BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- China recorded 68.02 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade of electronics and information products in January, a growth of 19.3 percent year-on-year.     Sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Saturday that the growth rate was 12.9 percentage points lower than the year-earlier level.     The total trade volume included 38.29 billion U.S. dollars in export value, up 22.9 percent, and 29.73 billion dollars in import value, up 15.2 percent.     The sources said the growth rate for exports was 12.8 percentage points lower than the same month of last year, while that for imports was 13 percentage points lower.     Of the total exports, wholly owned foreign companies accounted for 24.94 billion U.S. dollars, or 65.1 percent, the sources added.

The Chinese government is working on specific regulations for collecting royalties from television, radio stations for using music works, a senior official said in Beijing over the week. However, it has not been decided when the regulations will be publicized, Liu Binjie, director of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the National Copyright Administration (NCA), was quoted as saying. The Chinese government's efforts in combating piracy and protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) have resulted in more shops and restaurants signing up to pay royalties on the ubiquitous background music that had long been used for free. Background music played at department stores or hotels -- also called "muzak"-- received legal protection in China in 2001 under revisions to the Copyright Law. The law states that both live and mechanical performances enjoy the same rights. Up to now, most big hotels, department stores and supermarkets in Beijing and Shanghai have paid fees to the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) for using the songs under their administration, according to sources. And Karaoke bars in China's main cities were made to pay 12 yuan (US.50) a day in royalties to music artists for each room, according to a regulation set by China's National Copyright Administration late last year. However, most television and radio stations in China are still using music works without paying any royalties. The Music Copyright Society of China is now negotiating with television and radio stations on copyright fee payments, China Press and Publishing Journal reported. The Music Copyright Society of China is the country's only officially recognized organization for music copyright administration. The association has now administered copyrights for over 14 million music works by 4,000 members.Public venues including hotels, restaurants and department stores are charged with different standards by the society. The usual fee is 2.54 yuan (US.9) per square meter per year for a department store of 10,000 to 20,000 square meters to use the music, the society said.

WUHAN: The China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) has released its latest list of the country's top 500 companies.State-owned China Petrochemical Corporation, also called Sinopec, was the largest company by revenue, with 1.06 trillion yuan (9.5 billion) in 2006. It was the only company to top 1 trillion yuan.Foreign trade dealer Zhucheng Waimao Co Ltd ranked 500. The Shandong province-based company recorded 7.216 billion yuan.Companies in the list witnessed a 23.7 percent increase in revenue and 25.9 percent hike in profits from the previous year, largely because of continued growth from mergers and acquisitions. However, the money-earning performance of the 500 still falls far behind that of the world's top 500 as compiled by Forbes.China's top performers recorded a modest 4.72 percent on profit margin, lower than the average 7.32 percent of the world's top 500, the CEC report said. The return on equity of the top 500 was 10.1 percent, much lower than the 16.1 percent of the world's top 500."The top 500 China is still mainly ranked in size instead of performance," Li Wei, deputy director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council said."That is a gap between China and developed countries."A total of 22 Chinese companies were among the world's top 500 in 2007. Sinopec, the largest company in China, ranked 17th."China's top firms have still focused their business on traditional industries, mainly manufacturing," Yang Du, professor at Renmin University of China, said.As many as 280 companies, accounting for 56 percent of the top 500 are from manufacturing industries, and less than 30 percent are from service-related industries.China's top 500 have been continually expanding, with 131 of them, merging and acquiring some 408 other businesses last year."But these merger and acquisition (M&A) activities are mainly limited within the same industries and few of the M&A deals are cross-industries," Yang said.Among the top 500, 96 are headquartered in Beijing and 40 are from East China's Jiangsu Province.
