An Alabama state official is citing the Bible to defend GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore against sexual assault allegations on a 14-year-old girl decades ago.Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler, a Republican, dismissed the charges brought forth in a Washington Post article about Moore Thursday, telling The Washington Examiner that the relationship would be akin to that of Joseph and Mary."Take the Bible: Zachariah and Elizabeth for instance," Zeigler said. As many as 145 whales have died after being found stranded on a remote beach in New Zealand, conservation officials said Monday.Two pods of pilot whales were discovered just over a mile apart on Mason Bay, Stewart Island, a sparsely populated island in the country's south.Authorities were first alerted to the mass stranding by a hiker Saturday evening. Half of the whales were already dead. The remaining animals were later euthanized, according to New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC).A Stewart Island operations manager for the DOC, Ren Leppens, said that the remote location and condition of the surviving whales made it impossible to save them. He described the decision as "heart-breaking.""Sadly, the likelihood of being able to successfully re-float the remaining whales was extremely low," Leppens said in a statement. "The remote location, lack of nearby personnel and the whales' deteriorating condition meant the most humane thing to do was to euthanize."The DOC also announced that it was working with a local Maori tribe on the "next steps." In New Zealand, Maori groups are often involved in dismantling and burying the remains of beached whales in accordance with indigenous traditions.The incident is one of a series of recent whale strandings in New Zealand. On Sunday, 10 pygmy killer whales were found stranded on Ninety Mile Beach, in the country's North Island. Two have since died, with efforts still underway to "re-float" the remaining creatures.The DOC said that it responds to an average of 85 stranding incidents a year, although most involve single marine mammals rather than entire pods.The exact reasons why whales and dolphins become stranded are not fully understood. Contributing factors can include "sickness, navigational error, geographical features, a rapidly falling tide, being chased by a predator, or extreme weather," the DOC's statement said.Last year, around 400 pilot whales were beached in Golden Bay, on the tip of New Zealand's South Island, in what was believed to be the third largest mass stranding in the country's history.The largest is thought to have taken place in 1918, when approximately 1,000 whales stranded themselves on Chatham Islands. 2218

An investigation into what led up to an explosion that hurt officers and a hostage situation in North Haven continued on Thursday.State police said a man held his wife hostage inside of a home on Quinnipiac Avenue for several days.She escaped, but he barricaded himself inside a barn near a house on the property.That's when police said the explosion happened on Wednesday night.Eight officers were hurt and the suspect is not in custody. Police said they continue to search for him.The area surrounding the property has been blocked off by rows of cruisers. Quinnipiac Avenue is closed between McArthur Road and Pent Way.North Haven police said they first responded around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.A woman went to the North Haven Police Department with a complaint about an incident at the Quinnipiac Avenue home.Police said the woman had managed to escape after she was held hostage for three days by her husband.Troopers told Channel 3 that they determined a tactical response was necessary.A SWAT team was called in to help.While police and the SWAT team were negotiating with the man, state police said there was an explosion at a barn near the home.Flames were captured in video that was recorded at the scene.The last time the man was seen was when he was barricaded inside of the barn."The suspect is not in custody at this time," said trooper Kelly Grant, Connecticut State Police. "They are still attempting to locate that suspect. They have asked the residents right in this general vicinity to shelter in place while they conducted this investigation."The eight tactical officers who were hurt in the explosion were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.None of their injuries were life-threatening.State police have taken over the investigation.  1762

There are many reasons why finding a job right now is difficult, but one reason may involve the number of people holding off on retirement.“My career has been absolutely wonderful,” said Peggy Morriston Outon. “Because I am privileged to be around people who want the world to work justly and fairly.”For 40 years, Outon has worked in non-profit and is currently the assistant vice president for community engagement and leadership development at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. This May, she was planning on retiring.“I decided I was going to let this job open, a job I have loved and benefitted from, and have somebody else have a chance and see what they could do with it,” said Outon.However, a few months before retirement, the pandemic hit the United States and Outon’s plans had to change.“They were not going to be able to re-fill my position because of economic challenges with COVID, so all of a sudden, my desire to open up a position and leaving more work for my co-workers,” Outon added.Outon has now delayed her retirement indefinitely. She’s part of a growing number of Americans doing so because of COVID-19. In fact, the non-profit organization, Life Happens, just conducted a survey that showed 43 percent of adults have either already delayed retirement or are considering it.“It kind of has to do with the uncertainty of what this is going to look like, this pandemic’s effects on long-term and short-term finances, said Fasia Stafford, the president and CEO of Life Happens.“What we also found interesting was that the younger folks were delaying it even more than the older folks, so when you are looking at folks from 18 to 23, they are thinking that this is going to have long-term effects on them, that their retirement age might be delayed because of what is happening currently.”Currently, it doesn’t help with our country’s high level of unemployment, having so many people postpone their retirement. It negates the natural cycle of people exiting the labor market and making room for newer people to enter.“It is important for society,” said Outon. “I think it is healthy for younger people to get their chance and for there to be ability for them to make decisions and be in charge frankly.”If retirement nest eggs keep cracking because of economic recessions hitting almost every decade, those chances are going to be more and more delayed. 2566
