Anyone looking to buy an appliance may need to wait a while — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some appliances are currently backordered for several weeks, even up to a few months.Tobie Stanger, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, says that anyone currently in the market for home appliances should be flexible."If you really need a refrigerator, they're out there, but you may not get what you want. So you'll have to be flexible," Stanger said.Consumer Reports has been around since 1936 and works to create a "fair" marketplace for all consumers. Stanger is an appliance expert and says some of the backlogs have to do with the pandemic and global factory shutdowns in the earlier part of the year.Add that to increased use of home appliances and increased demand, and you've got a problem."The companies are trying to ramp it up. They still, in sone cases, cannot find parts," Stanger said. "I have been told by one of our retailers that there are a couple of manufacturers that are not taking new orders until the end of September. So, they're trying, but it's a real grind."The Repair Association supports the aftermarket of "technology products" — anything with a computer chip. Gay Gordon-Byrne, the association's executive director, says the U.S. is overly reliant on China for all electronics."Everything from toys to tractors, refrigerators, cell phones, industrial controls — it is a massive problem if you can't fix that equipment," she said.Gordon-Byrne says that since things are backordered, there's a huge demand for repairs — which creates more problems."About 90% of the stuff on the market today can't be fixed — it either can't be fixed because it's made not to be fixed, or you can't fix it without the (original equipment manufacturer) because they want to make sure they're the only people that can fix it," Gordon-Byrne said.That means consumers are forced to buy new appliances — or, in this case, wait out the backlog.Gordon-Byrne suggests supporting independent, small appliance businesses and repair shops.Consumer Reports has similar advice."We recommend that, in addition to looking at the big box store, that you look at your local independent appliance dealer. They maybe have a reputation for not having as good a price, but we talked to many consumers who were able to get the independent to match the price," Stanger said.Matt Zieminski, a board member at The Repair Association, says not to ignore the refurbished option."There is actually a thriving refurbish effort right now where a repair shop will go around and pick up those units, take the effort to pick them up, clean them make them as good as new again and then resell them," Zieminski said.It may not be convenient, but the pandemic is forcing everyone to get creative and perhaps be patient to get what was once taken for granted. 2835
An Ohio company that makes bulletproof backpack shields is experiencing an increase in demand for its product due to concerns over school shootings."We've had, I would say, a 100 to 200 percent increase certainly in response," said Matt White, the director of marketing for ShotStop Ballistics, based in Stow.The backpack inserts are one-quarter inch thick and weigh about a pound. It's made from the company's Duritium technology, which can block bullets from handguns and some rifles. An Arizona woman is suing Red Lobster after she says she contracted E. coli from tainted lettuce. She’s the first person in Arizona to file a lawsuit connected to an E. coli outbreak stemming from romaine lettuce from Yuma.In a 17-page lawsuit, a woman named Rosalie Styles claims she was hospitalized with cramps, nausea, blood in her stool, all of it coming after a meal at a Red Lobster in Peoria. According to the lawsuit, Styles ordered a Caesar salad on or around March 23 at Red Lobster off 79th Avenue and Bell Road. Seven days later, doctors told her she tested positive for E. coli. The lawsuit says Styles spent three days in the hospital. She and her attorneys now believe the romaine lettuce she consumed came from Yuma. They also believe Red Lobster is liable for her getting sick. The complaint states that because of the restaurant's actions, Styles "was forced to endure great pain, suffering, and inconvenience and may endure the same in the future."Styles remained hospitalized until April 2 and was allegedly still recovering as of May 2, the date of the complaint.“E. coli is a really serious infection, it can lead to hospitalization, kidney failure, and sometimes death,” said Jessica Rigler with the state Department of Health Services. In fact, state health officials say 52 percent of the 121 people diagnosed, ended up in the ER during this latest outbreak. Eight people have been diagnosed with the infection in Arizona. One person in California died from their illness.“This is, however, our largest E. coli outbreak since 2006 when we had an outbreak associated with spinach,” said Rigler. More than 200 people were infected that year. “Right now the federal government is conducting a lot of traces back to find out if they can identify exactly where that lettuce was contaminated, was it at the farm, was it in a processing plant,” Rigler said. So far, state health officials say until the all clear is given, don’t take any chances and steer clear of romaine lettuce. “It’s possible we’ll be able to call a close to this outbreak soon, but we need to keep monitoring for the next ten or so days to make sure we don’t identify any additional cases,” said Rigler. “If you don’t know where your romaine lettuce came from, don’t eat it. As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the United States, traveling nurses jump from hot spot to hot spot, caring for patients and making sure hospitals are fully staffed. Grover Street is one of those nurses and specializes in trauma and intensive care.“I’ve worked in over 100 hospitals and probably 15 different states,” Street said.Street says just this year alone, he's been in New York, Miami, and California. He hops all over the country, doing four-week assignments for crisis nursing and coronaivurs relief. "Busy" and "intense" barely describe what he's experienced on the front lines.“I like going to the hot zones and really learning about this virus and learning about the different patients and human functionality and the way people think about this whole process because it’s probably never going to happen in my lifetime again,” Street said.While interesting from a scientific standpoint, he admits, it's natural to be afraid of this virus that has taken over our world.“I’ve worked with nurses that their families died, the nurse died,” Street said. “I worked with a physician, he died. This is real and I’ve been on the front lines since it started and its sad that a lot of people aren’t wearing masks and social distancing.”He says he prefers the traveling nurse aspect of his profession. There's more flexibility, and he says, it's better pay. As a former trauma nurse in the military, it's like a deployment. Except this time, he's being sent to a different type of war zone.“New York is starting to pick back up, Florida is starting to pick back up,” Street said. “I’m getting texts and emails everyday, 'Am I ready to go somewhere else as soon as this assignment ends?'”Lauren Pasquale Bartlett is the Senior Vice President of Marketing for Fastaff Travel Nursing, the agency for whom Street works. When asked how her organization fulfills the need, she said, “It's never a matter of how are we going to do it, it's at what scale.”“At this time last year, we had 3,000 nurses on assignment right, now we’ve got 6,000,” Pasquale Bartlett added.Traveling nurses, she says, have been backfilling hospitals for 30 years.“It really came out of the strike business when nurses were unionizing and going on strikes, they needed replacement nurses so the hospital started bringing in travel nurses to replace those striking nurses,” Pasquale Bartlett said.They answer the call when there are hurricanes, fires, intense flu seasons, and the coronavirus. Except, unlike those other short-lived events, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.“I know everybody (is) tired of what’s going on, ready to get back out there, go shopping, have parties, but we need to control this before you die or before your family member dies and then it’s too late so just stay safe,” Street said.Street says the difference between responses in each state is fascinating. He's looking forward to a bit of rest and relaxation before his next assignment and says his only wish is that everyone does their part, by washing hands, and wearing a mask to help protect medical staff and each other. 3101
