LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin Hart has a new job — he will host the 2019 Academy Awards, a role the prolific actor-comedian says fulfills a longtime dream.Hart announced his selection for the 91st Oscars in an Instagram statement Tuesday. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Newly published research indicates there's an almost one-in-four chance the mountain lions living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana mountains could become extinct in those areas within 50 years as a result of urban encroachment, inbreeding, vehicle strikes, rat poison and wildfire, it was reported today.In the face of such a dire prognosis, what biologists call an extinction vortex, conservationists are considering a desperate and controversial remedy: capturing pumas in one part of the Santa Anas and trucking them across the 15 Freeway so that they can breed with isolated mates on the other side of traffic."Wildlife managers never want to be a shuttle service for wild animals,'' said Justin Dellinger, senior environmental scientist with the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Los Angeles Times reported. But translocation has potential merit in the short term; after all it helped bring the critically endangered Florida panther back from the brink.Mountain lions are not endangered in California, but groups living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana ranges now find themselves in genetic peril. Separated by freeways and lethal traffic, they are unable to range freely and are growing increasingly inbred, researchers say.In the Santa Monica Mountains, the 101 Freeway exists as a near impenetrable barrier to gene flow for a group of 10 mountain lions; in the Santa Ana Mountains, the 15 Freeway limits the movement of a family of 20 cougars.Sometimes, the animals manage to cross freeways without getting hit. At least seven cougars have crossed the 15 Freeway near Temecula in the last 15 years, and one sired 11 kittens. The fact that only one managed to reproduce, however, shows how difficult it is to diversify the gene pool in the lions still prowling the range.A population viability study published in the journal Ecological Applications predicts extinction probabilities of 16 to 28 percent over the next 50 years for these lions, which have the lowest genetic diversity documented for the specie aside from the critically endangered Florida panther.Study authors note also that wildfire and disease could result in "catastrophic mortality'' and further hasten the animals' disappearance.However, extinction probabilities were significantly reduced when computer models simulated the influence of two immigrant lions per year in areas blocked by development and freeways, according to a team of researchers that included Winston Vickers, an associate veterinarian at the UC Davis Karen C. LONDON (AP) — An American tourist from Louisiana helped stop a hammer-wielding thief who unsuccessfully tried to steal the Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral, working in tandem with a church employee to prevent the man from escaping.Matthew Delcambre, of New Iberia, Louisiana, told The Associated Press that he and his wife Alexis were sightseeing in the southwestern English city when a man tried to shatter the glass encasing the precious manuscript in the church's Chapter House. After Alexis tried to raise the alarm to others, Delcambre and other bystanders banded together to try to hold the thief back behind the doors of the Chapter House.When the thief pushed past them, the 56-year-old IT expert gave chase into an outer courtyard. He grabbed the man's arm near the courtyard gate and knocked away the hammer. A church employee tackled him and held him down."It wasn't me by myself," he said. "It was completely a group effort."The Magna Carta, which was protected by two layers of thick glass, wasn't damaged.Wiltshire police said Saturday that a 45-year-old man was freed on bail until Nov. 20 as officers continue their investigation.Salisbury Cathedral's Magna Carta is one of four existing specimens of the 1215 charter that established the principle that the king is subject to the law. It is considered the founding document of English law and civil liberties and influenced the creation of the U.S. Constitution.The document, Latin for "Great Charter" was short-lived. He played down earlier reports which depicted him as the hero, and said the people who should get the credit are cathedral workers and volunteers who tried to protect the Magna Carta."The heroes are the staff employees of the cathedral who protected the document, helped catch the guy and helped retain him until the police got there," he said. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An initiative to split California into three states has received enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot, its author said Wednesday.Venture capitalist Tim Draper said backers of what he has dubbed "CAL 3" would submit petitions with more than 600,000 signatures to election officials next week. The initiative needs signatures from 365,880 registered voters - five percent of the total votes cast for governor in the 2014 election - to qualify for the ballot."This is an unprecedented show of support on behalf of every corner of California to create three state governments that emphasize representation, responsiveness, reliability and regional identity," Draper said.   Splitting California into three states would require congressional approval. One proposed state would be called California or a name to be chosen by its residents after a split. It would consist of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties. A second state, Southern California or a name to be chosen by its residents, would consist of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera and Mono counties.   The remaining 40 counties would be part of the state of Northern California or a name chosen by its residents.   Draper said he conceived the initiative out of a belief that "the citizens of the whole state would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities and towns."   Steven Maviglio, a longtime Democratic Party political consultant who was a co-chair of the effort to oppose Draper's 2014 initiative to split California into six states, told City News Service, "Splitting California into three and creating three new governments does nothing to solve our state's challenges other than tripling them." "CAL 3'' has no connection to efforts to have California succeed from the United States. 2050

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The son of Lisa Marie Presley has died. He was 27.Presley's representative Roger Widynowski said in a statement Sunday to The Associated Press that she was "heartbroken" after learning about the death of her son Benjamin Keough. TMZ reports that Keough died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday in Calabasas, California.He is the grandson of the late Elvis Presley. Lisa shared Benjamin with her ex-husband Danny Keough.Keough is also survived by his sister, actress Riley Keough. 513
