American Airlines now won't use its fleet of Boeing 737 Max planes any time this summer. The world's largest airline, which has 24 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, said it is canceling about 115 flights a day through September 3 as a result of the grounding. It previously had canceled flights through August 19. The plane was grounded in mid-March after two fatal crashes, putting focus on a particular safety feature on the plane.American's canceled flights are the most extensive among US airlines. Southwest, which has 34 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, has canceled flights only through August 5 at this time. United Airlines' cancellations also run into August. Not all of the American flights scheduled to be flown by the 737 Max will be canceled outright. Some will be flown with other aircraft. American is also canceling some flights scheduled to be flown by different aircraft, such as the original 737, to shift those resources to other flights.American said it is adjusting its schedules to affect the fewest number of passengers possible, and passengers whose flights are canceled will be able to rebook at no cost or get a full refund if they don't wish to take their trip. The 115 flights and 24 planes represent about 2% of American's overall operations. The airline operates about 6,800 flights a day during the busy summer travel season, including those flown for it by regional feeder airlines. Its mainline operations include a total of more than 900 aircraft.Late summer is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel, so the lost flights will hurt the airline — although Boeing is expecting to find ways to compensate airlines hurt by the Max grounding. It is seeking to win approval for a software fix that is designed to address the automatic safety feature that is the focus of the investigation into the two fatal crashes."American Airlines remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing ... will lead to recertification of the aircraft soon," American said in its statement. "We are pleased with the progress to date." 2150

About 130,464 pounds of raw ground beef products have been recalled because they may contain plastic, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday. The products subject to the recall are 16-oz vacuum sealed packages of "Nature's Rancher 100% Grass Fed Organic Ground Beef 85% Lean, 15% Fat" and "Nature's Rancher 100% Grass Fed Organic Ground Beef 93% Lean, 7% Fat," the USDA said. These products, recalled by Rastelli Foods Group, have use or freeze by dates of 10/24/19, 10/31/19, 11/04/19, 11/07/19, and 11/11/19.The products were sent to distribution centers and then retail locations in Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland. The recall was initiated by customer complaints, though there have been no confirmed adverse reactions from the products, the USDA said. The USDA said consumers who have purchased the beef should not consume it, and anyone concerned about illness should contact a healthcare provider. 990

A tetraplegic man has been able to move all four of his paralyzed limbs by using a brain-controlled robotic suit, researchers have said. The 28-year-old man from Lyon, France, known as Thibault, was paralyzed from the shoulders down after falling 40 feet from a balcony, severing his spinal cord, the AFP news agency reported. He had some movement in his biceps and left wrist, and was able to operate a wheelchair using a joystick with his left arm.Researchers from the University of Grenoble in France, biomedical research center Clinatec and the CEA research center implanted recording devices on either side of Thibault's head, between the brain and skin, to span the sensorimotor cortex -- the area of the brain that controls motor function and sensation.Electrode grids collected the man's brain signals and transmitted them to a decoding algorithm, which translated the signals into movements and commanded a robotic exoskeleton to complete them.Over a period of two years, Thibault trained the algorithm to understand his thoughts by controlling an avatar -- a virtual character -- within a video game, making it walk and touch 2D and 3D objects. He trained on simple virtual simulations before using the exoskeleton -- which is assisted by a ceiling-mounted harness -- to eventually walk, and reach for targets with his arms.Over the course of the study, Thibault covered a total of 145 meters (around 476 feet) with 480 steps using the avatar, video and exoskeleton combined, researchers said in the study, which was published in 1549

A Virginia doctor was gunned down with his tour guide while on vacation in Belize, according to local authorities.Gary Swank was visiting the Central American country with his family. He had been on a fishing boat with local guide Mario Graniel when they were both shot dead, Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams said in a press conference Monday recorded by the San Pedro Sun newspaper. In the recording, Williams said the tour guide had a disagreement with a local gang kingpin, and agrees that Swank was a "victim of circumstance."Graniel had earlier reported to police that someone fired shots at his home on Friday, but he never filed a formal complaint, Williams said."We maintain police presence in the area to protect him and the community from further shootings but we can't follow the man everywhere he goes," he said. "He decided to go out with a tourist.""We did what we could have done in terms of detaining those who we believe were responsible and maintaining presence in the area where he lived."CNN has reached out to Belize authorities, but has not heard back.Swank was 'a well-respected and well-loved colleague'Swank was the medical director of Carilion Clinic cardiac catheterization lab and an associate professor of internal medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, according to a statement from the clinic. The school is in Roanoke, Virginia, about 170 miles west of Richmond."Dr. Swank was a well-respected and well-loved colleague who, each and every day, embodied the values that we hold dear," the statement reads. "His absence leaves a void in our team and in our community."Swank's patients were devastated to hear of his death."He saved my life, and every time I went to his office he was a very knowledgeable, patient and caring person," Teresa Hodges, who was Swank's patient for 13 years, told 1864
