ISLAMABAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan ranks the seventh in the world in terms of diabetes prevalence rate and over 7.1 million people in the country are diabetes patients, reported local media on Monday.Quoting a report by the World International Diabetes Federation, a local English newspaper "The News" said that every year 89,000 people die of diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetes patients in the country could hit 11.5 million by the year 2025 if proper measures were not taken.This would make Pakistan the world's fifth largest country in terms of its number of diabetes patients 14 years later, warned the report.At a seminar organized Monday in Islamabad to observe the World Diabetes Day which falls on Nov. 14, Dr. Abdus Salam from Shifa International Hospital, a private-run hospital in the capital city, said that every ten seconds, two people are diagnosed with diabetes and one person dies of diabetes-related causes.The average age of diabetes patients in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, said the report. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday morning put two satellites into orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu Province.The satellites, Chuangxin 1-03 and Shiyan Satellite 4 were launched on a Long March 2D carrier rocket at 8:15 a.m. Beijing Time, said a Xinhua photographer, who witnessed the whole process.The Chuangxin 1-03, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will be used to collect and relay water conservancy, hydrological and meteorological data and data for power supply and disaster relief from monitoring stations.The Shiyan Satellite 4 will be used for experiments on space technologies and environment probe. Developed by the Chinese Research Institute of Space Technology, it is the country's fourth technology experiment satellite.The launch was the 151th of China's Long March series of rockets. The Long March-2D is one of the derivations of Long March-2.China started development of modern carrier rockets in 1956, and Long March rockets have become the main carriers for China's satellite launching.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A majority of the emergency hospitalizations for bad events related to medication use in old U.S. adults stem from four common medications, according to a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine Monday.The study was conducted by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of U.S.There are nearly 100,000 emergency hospitalizations for adverse drug events in older Americans, says researcher Daniel S. Budnitz, MD, MPH, director of the CDC's Medication Safety Program.And the four types of medication -- two for diabetes and two blood-thinning agents -- account for two-thirds of those drug-related emergency hospitalizations. They most often cited: warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); insulin; antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix); oral hypoglycemic agents."Both blood thinners and diabetes medicines are critical drugs that can be lifesaving," Budnitz says.However, he says that ''these are medications that you do need to pay attention to," being sure the dose and timing are correct, among other measures.
