CHICAGO, Ill. – So far this year, the coronavirus pandemic has cut international tourism in half. But one Chicago mom decided she would take her family globetrotting anyway without an airplane.High school English teacher Lynn Gilbertsen says remote learning got her two young children, 6-year-old Max and 3-year-old Beth, interested in far-off places.“They'd started to ask lots of lots of questions about all the countries and you know they know all the continents,” said Gilbertsen. But with COVID-19 grounding true world exploration, she opted for a different approach.“It occurred to me that we could do something where we could go places instead of being stuck in our house,” said Gilbertsen. She started with a list of landmarks and monuments that could stand in for the real thing. That included places like a golf course Eiffel Tower for France, a Hindu temple and Taj Mahal mural for India, and a public park with a statue of Athena helped them learn about Greece.“I wanted to feel like it does when you travel, where you get to really immerse yourself in wherever you are for a little while,” said Gilbertsen. All of her travel destinations are within an hour of her Chicago home. For their visit to Italy, they chose the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In actuality, it’s a half-scale replica attached to a suburban YMCA.Another favorite was an architectural scavenger hunt for pagoda-inspired structures in Chinatown.“It seems to me like such low hanging fruit. But they loved going to Chinatown,” she said. “If you ask them what their favorite country is that we visited. They're like, ‘oh China.’”Along the way, they sample international cuisine.“I think it's hitting a lot of the sort of social, emotional pieces about why we learn about the world and why we study other people and other cultures,” said Gilbertsen. And of course they take a selfie to document each trip.Lynn’s husband, Joe Troutman, an elementary visual arts teacher says absent actual travel, this is an activity that any family can do anywhere.“I think this is our eighth or ninth country and our study so far,” said Troutman. “So, it's been quite a journey in its own right.”Gilbertsen has posted their international adventures online and is getting inundated with requests to share her ideas. Right now, she’s working on a curriculum and PDF guide to virtual travel. Her ultimate goal is to help her children become good citizens of the world.“I want them to have a broader understanding of the world younger. I think you have a lot of catching up to do if you're an adult and you're finally figuring out that the world is really big.” 2614

Calico Critters and a VTech Drill & Learn Toolbox are among several toys a Florida consumer advocacy group has deemed dangerous in its annual toy safety report ahead of the busy holiday shopping season. On Monday, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) released its "Trouble in Toyland," a guide to help keep children safe from dangerous toys. The report warns about several toys being sold across the U.S. are choking hazards, recalled toys being resold on eBay, magnets being swallowed, noisy toys, and in-app purchases. When it comes to toys with small parts, the report recommends parents inspecting the toys thoroughly "regardless of what the label does or doesn't say."For noisy toys, the report says they can hurt your child's hearing, so an adult should lower the volume or place tape over the speakers to "muffle the sound."Several toys mentioned in the report include:Neutronball building sets and magnets made by Zen Magnets LLC are considered choking hazards, according to PRIG."Never allow young children to play with high-powered magnets, and talk with older children about the dangers of being careless and leaving them within reach of their siblings," the report stated.Toys that have been recalled - 6" Promotional Aflac Doctor Duck, the Step2 Little Helper's Children's Grocery Shopping Cart, and the Fisher-Price Barbie Dream Camper — were recently found for sale on eBay."When shopping for toys, especially at garage sales and second-hand stores or sites, check saferproducts.gov to confirm the toy hasn't already been recalled," the report said. The report is there to inform the public as well as suggest guidelines for lawmakers. 1683

Capping days of commemorations of her extraordinary life, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg becomes the first woman in American history to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.Ginsburg, who died last week at age 87, also will be the first Jewish-American to lie in state and just the second Supreme Court justice. The first, Chief Justice William Howard Taft, also had been president.Ginsburg’s casket will be brought to the Capitol Friday morning for a private ceremony in Statuary Hall attended by her family and lawmakers, and with musical selections from one of Ginsburg’s favorite opera singers, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, planned to attend.Members of the House and Senate who are not invited to the ceremony because of space limitations imposed by the coronavirus pandemic will be able to pay their respects before a motorcade carrying Ginsburg’s casket departs the Capitol early afternoon. The honor of lying in state has been accorded fewer than three dozen times, mostly to presidents, vice presidents and members of Congress. Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights icon, was the last person to lie in state following his death in July. Henry Clay, the Kentucky lawmaker who served as Speaker of the House and also was a senator, was the first in 1852. Rosa Parks — a private citizen, not a government official — is the only woman who has lain in honor at the Capitol.Ginsburg has lain in repose for two days at the Supreme Court, where thousands of people paid their respects, including President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on Thursday. Spectators booed and chanted “vote him out” as the president, who wore a mask, stood silently near Ginsburg’s casket at the top of the court’s front steps.Trump plans to announce his nomination Saturday of a woman to take Ginsburg’s place on the high court, where she served for 27 years and was the leader of the liberal justices.Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, will be buried next week in Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband, Martin, who died in 2010. 2122
