SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of women gun owners joined in solidarity Friday for the launch of #NotMeSD.It was created by San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights. The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge and choice. The group believes one way to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is with guns. “We will stand beside you, we will help you, and if you want to look at owning a gun or just coming out shooting at the range to just feel some empowerment, we're willing to stand right next to you and say how can we help?" said Jill Barto, a SDCGO member. At the gathering, Barto shared her traumatic story of being sexually assaulted. "It’s still kind of emotional, but at age 14 I was raped, I was date raped by a boyfriend, it really took a toll on me. I ended up getting pregnant from the rape, and I had my child and raised him, he’s now 37-years-old," said Barto. She was lucky to find a strong support group, one of them today being SDCGO.“It gave me a voice, it gave me a voice to say this is what happened to me and I’m not going to be ashamed of it.”The group has a three-step approach for women considering gun ownership:Get free advice about firearms from women gun owners in SDCGOGet referrals to gun shops for discounts and receive help filling out paperworkReceive help applying for a concealed carry weapon permit“It doesn’t mean they're going to buy a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re going be CCW holders, but that’s their choice, and we’re here to support them on their choice," said Barto. However, some believe guns involved in domestic violence situations do more harm than good.Carol Landale is with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. She supports a woman's right to arm herself but has concerns with the #NotMeSD message."The statistics show that when there is a gun in the home women are five times more likely to be killed with that gun, especially in domestic violence situations," said Landale. She says if a woman is going to purchase a gun, they must be extremely careful with how they store it. She also believes a lot of training is necessary to be proficient, especially in a high-stress situation.“If you’re going to be using a firearm you need to be practicing all the time. The police practice all the time, the military practices all the time, for somebody just to have a gun stored in a bedside table, who may have shot it once at a firing range, it doesn't seem like a sensible way to be able to protect yourself."Landale believes the decision to purchase a gun and use it, can have consequences.“I think the most important thing is to recognize that responsibility and to make sure you’re going to be willing to use a deadly weapon to kill somebody, that’s huge," said Landale. You can learn more about #NotMeSD here. San Diego also has an A Girl & A Gun League which offers education and hands-on training for women, you can message them on Facebook for more information. 2998

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Five locations of the San Diego County YMCA reopened today. They include Dan McKinney, Jackie Robinson, Magdalena Ecke, McGrath Family, and the Mission Valley branches. But with ever-changing rules by the State and County, staff and members of the YMCA understand that this reopening may be short-lived.Twice a day, Doug Harrigan would come to the Mission Valley YMCA. But since the COVID-19 quarantine began, he switched to working out at home."It's been rough," Harrigan said. Now he's back."I had a chance to talk to the members that I used to see on a regular basis, and it just felt good to do a real workout in a gym rather than my living room."Starting July 1, 2020, Mission Valley, Dan McKinney (La Jolla), Jackie Robinson (Mt. Hope), Magdalena Ecke (Encinitas), and McGrath Family (Spring Valley) YMCA branches are open, at a modified capacity."Masks required, health check stations, signage everywhere, and we've separated the fitness equipment to the 6-foot social distancing requirements," Assistant Executive Director of the Mission Valley YMCA, Jason Milosh said.At this point, group exercise classes and pools remain closed.Last week, some branches, including Mission Valley, opened up its Kids Day Camps. This year, space is extremely limited due to social distancing rules, and there will not be any field trips. But parents are happy that they are keeping busy."Summer learning loss has been aggravated by the challenges that our school system has had in the last few months of school," Molish said. "So, we have incorporated some more academic components to our summer camps to help kids bridge that summer learning loss."But with the State and County coming out with new rules, seemingly every week, gyms and community centers like the YMCA, must be flexible."Re-closing is a possibility, and we are prepared for that," Milosh said. "We feel good about the precautions that we have taken, but if things worsen and it is determined that we need to close, then we are going to be prepared to do that."But for Harrigan, he hopes it does not come down to that, because with the YMCA, he says he would look and feel much different."It is essential. If I did not work out, I'd probably be 250 pounds," Harrigan laughed. On July 8, 2020, four more San Diego County YMCA branches will open. Those include Cameron Family (Santee), Copely-Price (City Heights), Toby Wells (Kearny Mesa), and the South Bay (Chula Vista) Family branches.Milosh also says he also hopes to reopen the pools for lap swim workouts by next week. For more information about YMCA reopenings, click HERE. 2612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at an assisted living center in the College Area.On Wednesday, 10News tried to get answers from Stellar Care Center, located just south of the College Area. On Tuesday night, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten revealed that they were looking into a patient at the home who may have tested positive. “Our staff [is] investigating this situation and once it's determined if there's individuals or patients with influenza-like illnesses, the staff there will collect specimen and send them to our lab for testing,” she stated.Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes continues to grow. In Kirkland, Wash., an outbreak of the virus at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Louisiana, seven deaths have been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. 10News reached out to Stellar Care Center and San Diego County for additional information. A spokesperson for San Diego County writes, "I can confirm that there is a positive case of COVID-19 at Stellar Care Assisted Living. Skilled nursing facilities throughout the County have amplified their protocols to address the COVID-19 pandemic using strategies similar to those recommended by the County of San Diego in responding to an influenza outbreak. These protocols include limiting the amount of people in congregant settings (including meals, activities and visitors) while amplifying cleaning and sanitation measures and providing additional training for staff."The State Department of Social Services writes, “In order to protect confidentiality, we are not able confirm or provide details regarding specific individuals or locations.” 1835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required the State Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to a person under 21.The proposed legislation came after ABC 10News uncovered that suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest purchased the weapon used in the April 2019 attack with an invalid hunting license that went unchecked. Earnest was only 19 at the time he bought the assault-style weapon from San Diego Guns, when the state's age-limit was 21. The age limit, however, remained 18 for those who possessed a valid, state-issued hunting license. The Justice Department does not verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife, instead leaving it to the gun shop to make the only determination. The governor said creating the verification system would require a 30-month information technology project and could disrupt other firearm technology systems in development under seven other bills. "I am concerned that adding an information technology project will impede DOJ's ability to perform the work it has already been tasked," Newsom said in a veto statement. In an interview Wednesday, State Sen. Anthony Portantino expressed shock and disappointment that Newsom vetoed the legislation. "It's a loophole that needs to be closed," he said. "You can't have a system that relies on the validity of a license not being checked to make sure that that license is actually valid. The whole goal is to keep guns out of the wrong hands. This shooter in Poway got a gun based on a faulty license."Portantino vowed to continue pushing for the change, either through the governor's budget in January or a new bill next year. When making the purchase, Earnest presented a state hunting license that was not valid until July 1, 2019, two months after the alleged attack. That technicality meant the sale should have been rejected, Portantino said. It was Portantino's law that raised California's purchase age limit to 21 but created the hunting-license exemption for those 18 and older. Portantino's bill, Senate Bill 914, would have required the Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to someone under 21. The bill passed both houses of the state Legislature before failing on the governor's desk.Still, legislators and Newsom did act in the aftermath of the shooting, by eliminating the hunting-license exemption for semi-automatic, center fire weapons. It still exists, however, for other guns, including bolt-action rifles and semi-automatic rimfire weapons. Israel Dahan, whose daughter Noya was injured by shrapnel during the attack, declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation related to the shooting. He said, however, that Noya, now 10, will likely need another minor surgery. He said physically she is holding up okay, but is still dealing with the aftermath psychologically.Earnest allegedly carried out the shooting the day after he picked up the gun, killing one congregant and injuring three others, including a child.A worker who answered the phone at San Diego Guns declined to comment Wednesday. 3176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Former Congressman Darrell Issa is standing behind a political ad that the San Diego chair of his own party has called highly inappropriate. The ad, running on local television, takes aim at Carl DeMaio, a key Issa opponent in the race to replace Duncan Hunter in California's 50th Congressional District. The campaign commercial presents itself as a retort to a recent DeMaio ad that questioned Issa's dedication to President Trump. Issa's ad turns that around. However, the attacks appear to get personal. The ad uses images of two news article headlines in The Hill and The Los Angeles Blade that describe DeMaio as "Gay." It also uses images of MS-13 gang members when talking about DeMaio's stance on a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants (DeMaio said in The Hill article that he supports a path for well-educated immigrants and those who came to the U.S. as children.)San Diego Republican Party Chair Tony Krvaric described the ad as highly inappropriate."We encourage all candidates to stick to the issues," he said. At a news conference Thursday, Issa defended the ad. 1110
