(AP) — Mississippi residents rallied around terrified children left with no parents and migrants locked themselves in their homes for fear of being arrested Thursday, a day after the United States' largest immigration raid in a decade.Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said 680 people were arrested in Wednesday's raids, but more than 300 had been released by Thursday morning, ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said in an email.Cox said 30 of those who had been released were let go at the plants, while about 270 were released after being taken to a military hangar where they had been brought after the raids. He did not give a reason except to say that those released at the plants were let go due to "humanitarian factors.""They were placed into proceedings before the federal immigration courts and will have their day in court at a later date," he said. Officials had said Wednesday that they would release detainees who met certain conditions, such as pregnant women or those who hadn't faced immigration proceedings previously.A small group seeking information about immigrants caught up in the raids gathered Thursday morning outside one of the targeted companies: the Koch Foods Inc. plant in Morton, a small town of roughly 3,000 people about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of the capital of Jackson."The children are scared," said Ronaldo Tomas, who identified himself as a worker at another Koch Foods plant in town that wasn't raided. At one point, about 70 family, friends and residents waved goodbye and shouted, "Let them go! NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Opry Mills mall in Nashville announced plans to reopen Friday, one day after a shooting claimed the life of a 22-year-old man. The mall will reopen at 10 a.m. local time – fewer than 24 hours after a murder investigation began inside the building. There will be an enhanced Metro Nashville Police presence to ensure that shoppers and staff feel safe. The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. local time Thursday inside a hallway near the Auntie Anne's pretzel shop, just across from Old Navy. The victim, Demarco Churchwell, was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, where he later died. Police said the gunman is 22-year-old Justin Golson. He's been charged with homicide. As soon as shots were fired, shoppers scattered, terrified after hearing those gunshots.  "I thought I was going to die, I thought I was never going to see my husband or daughter again,” one woman said. Churchwell and the alleged shooter apparently knew each other. MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine was honored Thursday after disarming a gunman in the Chesterton neighborhood the week prior.Sgt. Jake McClung received the Navy Commendation Medal at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. According to the Navy and Marines Awards Manual, "It may be awarded to any service member who distinguishes themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement."San Diego Police got a call at 6:18 p.m. on June 4 of a man armed with a rifle, pointing it at families and hitting cars with the gun near Linda Vista Rd. and Wheatley St.McClung was driving through his neighborhood when he saw the man, identified as a Navy sailor in the police report, holding a rifle and threw a firecracker at his vehicle.Sgt. McClung said he parked in his driveway and watched the man walk into the street and point his rifle at cars. McClung said the man's wife and toddler came out to try and talk with him and were crying. McClung said the man pointed the rifle at his family and that's when McClung stepped between the gunman and the family to try and de-escalate the situation.He said the man was acting erratically and that gave the man's wife and child a chance to get inside. McClung said he teamed up with the neighborhood security guard and walked up to the man, trying to calm him.McClung said when he saw an opening he reached for the rifle and was able to disarm him, but he took a couple punches to the face, breaking his nose. McClung said he and the security guard wrestled the sailor to the ground and handcuffed him before police arrived."I don't know if he had PTSD of not, but if he was suicidal I also wanted to protect him, because he had a gun, he was in the middle of the street. The security guard later told me he was about to shoot him, so if that would have happened, it would have cost his life too. Even though he was obviously in the wrong, we have to take care of our own and sometimes taking care of our own means protecting them from themselves," McClung said.The man was arrested on several felony charges, including felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee community came together Friday to make sure an unclaimed veteran would not be forgotten. Large crowds turned out on a rainy morning to pay their respects to Leo Stokley, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He died Sunday at the Waters of Cheatham in Ashland City. He was 69 years old.Stokley served in the United States Marine Corps and did a tour of duty in Vietnam.After his passing, he had no family to attend his funeral. That’s when the community stepped in to make sure he wouldn't be buried alone. Hundreds of veterans and their friends and family showed up to show respect for Stokley.The push for help started among veterans groups on social media and was quickly shared during the week before the funeral."It's very heartwarming to see this many veterans and friends of veterans that show up here on a cold, rainy day, a weekday, to send him off in style. I'm proud for that. I'm proud for these guys that did that." said Bob Counter, an Air Force veteran.He was laid to rest at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville.  1100
