what they describe as health risks associated with red meat. A study published Monday in the journal Nature Microbiology considers whether bacterial enzymes could be used to clear from our tissues a carbohydrate created when humans eat red meat. The carbohydrate, known as Neu5Gc, builds up as we eat red meat, researchers say. They suggest our immune systems treat Neu5Gc as a foreign invader and generate antibodies against it, leading to chronic inflammation and other diseases. A team led by UC San Diego professor of pediatrics and bioengineering Karsten Zengler, Ph.D., believes bacterial enzymes could remove Neu5Gc from red meat before people eat it. “It’s our hope that this approach could be used as a sort of probiotic or prebiotic to help reduce inflammation and the risk of inflammatory diseases - without giving up steak,” said Zengler. The researchers bought steak and pork sausage from a grocery store and rubbed it with a lab-made bacterial enzyme. They found that “sure enough, most of the Neu5Gc came right off,” according to UC San Diego officials. Zengler and his team are working to optimize the enzyme to make sure it removes Neu5Gc and not similar carbohydrates. The group will also explore mass production possibilities and the potential for preventing inflammation and inflammatory diseases. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, UC San Diego Chancellor’s Research Excellence Scholarship, and Science Without Borders, officials said. 1624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Point Loma boy must now walk to and from school after a thief stole his custom BMX bike. San Diego Police need the public's help to find the man who took the boy's prized possession. BMX riding is 9-year-old Bradley Ramos' favorite pastime. It's a passion that runs in the family. His father, Aaron, dabbled it in as a child. So did Bradley's cousin, Tyler."This bike was actually his cousin's bike when his cousin was his age. Now his cousin is 21 years old, so the bike has been in the family for a while," Ramos said. That was, until Memorial Day morning. Bradley's mother noticed the bike was missing from their front porch."My bike and my helmet got stolen," Bradley said. The family's security camera captured a man walking away with Bradley's bike. The video shows the young man with arm tattoos wearing a hat and backpack. He looks to be wearing glasses and a distinctive white watch."It kind of sucks because I have to get rides to school now when usually, I'd ride my bike and it's way quicker," Bradley said. The bike theft is the second in as many weeks for the Ramos family. Last Monday, thieves made off with at least ,500 worth of tools from Ramos' work truck. "Since that's been happening, we've been bringing the bike in, and we didn't do it just that one night, and it was gone," Ramos said. The BMX bike has thin red wheels with a racing number plate in the front handlebars. It's not a common model, so the Ramos family is asking people to keep an eye out, and alert authorities if they spot it. To the man who made off with the Ramos' family heirloom, Bradley and his father have a stern message. "Give it back, and never come back to this neighborhood again," Bradley said. "You're stealing from a little boy. That's not cool," Ramos said. If you spot the bicycle or the man in the video, call the San Diego Police Department's anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. 1916
