SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As cities nationwide remove landmarks named after Confederate or racially-charged figures, an online petition is demanding San Diego do the same at Mount Hope Cemetery.A Change.org petition is asking Mayor Kevin Faulconer to remove a memorial to Confederate soldiers at Mount Hope Cemetery."Why does the City of San Diego expect black citizens, literal descendants of the very people the monument celebrates enslaving, oppressing, and terrorizing, to maintain such a horrific monument?" the petition says.The petition has nearly 900 or 1,000 requested signatures.The monument was erected in 1948 on a plot owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who supporters call such markers, testaments to history.Both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried in the cemetery.10news found the monument stone heavily damaged, with pieces scattered around the monument. Sources tell us the vandalism is a recent and ongoing issue.The monument isn't the only one in San Diego that has been subject to Change.org efforts. In 2017, the city removed a marker from Horton Plaza Park that commemorated the Jefferson Davis Highway, named for the Confederate leader. Fast forward to Wednesday, the city removed another marker from the park, this time commemorating Robert E. Lee Highway."Robert E. Lee Highway marker is gone. In the letter, Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Jim Desmond, and Councilmember Chris Cate of the sixth district said Newsom’s “one-size-fits-all approach to closing entire business sectors is misguided as evidenced by the many sectors in San Diego forced to close their doors again despite not having contributed at all to the rise in our local cases.”Supervisors also pushed the governor to give more control to local leaders and health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. There are also trade associations and professional groups to join, even if you're still looking for a job."Whatever you put into it is what you'll get out of it," says Reynolds.Anyone interested in a career change can get connected in San Diego through the San Diego Biotechnology Network.
